View Full Version : engine preference
I4, I've only tried Vtwins and the triumph triple so there isnt much experience there,, but by far the I4 has the smoothest powerband and least vibrations

In general I4 for me please, but of course my preference could vary based upon what type of riding I was going to do.

Love V-twins, but I3's and V4's intrigue me... I would love to check one out...

I voted V2, but it's the only engine I've ever had experience with.

I love the smooth ride of a I4. Never owned any Vtwins though. The parallel twin was just silly.

Yeh I rocked a ninja 500 for a while, great bike, but it had a powerband that would spike a few times. Riding it, you could feel the engine surge around 5k then again around 9k

I can't just pick one.
I love the tractability and sound of a Vtwin, but I love the absolutely brutal power of a 1340cc I4.

Rode an SV650 for over 50K miles, so you would think I prefer v-twins, but no, I prefer more cylinders now. I don't like how twins feel like they're going to stall or break a connecting rod at low-rpm's, and I also don't like how they shake the entire frame at high rpm's, like my Aprilia did. So personally, it's I-4 all the way for me. I'd really like to try a V4 or the new crossplane R1, though.

From those configurations, v-twins, far and away.
Only thing more fun is an angry, violent 2-stroke!

Vtwin for me. I do like the inline Triple, they are fun. And I'd love to ride a V4 or a V5.
lotsa stuff missing here, ottmw you have I6, H2, H4, H6, radial, rotary, and we havent even touched firing orders, cooling, and crank layouts. that said, of the types ive rode I4 screamers have been the most addicting. looking to try a v4 in the future though
I also left out square 4. I went with common configs.

V4s are just too cool not to vote for though.

Been on I4's and V twins. I love me some V twin torque!

It is all mission specific to me. I prefer engines with character regardless of cylinder arrangement. Hairdryer type, electric, sewing machine like engines are boring...If my genie in a bottle were asking to fulfill my wish I would want a Big cc V4. Perhaps of Aprilia design...

I've had I4's in the past and parallel twins as well as my current V twin and the V twin is my favorite.

V-twin for me
Been a big triple fan for a while. Nice torque and midrange and it still has that top end kick.

Twin all the way.
I've had a several twins and 4 V4s. I still think the V4 is it.
Superhawk
Buell S1
BMW R1150 GS (ok, maybe that doesn't count)
Aprilia Caponord
2 VFRs
2 Vmaxs.
Maybe it's the bikes I've owned that sway me?

Or perhaps your preferences swayed your purchases? If it has 2 wheels and any engine it can be fun!

Or maybe you hate twins because they owe you a slpeen.
BTW, besides Trip, who is gay enough to like the boxers?
Who voted Boxer 894 times?

I love my P-Twin! It's a lot like a puppy  It just wants to play. It doesn't have to be ridden hard like a supersport I4, way up in the RPMs.And it doesn't punish you. Most V-Twins have that "rattle your teeth out" feel- no thanks. I wouldn't turn down a Tuono though. After this weekend, I want to ride a real sporting V4  (no a V-Max tank doesn't count)

Dino Triples? :lol

What about the HP2 Sport? It's thoroughly beemer, but I couldn't turn it down.

Yeah, it's not a power house, but it provides a nice ride for it's purpose.
I really like bored out stroked thumpers. Nothing like a single thats been pushed to the absolute limit

Exactly. And while boxers are nice, when you need to put sliders on the engine covers to keep from scraping the thing off, you really should re-consider your engine configuration. That thing is the 911 of bikes.

Not enough diversity in my riding history.
I've mainly ridden I4's and the V-Twins I've ridden have been Harley's and cruisers.
Can't claim a favorite until I ride more types.

Big bike shows are where it's at. I've ridden all the common configs. I4, V-twin, Single, P-Twin, V4. It's amazing how much difference there is when you change the design ideal and displacement a little in the same style engine. Small singles around 250 suck on the street, but get up to 650, and it's not bad. Then you go from the SV to the Buells to the Aprilias, and the V-Twins can have a big variety too. I can't wait to ride a VFR, because I definitely did not like the V4 in the Max. Still waiting to ride a modern triple and a turbine and a boxer and etc. etc. etc...
