Well the time has come to upgrade my phone. Jarv and I went to the verizon store last night to play with some phones and try to narrow it down. I've brought it down to 2 or 3 phones, but the verizon wireless website doesn't let you do a comparison across categories (like between a blackberry and a regular cell phone). And I tried to google a comparison but maybe they're just not in the same league as nobody seems to have it. Aaanyway....
1. Blackberry Tour
2. HTC Ozone
3. HTC Touch Pro 2 (not released yet. I'd have to wait. They say it will be here in "fall". But is already available for T-mobile.
Right now I have an enV, so it's pretty much just calls and texts. But I am feeling like I want to add data for the PDA thing. I don't think I'll use the internet too often, but I want to be able to have my e-mail fed to my phone to get it anywhere. And I'd use facebook and those things. I don't think there's any way to get facebook and e-mail without the internet. But if there is, that would be great!
I liked the feel of both the Tour and the Ozone. The Ozones camera is only a 2.0, the same as my enV, and no flash. The Tour has a 3.2 with a flash. I do use the camera. Not as my regular camera but to catch, spurt of the moment things. I text a LOT.
Thoughts? Thanks!! Going to work and since I don't have data on my env, lol, I won't see your responses until after 6 tonight.

I can "use" facebook on my phone without the internet...in the form of texts. I can update status by texting to FB and I get get messeges via text too. Can also upload photos...but I can't view anyone's profile. So you may want to do something like that if you dont get internet on your phone.

No experience with any of those. I love my bb flip
You may not like this anwser, but my suggestion is one word: WAIT
Verizon is going to be issuing a new round of blackberries toward the end of the year and early next year. These blackberries will be WIFI enabled and will have learned from the mistakes of the Tour and Storm. I wouldn't get a Tour based on the reviews of them at Crackberry, but the Storm 2 is getting raves in beta compared to the Storm. There are some other keyboard Blackberries that will be coming out as well that are getting some nice pre reviews.

If you're going to use your phone for emailing and internet, I definitely suggest the Blackberry. I have the Curve, and it's awesome. I love how fast the internet works, and I can update everything through my email. I don't even use text messaging because I have Blackberry Messanger (which is the same thing, but free for anyone who has a blackberry). OSP has the BB Storm, and it sucks. I don't know anything about the other phones, but just thought I'd share a little about the blackberry :)

Well waiting IS an option. But not ideal. That new line of blackberries is probably why theyre all so cheap right now. The Storm is down to $50.
Honestly, I'm not impressed with any of them. Usually by the time my time comes to get a new phone I've already decided which one I want and I just go get it. But knowing our upgrade was coming soon, I've been looking and nothing is standing out to me. I liked the idea of the storm when it first came out but I know so many people who are disappointing with it. Plus they're obviously getting the Storm 2 soon also.
My phone is just a little busted. It works fine. But the front screen doesn't work, and I just dropped it the other day which made the small piece of plastic under the battery pop out of place. This allows the battery to shift if I'm texting or something with my fingers on the back of the phone, and when that happens, the phone will just turn off. It's my 2nd one already too. I got it replaced in October when it was turning off for no reason. It does with this one also. I took it back again trying to get it replaced, but this time they wanted $50 and I knew my upgrade was coming up so I decided to deal with it.
My top choice would be an iphone for verizon also. But who knows when or if that will happen.
Thanks for all the advice. I think I'll just keep my env for now and see if anything happens. Our contract isn't actually up until January. But we can upgrade today.
Any other advice or suggestions is appreciated too though!

BlackBerry Storm sucks ginormous donkey cock. I've tried multiple versions of the OS and it still runs about 2/3 the speed in most applications and the web when compared with ONSSP's Curve or Bold or whatever the fuck she has. The big screen and touch ability was coolio at first, but texting sucks cause I fat-finger everything. Plus it's a pain in the ass to copy/paste, post on TWFix, and pretty much everything else I want to do with it. It half-ass freezes all the time and I constantly have to pull the battery. Everyone always goes, "Oooo sweet phone" when I pull it out, but that's about the only thing remotely ok about it.

Oh, and if you're going to use both hands to do something while talking on the phone, craddling it on your shoulder... forget about it... your face will mute the mic, attempt to conference in someone else, put the phone on speaker, or fucking hang up on them... Oh, or you'll drop it cause it weighs 8lbs.

i have had great luck with .151. The rest of the OSes have been donkey balls. It's bearable for me on .151. I am going to break it when Storm 2 comes out if they discontinue the storm, see if they will give me the Storm 2.
Have you tried .167 yet? It just came out. I have been reluctant because of the stability I have with .151.

I'm still on .142. I pretty much lost hope after upgrading, then downgrading, only to upgrade again because this one was so much better, this other one actually was more stable, but in reality they both sucked.

I definitely am not getting a storm. it just seemed cool at first when it was first coming out but after so many people having problems with it, it got crossed off my list months ago. I would see friends who have it and ask them what they think and they're answer would be "eh, it's fine." A phone like that shouldnt have that kind of reaction. It SHOULD blow you away. And if it doesn't, there's something wrong.

Have you tried 5.0.0.192? I heard the camera, BBM, and Facebook is fucked up on it, but that the rest of the phone is everything the Storm was advertised as and more. I don't know if I could live without the camera, but I hope this is a good sign of things to come.

I have had phones similar to all three of those. I had an HTC touch pro and couldn't wait to get rid of it. Windows mobile sucked awfully. I had an xv6900 which is similar to the ozone. If it doesn't have a keyboard don't consider it. iPhone people don't flip out--the reason the iPhone no-key keyboard works is because the keyboard is capacitive and most others are not. I have a storm and I have a tour for work. The tour is nice--would be better with wifi, but other than that I quite like it. Blackberry can build the Storm MCMLXVII and I wouldn't buy no matter what.
I would wait because if the Motorola android devices are delivered this year they may be worth the wait. The verizon device is code named Shules and can be seen a the Boy Genius report. Motorola is betting the farm on Android to save the handset division before they split the company in two. If it bombs they may not get another chance.

Im a Verizon guy because I think they have the best coverage and service but I hate the way they cripple phone features. An Android phone on Verizon sounds great but I wonder if it would still be as open as other Android phones.

Verizon has reversed this policy because of how much they lost by turning down the iphone because of this policy. They are slowly becoming the most open phones on the market. They aren't blackballing apps for stupid reasons and pretty much allowing anything on the market now. Their OS approval policy is still slow, but they are working on streamlining that too. I think an Android phone on Verizon would be just as open as any phone. The next gen blackberries are going to have wifi, that use to be unspeakable on Verizon.

yeah, you had to use the crappy Verizon OS for so long, it made you hate verizon. They are now pretty good about phone options now. I can get tetherberry to bypass their tethering option, I can do pretty much anything bypassing their verizon store options on the phone like ringtones and such. It's much nicer now. All that crap use to be pay.

What provider did you have the Touch Pro with? I've had an Alltel and verizon version. The verizon version sucks.
The gps is locked so they can get money off their Vnav, the cpu is slower, and has less ram.

Yeah I have a friend with the touch pro, but he has metro. He's happy with it. But I know they always run differently depending on the provider. I've watched some video reviews of the storm 2 and all the reviewers are saying it's 1000x better than the storm and is a great phone. They showed that even on an old OS that it comes with in the box, it runs faster than the storm with the newest version.
So I might give that a try. Ideally I want the iphone, but I'm not willing to switch providers for it. So if I hear any word that verizon will be getting it while I'm waiting, I'll hold out until then.

I had the Verizon version which is different than the Sprint one. The Verizon one has less CPU and memory (as you mentioned). I was able to get a cooked ROM to use the GPS, but I restored it and sold it on eBay for good money.
If you want to stay with Verizon, wait a bit, because I think the Android phones may be announced tomorrow and available before Thanksgiving.

Wellll, Jarv and I got new phones a few weeks ago. He waited for the HTC Touch Pro 2 to get in stock (he waited about a week or so, it was back in stock for a whole day, which was when he ordered it, and has been out of stock since), and I got the HTC Imagio. I was really happy with it until one day the phone was telling me I had 1 new text message, which I couldn't find. I went through every folder, every text thread and found nothing that hadn't been read yet. The only thing suspicious that I had found was what appeared to be a thread with myself. It had a text in it that I sent to Jarv, and he received it, but for some reason it was put in a thread with myself, and did not show up in his thread.
I tried turning the phone off and back on, I tried taking out the battery, I deleted every message and conversation, clearing everything out, and that damn "1" just wouldn't go away.
I went to verizon and the tech guy did all the same things I did, and finally came out of his back room and said he couldn't figure it out and all he could offer me was to replace the phone, if I still wanted it, explaining I may have gotten a defective one. He offered to transfer all my contacts and set up my e-mail again and put everything back the way it was, so I took the offer. He did however, say something about that he hates Windows Mobile, and I've heard that people either love it or hate it, they swear by Windows or by Blackberry. He then stopped himself saying he didn't hate it, that it was good, but this sort of thing tended to happen on their phones.
Anyway, he replaced my phone and everything has been fine. Then, the same thing happened with Jarv's Touch Pro 2. He went to verizon, just yesterday and since the phone is sold out, they couldn't replace his, so he had to back his phone up, and then reset it. When I was trying to play with his phone, I noticed the same thing, a message that was sent to me, and I received, but was filed in a thread with himself.
Now today, it has happened to me again. I again, found the same thread with myself holding a message that belongs somewhere else. And now that it has happened twice, I'm frustrated.
My 30 day trade-in period ends next week, on the 13th, so i need to make a decision soon. So I need opinions.
I'm considering just going to blackberry because of what the tech guy said. I'm worried to go to another windows phone and have it do the same shit. I'm liking the touch screen thing, and have heard the storm 2 is a huge improvement on the original. So that is an option.
Then of course, you have all been talking about the Android, which is coming out on Friday, the 6th.
Jarv has told me when he went to verizon, they didn't say it was windows mobile causing the problem that windows was the reason they couldn't figure out what was wrong.
Argh, I'm going crazy here. Help please!
Go droid
The storm2 isn't bad now that they got 5.0 OSes on them.
HTC makes some great phones, I've had mine for almost 2 years and its finally starting to wear out from harder than normal use. I too had a problem with some of my texts dissapearing, brought it to a store tech and the guy hooked it to a computer and changed some settings and it never happened again.
Android really is the wave of the future, a few years and it will dwarf all other phone OSs (except ipod which will be a relevant force for years)

It used to be Bell Atlantic I think then they became Verizon and started buying up lots of smaller telco's.
Personally I love Apple products but AT&T is garbage and even the iPhone isnt worth a switch to an inferior network. Also, I have an iPod Touch which I use all the time and makes up for the lack of iTunes integration on the Droid.
In fact, I have a friend with an iPhone who recently dropped it in the water while fishing, he eventually got a replacement but for a few weeks he was completley without his address book, notes, and music player, not to mention phone. That reminded me that I dont mind carrying two divices if it means all of my eggs arent in one basket.

That was my deal breaker for getting an I-Phone. I did not want to deal with ATT and at the time they did not offer an insurance plan... yea fuck buying a $600 phone (at the time) and being unable to insure it against breakage, loss, etc. I worked with a guy that literally cracked his screen within the first week of owning an I-Phone!!!:panic: Besides, when they first came out, I had Helio and my phone won the "Pepsi challenge" every time as far as browsing speed was concerned. The I-Phone has a certain "cool factor" but there are several phones that kick it's ass when it comes to performance and features-camera, video capture, etc. Shit can you even replace the battery yet in an I-Phone?:idk:
