Solar panels are really not the answer because they only provide power in sunlight or they need DC storage batteries to harness energy for nighttime use. The use of hair to replace the silicon is OK, but solar panel cost is not the big downside to its use.
We need to use nuclear power.

Spoken like someone with central air.
For many, a panel such as this...even without storage batteries, could run a pump to fill a water tower, and provide water for a remote town.
You're thinking what's more efficient on a grand scale. Some people can't think past a clean drink of water. Re-calibrate.
Maybe this invention can help people...and ya gotta at least give the motherfucker MacGyver props out the ass.

I hope it actually works, and generates the claimed power. Running a pump that could fill a water tower is more than a little beyond this cell's capabilities, but a small bank of them could provide very basic electricity for a small village.

Yes being an engineer I don't want to take away from his discovery. It's actually rather cool and could work in rual areas instead of burning fossil fuels. On a larger scale and in densly populated areas, it is not very feasible.

hey, I like my central air. :nee:
Seriously though, that is very cool and useful technology, particularly for the place it's being tested.
I wish implementation would catch up with innovation just a little bit.

I have central air... I open the door to the cellar and use a fan to blow the cool air into my house. :D
i see a crudely cobbled together piece of crap
9v output for $40 :lmao: maybe the author should have looked up the current going rate for silicon cells at that output, you could have four of them for that price. of course why would i assume he could operate something so simple as google when he misspells edison
btw i repaired a 30 amp blade fuse in my van yesterday with a chewing gum wrapper. wheres my macgyver props?

How many amps or watts are you getting for $10?

that was going to be my question... voltage may seem well (hell, a car battery is only 12) but wattage and amperage is pretty important...

I have doubts as well. Whenever I hear about any new breakthrough energy technology I am skeptical. My mind always goes back to the whole cold fusion debacle back in the late 80s.

wait, you don't have a cold fusion generator in your basement?
shit, you're falling behind dude!

I have one but haven't hooked it up yet. It is next to the 100mpg carburetor and hydrogen injector I bought for my car.:lol

not much but its more than you get with hair :lmao:

If the claims prove to be true that probably isn't the case. They are saying the "hair" solar cell generates 18 watts, which at 9 volts means 2 amps. I doubt any of the $10 12 volt cells are making 1 amp, much less two. That is why this is so remarkable, if true. Of course that is also why I am skeptical.

see this is why i always wear a hat when i go outside. i dont wanna electrocute my brains. :tremble:
