Med student uses sword to kill intruderTuesday, September 15, 2009 |

6:24 AM BALTIMORE, MD -- Baltimore police say a Johns Hopkins University medical student armed with a samurai sword killed an intruder in his garage.
Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says campus police and an off-duty city officer responding to a call for a suspicious person heard screams to call police around 1:20 a.m. Tuesday.
Guglielmi says the student told the man he found in his garage to leave and the man accosted him. That's when Guglielmi says the student defended himself, cutting off the man's hand and causing a severe laceration to his upper body.
He says the man died at the scene, but police are not yet releasing his name.

Not as clumsy or as random as a blaster. An elegant weapon for a more civilized age...

That's awesome, he must've been someone with some knowledge of swords and maybe even a little training.

I'm not sure if you could pull off moves like that with the $40 Tobacco store swords most people have. I'd like to know what kind of sword was used.

Sounds like the medical student needed a new cadaver.

That is a great end to a Burglary. But I am old and lack the training. You bring the sword I will bring a Model 20 S&W V Comp Either way the appropriate end to a Burglary is a DEAD burglar

Reminds me of the old local story of a couple transvestites that got into a fight and the one broke into the others house with a sword and killed him/her.

As far as I'm concerned... death is an occupational hazard of being a criminal.

He either really, really knew what he was doing with that sword, or he cut the hand off after the intruder had already been taken down and out. "Samurai" swords are designed for penetrating and slicing flesh, not breaking or sawing through bone...

Good on him either way.

Good catch.

Seems they think all the damage was done in one motion and his hand was nearly severed.

Some info on the dead guy from the Baltimore Sun article:
Rice, of the 600 block of East 27th St. in Baltimore, had 29 prior convictions for crimes such as breaking and entering, Guglielmi said. He had been released Saturday from the Baltimore County Detention Center, where he had been held after his arrest by county police last year for stealing a car in the city. He was found guilty in December of unauthorized removal of property and was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Twenty-nine prior convictions and only released from jail that Saturday. Get this kid a medal. :)

Wow - good for him! Home defender 1, Habitual criminal 0 & game over. :rockwoot:

Regarding training & quality of weapon, I gotta think that if an unarmed scumbag were coming at me, I'm pretty sure I would have a good chance of taking care of business with a $10 machete & zero training.

Apparently the thief didn't. I'd love to know what he was thinking when a figure stepped through the door carrying a sword. Had to seem pretty surreal, right up until the pain hit (which had to be beyond excruciating).

A two-handed death grip and a swing-away attitude can do wonders. Me might have had no knowledge of how to use it at all, apart from having seen Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 12 times.
