Just wondering if any of you have completely erased chicken strips using a 190/55/17 on the street????

not a 190/55, but the 190/50 was completely strip free two days after getting them installed. The first day the bike spent in the back of the truck, and on the second day we were at the Gap.

I don't have a problem with getting a 190/50/17 there, but I don't have any experience with the 190/55/17 yet, but I asked because my friend's 09 R1 has them and that tire has not seen the edge yet, with him riding it, me and another buddy who all get there on the 190/50/17.
Obviously it depends greatly on what size wheel it's mounted...

Also depends how you ride......If you are clueless and ride your sportbike like a dirt bike (not hanging off..... Pushing the bike down while your upper body is still pointing straight up), then yeah you'll erase the chicken strips quickly. But you won't be very fast.

Thats exactly what my sarcastic response was trying to say....Anyone that looks to the strips is not really a rider...

Damn, smiley you are one of the guys I would love to ride with on this board, the intent behind the thread is just what the title says, it's not about impressing someone by not having strips but more or less the difference between the ease of getting there with the 190/55 vs 190/50 tire profiles. You have been around long enough to know the curves will separate the men/women from the boys/girls...

Somewhere in this porn corrupted ECU of mine I have a picture of Doohan, Schwantz, Rainey, and I think Saarinen going thru a corner at a GP. The styles are all so different and the bikes lean angles are dramatically different and yet their corner speed would only have varied slightly...Doohan and Saarinen leaing their bikes over much further on the tire...

LOL! I think I am too drunk to drive home! 'shhh, I am at work!' And I have to mow when I get off.
BTW along these lines I rode a wkend back with a young man and his Suzy 750. He pulled off twice complaining he had felt his rear skipping and slipping. Turns out too much pressure in the rear but I complimented him on feeling the limit before he rode over it. I told him to leave the tired as is and feel out the limits so he can recognize them when he lowers the pressures for aother ride. Kids got potential...

Yeah, which means they're probably at the limits of their tires, while the other guys still have more they could use.
I don't use all of my 190/55 at the track. I'm not sure what most rim widths are but mine came stock with a 180, so I'd guess my stock rim was a bit smaller than bikes that come stock with 190s.

All the tracks I raced were tight point and shoot course that a 170/60 did fine. Thought I had hit the big time on a 180 sized slick. The longer tracks we ran only got a slightly better tread footprint on maybe 3 of their 10 or 11 corners so not a huge advantage there.
in the end the greater footprint at lean and traction ability of that footprint was largeley determined by setup and that by a fine fine line...

Yeah all of my 190/50 and 190/55s have gotton to the edges on the street, but we only run selective roads. I put a new set of BT003 on a few months back and one of the sides is wearing out already. Fuck....
My front tire has about a 1/32 of untouched tread left on each side. Just means I have a little lower to go. LOL
I would say the type of tire makes more of a difference than anything else.

A 190 should not be used on a 5.5" rim. It stretches the tire to a point that could affect handling.

I actually got my chicken strips all of the way off of my 190/55 on friday, the same ride where I drug my knee for the first time.
I am confused though. Why would you want a 190/55 for sport touring? They are 15 bucks more expensive than a 190/50 and wouldn't make the bike any better at all for the type of riding it would be.

A lot of people are trying Sport touring tires to get better mileage Some people even claim that they don't notice a grip difference between st tires and ss tires.:idk: As long as I am still traveling at the speeds that I currently do, I'll stick with super sport tires. I personally appreciate the confidence that they inspire.

Since that's the tire the bike was built with, I'd prefer a sport touring tire of the same size. Since I can't get that, I'm running Pilot Power 2CTs right now. I'll probably get some Pilot Road 2's next, and just go with a 190/50.

I run ST tires on the highway, BT021s, Pirellis Stradas...They grip fine especially the multicompound ones. Get crazy mileage to boot. BUT there is something to be said about the extra safety margin you get from a true SS tire...

Besides, I keep getting sets for around $200 shipped. Most st tires are around $300...unless you're getting a lot more than 50% better mileage, I don't see the point.

You don't get to be a front runner in GP by leaving anything on the table. The fact that riders can be champions with unorthodox styles disproves the ideology of a single " proper" riding style. Every style has its pros and cons, and what works best varies from situation to situation.

This is only the case with street tires. 180's are extinct in the racing world.

That was a 190/50, I run a 190/55, any idea how the height compares? I do wonder about the profile but I haven't noticed any noticeable change in handling. I'm still not using all the tread, but considering a friend highsided because he ran out of tire and broke his collarbone this past weekend, I'm fine with that.

a 190/55 would theoretically raise the rear end about 9.5mm compared to a 190/50

I switched from Pilot Power 2CTs to Pilot Road 2s, and have no intention of ever going back on the street. I get just as much traction from the Roads, they heat up quickly, and tread life is amazing. Simply the best street tire I have ever run.

Hey, whatever makes you comfortable! Hell, I listened to guys rant and rave about the newest Shinko tires.:idk:
FWIW I just picked a buddy up off the road Sat, that was running those tires and the guy ahead of him complained of slipping as well. Crasher was riding a 1098, other Michelin guy was on a GSXR750.:idk:
I understand that there are a lot of factors at work here but I doubt that a set of Pilot Power Road 2CTs have the same grip level as my Bridgestone BT-002 Race Street tires. Now in a perfect world, I would own two sets of rims and put ST tires on one set and SS tires on the other.:rockwoot:

I dislike the tippyness of the PP's when I first put them on the Buell. Aggressive geometry and PP's profile not the best for street riding. After about a thousand miles of slab riding they were more manageable.
I really liked the overall feel of the Corsa III's, but didn't like the lack of wear.
