What kind of woman gives birth to 19 pound baby? A tough one.
A woman in Indonesia has birthed a 19 pound baby boy (19.2 pounds, to be exact), the largest and heaviest newborn baby ever recorded in that country, a doctor said on Wednesday.
The as-yet-unnamed baby (how about “Bubba”?), who is 24.4 inches long, was born by caesarean section on Monday at a public hospital.
“This heavy baby made the surgery really tough, especially the process of taking him out of his mum’s womb. His legs were so big,” Binsar Sitanggang said.
The baby boy is in a healthy, despite initially having to be given oxygen to help alleviate some breathing difficulties, the gynecologist said.
“He’s got strong appetite, every minute, it’s almost non-stop feeding,” he said.
“This baby boy is extraordinary, the way he’s crying is not like a usual baby. It’s really loud.”
The boy’s immense size was probably due to the fact that his mom, Ani, 41, has diabetes.
When a mom with diabetes sees her glucose level rise during pregnancy, the baby may get too much glucose and grow too big, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
