Socialized medicine (treating patients) and socialized medical research are two different things. Medical research is mostly funded by government already in the USA (I used to work in a lab and most money came from the NIH).

Too bad nobody is proposing socialized medicine in the US.
Socialized medicine is what they have in the UK.

The concern here in the US is insurance and what type of model would best suit the people.

Unregulate the piss out of it where the only government envolvement is enforcing the contracts the two or more private parties agree to.

Not exactly there skippy...

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/canadian-researchers-make-breast-cancer-breakthrough/article1315753/

"A major portion of the money used to fund the research came from the B.C. Cancer Foundation's Weekend to End Breast Cancer walk, as well as donations raised across the province during the annual breast-cancer walk over the past six years. Funding also came from other groups, including the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation."

Researchers found it based on monies from donations. Socialized medicine didn't give squat. Alot of the drugs we have here in the U.S. are researched by our drug companies, paid for by private insurance; ultimately by us.

Nice try. lol

Fact: a country with socialized medicine decoded the DNA sequence of breast cancer.

Fact: you all use Canada's medical system as an example of what is wrong with socialized health care.

Fact: donations are a form of socialism.
Fact: insurance company run medical system didn't do it.

Fact: you all would rather drive yourself off a cliff in a burning car than acknowledge the benefits of a socialized health system.

Fact: this is ultimately a good thing. Regardless of who discovered it.

Technically speaking we don't have a socialized medical system, we have a single payer medical system. The difference escapes most, but it means that we actually have privately run hospitals.

My taxes pay for my health care. Sounds like socialized medicine to me...

I know you'll likely be able to break it down even further. Likely into a different category of socialism. But, socialism as a title works for me.

Donations are voluntary, not socialism.

Saying that socialized medicine has resulted in this breakthrough may be inaccurate, but it still stands that this is the sort of thing that the detractors to universal health care say would never happen under such a system. It's just another in a long line of medical discoveries for Canadians.

*EDIT* It took me about ten seconds to find that the B.C. Cancer Agency is an agency of the British Columbia Health Services Agency, making it part of the government health care network.

Any person can find a way to do something great under any government system. I wouldn't be one to say Canadians couldn't do something like this under their system.

All I said was donations weren't socialism.

There is a huge difference

There is a huge difference

As much as the difference between being a liberal and being a socialist, which is a distinction that also escapes far too many people.

No, they aren't. They're charity. That can exist under any nominally free system. The discovery was still made by a government agency though, using government resources in addition to those donations.
