If you have, as you reflect back on the situation, what caused your highside?

a friend did a few years ago, it was a tight, blind, uphill hairpin and he tucked too close to the inside of the road. lost the front in the detritus went over the bars and landed headfirst in a weeded hill on the other side. luckily he was more or less ok and the bike was still rideable and we did the hour and a half trip back without incident

On a mini bike I did, my wheel hit a crack and took me for a ride

Oh, we're telling what happened. I low sided in a tight left at maybe 50mph (ground speed literally). as soon as we reached the side of the road, while I was still on it, on the ground, it caught. When I became aware of myself, I was on my knees, with my head caught in a 4"x4" wire field fence. My head had penetrated the wire and I probably would have been driven though it except for a concrete fence post that took the side of my helmet down a few layers of fiberglass and destroyed what had been my collar bone from my neck to my shoulder. I disinterred myself from the fence and looked around. My point of entry through the fence was almost exactly 90 degrees from where I went off.

My bike was 50 or 60 feet down the road, laying on the opposite side of the one I low sided on.
I of course went to see if my new bike was hurt and discovered that my arm was no longer firmly attached to the rest of me when I tried to pick it up. I started walking back to town, then got a lift home, then to the hospital, which is another story for another time. 6 or 8 weeks later I'm as good as I'm going to get and only a little less stupid than I was before...

Yep, painkillers, cold temps, cold tires, and a man hole cover.

I kinda had one on the track, but not street.

Does it count as a high side if your bike managed to correct itself and ride away without you?

Mine was caused by a big puddle that had formed on the track that I hadn't seen in the previous laps while it was raining. Lost the rear in the puddle at full lean/knee almost on the ground, it caught as soon as I came out of the puddle and threw me off like a high side, but it corrected itself and rode down the straight into the mud and slowed to almost a stop and fell over. No damage whatsoever. I, however, flew through the air about 10 feet and landed on my face (full face helmet, got to watch the asphalt go by) and slid awhile.

if you were tigger you would have rode though the deer and stayed on!

I witnessed one this summer.

Ill tell you all about it if interested, when I get home from work.

Mine was a combination of inexperience and shitty luck.

We were ridding in a series of hills and valleys. Crested a hill, and a few buddies were stopped in front of me in the valley. I never saw them until it was too late. Slammed on the breaks, locked up the rear, did my first and only stoppie, hit two riders, high sided.

I remember watching my bike rotate underneeth me as I flew through the air. Time went very slowly.

Tried to stand up before I was done slidding. That wasn't fun. When I was able to stand up, I ran over and picked up the bike.

60 seconds later, a car came flying down the road, cresting the blind hill. If me and my bike would have still been sliding 60 seconds earlier, we would have both been run over.

Came over the crest of a hill and saw a dump truck taking up both lanes of traffic while backing into a driveway. Rear wheel locked up, caught and flipped me off the bike. I landed behind the dump truck where it continued backing up... right over my left leg.

Once from locking the front brake up and trying to turn/swerve at the same time. Inexperience...totally my fault.

It was my first bike and I had only owned it 4 days and was following too close and the traffic in front of me came to a sudden stop. I was not wearing proper gear either and got road rash all the way up on both arms.

Nothing like tearing up your shiny new bike with 30-day TEMP TAGS !! :lol :screwy: :db:

This was also before they had MSF courses.

I am now a believer in the MSF course for new riders and AGATT

I highsided on a gap run years ago as a result of hamfisted throttle input.

a buddy of ours just highsided at the track this past weekend. He went about 15 feet in the air at ~90mph and landed on his feet. His legs are FUCKED. full of metal now and he won't be able to put ANY weight on them for 3months. Sucks.

most of these arent what i'd call a "highside", i havent done it myself but have saw it happen a couple of times on the street

What would you say were the cause of them?

Sounds like you can only highside at the track when applying too much throttle when exiting a corner..

I've seen some big highsides on the track. I've never seen one on the street. I know a couple of friends who've highsided at the Gap but I wasn't there to witness. I myself have never highsided.

My situation that I described in my post probably wasn't really a highside by definition. I started not to post about it but it's the closest I've come...I flew up and over the front/side of the bike but again...it probably wasn't really a highside.

I hope I don't get the chance to do a textbook one and post about it.

Now that I think about it I also flew up and over the front of my bike when I slammed into that car that pulled in front of me and that wasn't really a highside either.

Yea hitting shit and flying through the air can be done on a skateboard. A high side is exactly what Kelli described. The rear wheel loses traction, suddenly regains it (usually from chopping the throttle), the shock loads up and BOING off you go!!! Hitting something and flying off would be a catapult situation imho.

Right and I didn't post that it was...actually I said it wasn't.

The first incident that I posted about earlier...I didn't hit anything....locked the brakes up...slid...hit the gas...slightly turned...and went sailing. That what I posted as a potential highside and even that I guess wasn't really a highside. :lol

My 9R was sliding sideways before it regained traction in the rear and FLIP... there I go!

I forgot about this.

This summer I had two idiots come blowing by me to get on the onramp. It pissed me off pretty good, so I decided to play get real close to their rear tire. It took all of about 2 seconds to catch up and realize they had absolutely no idea what they were doing.

Not only were they wearing shorts, tshirts and sneakers. They were sticking their ass out instead of their knee. I didn't want to be responsible for them riding over their head, so I backed right off. Settled in and let them go cutting through traffic.

I crest a hill a few kms down the highway, and I can see them setting up to take the offramp to a really nice twisty stretch of road that I'm heading to as well. I see the first guy go in with the second guy following close behind. It's a fairly tight offramp, but can easily be done in excess of 100kmh if you have the slightest bit of skill.

Then I see rear guys tail lights. Then I see his wheel slide and gain traction and pitch him off. The bike goes rolling into the grass and he goes flying through the air. By the time I get to him, he gets up. Puts his sneakers back on  and pitches the bike over onto it's other side.

At this point I tell him, "Man, you're not riding that thing anywhere...". The clip ons were fubared. And most of the fairing were off.

He was in a hurry to leave and was on a cell phone for somebody to come pick it up when I decided I didn't feel like getting splattered by somebody not paying attention in a car. Wished him luck and went on my way.

I highsided my fiddy last night. Pretty bad.

I flew through the air and the landed on the brake lever just above the knee and it ripped into my leathers and made impact just behind the knee. I got a couple of slices back there, but luckily it didn't impale me. The lever ended up breaking off into the leathers and people were wondering what I was doing until I pull the lever from out of my leathers.
