'Modern Warfare 2' Hits Consoles Tuesday

NEW YORK -- This holiday season's biggest entertainment blockbuster likely will be a sequel to a popular franchise, with jarring depictions of war and an intricate story of good versus evil. It could easily rake in more than last year's record $155 million opening weekend for "The Dark Knight."

But this blockbuster is not a movie.

It is "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2," a video game that Activision Blizzard Inc. is releasing Tuesday. Fans worldwide are expected to spend at least half $500 million on the game in the first week.

That would at least match last year's "Grand Theft Auto IV," which was the most successful video game release in history and might have been the top entertainment launch ever.

Justin Criswell, 31, planned to line up at a GameStop store in Brooklyn on Monday night so he could buy the new "Call of Duty" when it went on sale after midnight for $60. It's available for PCs, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3.

"Ever since they announced it, me and most of the friends that I play with have been crazy excited about it," Criswell said. Once he gets a copy, he plans to stay up much of the night to play it online with friends and relatives scattered in Tennessee, California, Ohio and Florida.

"Those who have to work the next day have taken the day off," he said.

Like the previous five "Call of Duty" games, which are all rated "M'' for mature (not for kids under 17), this one lets players shoot their way through a complex series of scenes. The game's developer, Infinity Ward, spent two years creating realistic graphics that are amplified in many players' homes by big-screen, high-definition TVs sets and powerful speakers. It's like stepping into a movie.

A big part of the game's appeal is in its multiplayer component -- players can fight each other, whether they're at the same game console or in separate locations and connected online.

Or a player can dive in alone and get swept into the game's plot, which picks up where "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare," left off. That game ended with victory over a Russian terrorist, but he was just part of a larger conspiracy. This time, the target is an even more vicious leader of the Russian Ultranationalist movement. Settings include a snowbound Siberian base, a leafy American suburb and the burning streets of Washington, D.C. One trailer for the game shows a glimpse of action in outer space.

While video games are increasingly marketed to men and women of all ages as mainstream entertainment, the core demographic for "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" is mainly guys.

For David Dague, 36, who lives in Chicago, the launch of "Modern Warfare 2" is like the beginning of football season for a sports fan. Because he can play the game with other people, joining up in "clans" or fighting against them, "Call of Duty" is like "paintball in a box," he said. Better yet, paintball on a couch.

"Playing against other living, thinking players becomes a competitive pastime," said Dague, who runs a Web community for adults who play multiplayer games on the Xbox 360. Dague said he plans to play "Modern Warfare 2" for about two hours at a time, two to three nights a week.

"I don't watch soap operas, I don't watch football. Multiplayer gaming is where my competitive spirit gets its outlet," he said.

Activision is working with retailers to plan more than 10,000 midnight openings in the United States, including most of the 4,300 GameStop Corp. stores around the country. It won't give numbers, but GameStop says pre-orders for "Modern Warfare 2" hit an all-time high.

In all, about 28 million "Call of Duty" games have been sold in the United States, with each installment doing better at launch than the previous one, said NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier. Optimism about the latest title led Activision on Thursday to reaffirm its outlook for 2009. It expects more than $2 billion in revenue for the current quarter -- roughly half of the year's total.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter estimates Activision is spending as much as $50 million to market the game, including TV spots, billboards and ads on social-networking sites. Activision won't say how much the game cost to make, but most blockbusters require tens of millions of dollars.

For Criswell and Dague's generation, video games are entertainment on par with movies, except they last many more hours and immerse players in stories in which their actions affect the outcome.

Patrick Kienbauer, an 18-year-old student in Austria, said the game's last installment, which has sad background music and a "comfortless ambiance," let him "feel the cruelty and violence of war." He's already ordered a copy of "Modern Warfare 2" so he can get it as quickly as possible.

I'm starting to think I am a horrible team player. I will normally have 15-20 kills and 5-10 deaths and my teammates have under 12 kills and over 12 deaths. This happens more often than not for me.

Here are some simple strategies to follow in the multiplayer mode of Modern Warfare 2.
Have a Camp Out
Modern Warfare 2 does not reward players that rush out into the open. In fact, your main objective during your first few levels will be to seek out these people, and kill them.
Finding a hiding spot in Modern Warfare 2 is a relative proposition. If you can find a spot which has a good view of the enemy, but where the enemy will be more likely to concentrate on looking a different direction, stay in that spot until it's obvious to the other players that you're mowing them down.

Good examples of these hiding spots:
1. Perpendicular to a building's window. Typically, the enemy players will be making their way through the building, especially on the ground floor.
2. The most common hiding spots in Modern Warfare 2 are second floor walkways or windows. Honestly, most of these spots suck, but even a bad spot has a couple of advantages. First, you're likely to get out of combat if you need a break to recover from being shot. Second, if you can find a window or ledge that has a good view of either an alley or a "town square" that the enemy has to pass through, that'll make a decent spot until someone decides to take you out.
Don't Rush To Deploy

If you're doing well, you'll get "Kill Streaks" - rewards for killing X people in a row, which you can deploy by pressing over on the D pad (different on PC).

Here's a list of the Kill Streak rewards you can use. Many of these remain locked until you reach a certain level:
3 Kills - UAV: Sends a UAV to scan the area and locate enemies on the minimap.
4 Kills - Care Package: Call in a package drop by throwing smoke to wherever you want the package to drop. It contains either a random killstreak or ammo and can be used by the other team.
4 Kills - Counter UAV: Blocks enemy UAV
5 Kills - Sentry Gun: Airdrop a sentry gun that fires at enemies.
5 Kills - Predator Missile: Calls in a remote control missile via a laptop which you can guide to kill enemies. You are defenseless while using the missile.
6 Kills - Precision Airstrike: Calls in an airstrike which you can control the direction where it comes from.
7 Kills - Attack Helicopter: Call in an attack helicopter that hovers around and kills enemies.
7 Kills - Harrier Strike: Hovering plane which can attack enemies.
8 Kills - Emergency Airdrop: Call in a supply drop.
9 Kills - Pave Low: Calls in a heavily armored helicopter to kill enemies.
9 Kills - Stealth Bomber: Massive amounts of bombs dropped on your enemies.
11 Kills - Chopper Gunner: Lay waste to enemies as a chopper gunner.
11 Kills - AC-130: You get to be the gunner of an AC-130 gunship via laptop and rain hell upon your enemies. You are defenseless while using the AC-130.
15 Kills - EMP. Enemies can't use any electronic perk. Basically kills all other perks.
25 Kills - Nuke. No, not the Robocop drug... A tactical NUKE. Obliterates enemies.

Your kill streak unlocks stay with you when you die. If your team has already deployed a UAV, keep your UAV Kill Streak reward until it's needed. Don't use a Patriot Missle (or AC130) when you're exposed - get to the back of the map and crouch or lay down. When you're sure you can deploy safely, do so.
Another aspect of not rushing to "deploy" is this: don't run out into the open after you've been killed. Many times, you'll respawn close to where you died; get to shelter of some sort. If you die multiple times in a row, you'll get a Death Streak:
3 Deaths - Copy Cat: Steal the class / weapons of the person that killed you. If you're new to the game, and you're getting killed by more experienced players with better weapons, this is an advantage. As you rank up, this advantage fades.

4 Deaths - Painkiller: Triple health for 10 seconds after spawn. The intent here is to get you the hell outta Dodge if you're getting spawn killed over and over. It's still pretty useless against missles / c130s, and it's also no use if you spawn in a relatively fair location.

Basically, in Modern Warfare 2, avoiding death is probably more important than killing. These "perks" aren't all that great, as a practical matter.

Later, you'll unlock Martyrdom (drop a grenade at your corpse after 4 deaths). This has potential, as does "Final Stand", which is like Last Stand in Modern Warfare, except you can use your primary weapon, and you can actually recover from death!

Collect the rewards

The "Care Package" that gets dropped when you or your teammates get a kill streak can contain UAV blockers and turrets (among other things). Turrets are especially useful at low levels, where you can easily rack up an additional 500+ points of experience by "doing nothing".
Unlock the right stuff
As you level up, you'll unlock several items. When you unlock more than one DECENT attachment to your weapon, be sure to use the Bling perk to allow both attachments simultaneously. Yes, this uses one of your perk slots (the first one), but it can really be advantageous.

At your earliest opportunity (around level 10-11), consider unlocking the Sentry Gun; it's the same sentry gun that's available in the Care Package, and again, the reward can be great, XP-wise.

Stick to the Good Grenades
You'll be able to use the Semtex grenades pretty early in your advancement. I recommend the Semtex grenades (sticky) if you're the type of player that can predict movement. Since the grenades stick, you can position them far more accurately. Plop one onto the corner of a building if you're being chased, or stick one on a window sill to get rid of a sniper. Even if you "miss" with these grenades, you can typically buy yourself more time with them, because you can "clog up" a window or other common snipe location. A regular grenade will likely roll behind a sniper in Modern Warfare 2, but a sticky will force the sniper to fall back away from his spot so that you can advance.

Search and Destroy - Two teams take turns in defending and destroying an objective. Offense will carry a bomb that needs to be planted on either one of the two plant-sights defended by the other teams. On half time teams switch, defense will be offense.
Capture the Flag - Capture the enemies flag and return it to your teams base to score points.
Demolition - Defend and destroy both objectives.

Finding a hiding spot in Modern Warfare 2 is a relative proposition. If you can find a spot which has a good view of the enemy, but where the enemy will be more likely to concentrate on looking a different direction, stay in that spot until it's obvious to the other players that you're mowing them down.

Good examples of these hiding spots:
1. Perpendicular to a building's window. Typically, the enemy players will be making their way through the building, especially on the ground floor.
2. The most common hiding spots in Modern Warfare 2 are second floor walkways or windows. Honestly, most of these spots suck, but even a bad spot has a couple of advantages. First, you're likely to get out of combat if you need a break to recover from being shot. Second, if you can find a window or ledge that has a good view of either an alley or a "town square" that the enemy has to pass through, that'll make a decent spot until someone decides to take you out.
Don't Rush To Deploy

If you're doing well, you'll get "Kill Streaks" - rewards for killing X people in a row, which you can deploy by pressing over on the D pad (different on PC).

Here's a list of the Kill Streak rewards you can use. Many of these remain locked until you reach a certain level:
3 Kills - UAV: Sends a UAV to scan the area and locate enemies on the minimap.
4 Kills - Care Package: Call in a package drop by throwing smoke to wherever you want the package to drop. It contains either a random killstreak or ammo and can be used by the other team.
4 Kills - Counter UAV: Blocks enemy UAV
5 Kills - Sentry Gun: Airdrop a sentry gun that fires at enemies.
5 Kills - Predator Missile: Calls in a remote control missile via a laptop which you can guide to kill enemies. You are defenseless while using the missile.
6 Kills - Precision Airstrike: Calls in an airstrike which you can control the direction where it comes from.
7 Kills - Attack Helicopter: Call in an attack helicopter that hovers around and kills enemies.
7 Kills - Harrier Strike: Hovering plane which can attack enemies.
8 Kills - Emergency Airdrop: Call in a supply drop.
9 Kills - Pave Low: Calls in a heavily armored helicopter to kill enemies.
9 Kills - Stealth Bomber: Massive amounts of bombs dropped on your enemies.
11 Kills - Chopper Gunner: Lay waste to enemies as a chopper gunner.
11 Kills - AC-130: You get to be the gunner of an AC-130 gunship via laptop and rain hell upon your enemies. You are defenseless while using the AC-130.
15 Kills - EMP. Enemies can't use any electronic perk. Basically kills all other perks.
25 Kills - Nuke. No, not the Robocop drug... A tactical NUKE. Obliterates enemies.

Your kill streak unlocks stay with you when you die. If your team has already deployed a UAV, keep your UAV Kill Streak reward until it's needed. Don't use a Patriot Missle (or AC130) when you're exposed - get to the back of the map and crouch or lay down. When you're sure you can deploy safely, do so.
Another aspect of not rushing to "deploy" is this: don't run out into the open after you've been killed. Many times, you'll respawn close to where you died; get to shelter of some sort. If you die multiple times in a row, you'll get a Death Streak:
3 Deaths - Copy Cat: Steal the class / weapons of the person that killed you. If you're new to the game, and you're getting killed by more experienced players with better weapons, this is an advantage. As you rank up, this advantage fades.

4 Deaths - Painkiller: Triple health for 10 seconds after spawn. The intent here is to get you the hell outta Dodge if you're getting spawn killed over and over. It's still pretty useless against missles / c130s, and it's also no use if you spawn in a relatively fair location.

Basically, in Modern Warfare 2, avoiding death is probably more important than killing. These "perks" aren't all that great, as a practical matter.

Later, you'll unlock Martyrdom (drop a grenade at your corpse after 4 deaths). This has potential, as does "Final Stand", which is like Last Stand in Modern Warfare, except you can use your primary weapon, and you can actually recover from death!

Collect the rewards

The "Care Package" that gets dropped when you or your teammates get a kill streak can contain UAV blockers and turrets (among other things). Turrets are especially useful at low levels, where you can easily rack up an additional 500+ points of experience by "doing nothing".
Unlock the right stuff
As you level up, you'll unlock several items. When you unlock more than one DECENT attachment to your weapon, be sure to use the Bling perk to allow both attachments simultaneously. Yes, this uses one of your perk slots (the first one), but it can really be advantageous.

At your earliest opportunity (around level 10-11), consider unlocking the Sentry Gun; it's the same sentry gun that's available in the Care Package, and again, the reward can be great, XP-wise.

Stick to the Good Grenades
You'll be able to use the Semtex grenades pretty early in your advancement. I recommend the Semtex grenades (sticky) if you're the type of player that can predict movement. Since the grenades stick, you can position them far more accurately. Plop one onto the corner of a building if you're being chased, or stick one on a window sill to get rid of a sniper. Even if you "miss" with these grenades, you can typically buy yourself more time with them, because you can "clog up" a window or other common snipe location. A regular grenade will likely roll behind a sniper in Modern Warfare 2, but a sticky will force the sniper to fall back away from his spot so that you can advance.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., - First-day sales of Activision Blizzard Inc.'s "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" broke records, raking in an estimated $310 million in North America and the United Kingdom alone.

The video game went on sale all over the world on Tuesday, but Activision provided figures Thursday only for North America and Britain. The company estimates that it sold about 4.7 million copies of the game in the first 24 hours in those markets, making it the biggest-selling launch in the history of entertainment.

The latest installment in the "Call of Duty" action franchise was expected to at least match last year's "Grand Theft Auto IV," which was the most successful video game release in history and at the time may have been the top entertainment launch ever.

That game, from Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., had sold 3.6 million units on its opening day, worth $310 million worldwide. "Call of Duty" made that much in just North America and Britain.

The launch of "Call of Duty" also easily brought in more than last year's record $155 million opening weekend for the Batman movie "The Dark Knight."

Like the previous five "Call of Duty" games, which are all rated "M" for mature (not for kids under 17), this one lets players shoot their way through a complex series of scenes. The game's developer, Infinity Ward, spent two years creating realistic graphics that are amplified in many players' homes by big-screen, high-definition TVs sets and powerful speakers.

Players can fight one another, whether they're at the same game console or in separate locations and connected online. Or a player can dive in alone and get swept into the game, which includes jarring depictions of war and an intricate story of good versus evil.

The game sells for $60 and plays on Windows-based computers, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3.

i prefer the low - shot kills, it is more realistic. hardcore is even more-so.

I agree, that is why I sold it. It dumbs the game down. It's like a magic cheat button. I want another rainbow six game.

A decent gamer can also do this without the little cheat button. Stick control is a talent just like aiming. It forces the person to learn to accuracy, instead of magically appearing on your foe.

I prefer some of the objective based missions of single player in FPS games. Capture the flag and it's many varients just don't do it for objective based fun.

most of the special ops is single player and you have to beat a bunch of it to get to the multi player stuff. It was ok, but nothing fantastic, hence why I sold the game. It was a lot like single player really, you can co-op single player as well I think.

But the mortality rate isnt even close to the 360's... People have ps3's failing after 4 years.

I do realize you had one of the good ones, but MS has officially said the failure rate is over 50%, and put aside billions to send out refurbs after extending warantees (and good on them for doing it).

PS3 is still below 10% failure rate, after 4 years. Its not a small difference.

That said, if you've got a shitload of games for it already, you may as well just pay microsofts fee and send it back for another one. Not sure what they charge, but I know they do it.

Edit: Im sure there are shops that repair broken PS3's in halifax, probably for a lot less then MS does it. Theres one in bathurst, and thats a tiny city, so im sure Hali has a few.

I do realize you had one of the good ones, but MS has officially said the failure rate is over 50%, and put aside billions to send out refurbs after extending warantees (and good on them for doing it).

PS3 is still below 10% failure rate, after 4 years. Its not a small difference.

That said, if you've got a shitload of games for it already, you may as well just pay microsofts fee and send it back for another one. Not sure what they charge, but I know they do it.

Im not a big fan of the 360. I play it and have fun but i feel like the PS3 is just so much better. I love my PS3 and its been great. Only had one problem with it and i fixed it my self for 50 bucks really simple to do. The laser mechanism went out so i replaced it. There was an awesome video on YouTube. But ive had 2 360's and this one is doing okay i just feel like its going to die on me to. Had the PS3 since it came out. 4 years now and its always turned on. thats why i think the Laser went out. I dont leave it on all the time now.

Edit: Im sure there are shops that repair broken PS3's in halifax, probably for a lot less then MS does it. Theres one in bathurst, and thats a tiny city, so im sure Hali has a few.

Yea thats pretty much what i heard. The 360 with the most and PS3 with just a little more than the Wii. But i fixed mine for 50 bucks. Got the bluray laser off ebay and used those videos up at the top to replace. only took like an hour. saved me $135. Sony charges that much to ship and repair.

Constructive criticism:
Theres no need to zoom on the 1H1K info that pops up all the time
I know its your first montage so next time maybe go for more clips, such as triples, collateral followed by another collateral or a couple of singles then another, nice quickscoping streaks, etc.
Also maybe change up the music, use something thats a little less common and not overused on montages?

I guess modding the console, putting the game on the HDD and farting around with it. I saw a vid of MoH:world at war and this guy had some kind of server hack. He was getting thousands of XP points for just 10 point kills on the zombie level. Then he played a different server and killed maybe 3 people and when done it said he had 17777777777779 kills.

No, you can cheat on 360. PS3 is the only console which hasnt been completely hacked yet. The 360 is built too much like a computer, it was hacked in a matter of days of release.

I wouldnt blame IW, honestly. They are just a team, they are owned by Activision. They needed more time to get the game out, and Activision wouldnt give it. They released a buggy, poorly programmed game because they were forced to do so.

Activisions greed led to the leaders of IW being fired, and 30+ more quitting to go work for the new studio IW's founders have just created.
