View Full Version : Tried on some Gloves
I'm in the market for some new gloves as my mediocre Olympia race gloves have developed a hole in one fingertip. So I went to CycleGear to try on some gloves.
Frank Thomas XTI $130 - for the price, unbelievably crappy workmanship. The stitching and material looked like a mess.
Alpinestars SP-2 $100 - decent quality for the price, felt a little thin though.
Dainese Hellfire $160 - by far the best, but also the highest price. Felt twice as thick as the A*, quality of workmanship was impeccable. No intrusive interior seams on the finger tips. Recommended if you have the budget.
I found a pair of SP-1s on closeout for $85 so I bought them hoping it will be a step up from the SP-2.

All Astar gloves are real comfy while they last but wear thin in certain places real quick. I have a pair of GP Techs that look brand new except for the holes right underneath my pinky on both palms. The SP 1's I had wore holes in almost exactly the same place. I just sewed a patch on them and they're fine but they did seem to wear quickly in some strange places.

How fast they wear out on ya? I had a pair of moto gp gloves that lasted me a few years untill the thumbs wore out and now i have a pair of the A*'s they broke in in less than one day and now fell super comfortable, just a PITA to put on and off.

I love the A* Sp-1. They hold up great in a get off. I sold mine after my wreck and they didn't have a mark on them.

Less than a year and the hole was starting in the GP Tech's. In fact the SE rally was the first time I ever put them on...

Hubby has a pair of A* exocet. His first pair he loved, this second pair doesn't fit quite the same... glove fingers are too long.
He used them for racing and they held up very well. I think they might still be OK, but I could be wrong.
I presume you mean AGV Exocet. Looks more machine than man! :D

I wore my GP Pluses to both Rallies and Indy- they're holding up just fine. In fact, you can't tell if they hit the ground...

Yes, AGV. I didn't think A* sounded right but hell, I was going off memory from 7 years ago when I bought him his 1st pair.
He loved them!
These are more machine than man... you need an owners manual to get in the and out of them...Granted they don't look as bad as the AGV, but they have flap after flap after flap.

Seems to be hit or miss with their stuff now a days.
Got my A* SP1 gloves yesterday. They are a little tight around the wrist but not uncomfortable and the protection is definitely a step up from the cheaper $50 gloves I've bought in the past. They do have a seam right at the finger tip of each finger, which is annoying. But so far, so good. We'll see how long they last.
