Hey man, I have some questions about chest pains.

I had some pretty severe chest pains last night so I went up to the emergency room. And they took me in immediately. They sat my ass in a wheel chair and rolled me very quickly down to the chest pain center. They did and EKG, everything looked normal. Blood pressure was normal, pulse was normal, oxygen was at 100% so they dew some blood and sent me for a chest x-ray. x-ray came back negative, blood test seemed ok but kidney function seemed a little high, (possibly dehydrated from the creatine that I take) so they gave a liter IV.

SO the next step was they did 2 cat scans of my lungs, one when i inhaled a some kind of gas and another they put something in an IV and they took more pics of my lungs. Both of those turned out negative.

At this point I'm still having chest pains, so they told me they would set up an outpatient stress test appointment. They wrote me a prescription of vicodin and sent me packing.

I still have the chest pains this morning. Should I go back up to the hospital? WTF else could it be? It's not acid reflux or indigestion for sure. I take a medication for that prevents that 100% of the time.

What else should I be doing? It hurts worse the deeper I breathe in. At this point I'm not worried of it being life threatening. One thing I learned though was that if I ever need more vicodin, complain of chest pains. :lol

Sounds like you have complications from syphilis.

Drink two glasses of orange juice and insert a moldy piece of bread into your ass.
Then stand on your head.

That should alleviate the pains....likely cause by pressure from the swelling

I'm not Tommy, but it sounds wild.

You want some vicodins too I will write some scripts when i come out there next week LOL

I will be making a few assumptions here but here goes.

I would figure they sent off at least one set of cardiac enzymes (ck and troponin) to help rule out cardiac ischemia. If they did a ct of the chest it seems more like theyre worried about a pulmonary embolism. Theres a lot that goes into risk stratification for chest pain, to help better gague who needs what work up.

In our hospital ( youre in the burbs so i am assuming its much more functional than we are LOL) people with the ify stories, like yours, get admitted to a chest pain unit and are stressed that morning.

If its still huting and is bad def go back, cant guarantee they will find anything but its better than sitting at home and having an artery get blocked and you have a heart attack.

What do the "chest pains" feel like ?

Sharp like a knife or something sticking in you or pressure like an elephant or something sitting on your chest ?

I've had the sharp pains and was told I drink too much caffeine but it's not a heart attack. :idk:

In my chest?

The idiots in my hospital think everything is gas so its fun correcting them when its not ;) it still could be reflux/gerd as well. Problem is my job is to worry about the realy bad stuff and rule that out first, then it gets easier.

In my chest?

Is it constant pressure?
Does it spike or come in waves?

I've had the sharp pains before and they radiate down my left arm. I've had them so badly I've had to pull over when driving. Bit scary.

Doc said they were muscle pains and any work I had done came back okay.

Do you get them all the time? Is this the first time? Has it been on going pain or are they intermittent pains?

I've had chest pains before that spike, but this time it's constant.

I've had chest pains before but like the usual guy I didn't go to the hospital. I only went this time because my wife made me. The last time though was as recent as 3 weeks ago.

Well you aren't dying from a heart attack then...HOWEVER I'm not a medical doctor...just play one on the internet and I have stayed in a Holiday Inn Express before.

Seriously though I hope you/they figure it out and can make it go away. It's not any fun being in pain and concerned because "you just don't know".

Sharp.

When is your stress test scheduled?
Do you know if they will be doing a simple "walk on the treadmill" or will they be doing the sonogram stuff.

So far based on your post it sounds like they will eventually find your heart is not the problem.

But I'm not a doctor nor do I play one on TV.

I could also be lying to you in order to not aggravate your stress level.

(but the fact that test came back ok WHILE you were having the pains is something that is not a bad sign. Lack of bad signs are good. The chest pain could mean that deep down...your just a pussy who can't handle a little discomfort.)

Key thing is...good signs so far...try and stay calm and relaxed.

The place where I am having the stress test dones was supposed to call me this morning. I still haven't heard from them, so no I don't have an appointment as of yet.

No pussy here, I had a fucking dump truck loaded with landscape rocks run over my leg and I was walking around without crutches 2 days later against doctors orders.

The pains are old age. Rub some dirt in it and get back to work.

Coming from someone that has to be dragged to the hospital I would go back to the hospital asap.

While your there ask for a sponge bath.

A friend of mine was rushed to the hospital by his wife when he started to have pains like you described. The did work-ups on him and couldn't really find anything, until he told them that he'd been cutting firewood with an axe and got into a zone.

Given the incompetent level of care that must come with socialized medicine you would think so but no, that's when they realized that he'd torn a muscle.

HAve you done any strenuous labor involving your upper body lately or before it started the first time? Do you workout and push heavy weights? I've gotten pains from that before, having muscles seperate or start to tear where they attach. It's hard to tell if it's in the muscle or inside your chest sometimes. It can also gradually get worse until all of a sudden it hurts like hell, I did that when working out years ago.

I had that happen one night. I had some crazy chest pains. My friends wanted to take me to the hospital but I said it doesn't hurt if I don't breathe. While in the hospital they checked me out and did some test. Thats when I remember pounding out a pile of pull ups from my little brothers tree house. It was the first time working out in a while and I didn't take it easy at all.

Well I don't know how much help it'll be, but maybe something to consider. Two problems that run rampant in my family are gall bladder problems and hiatial hernias. Both can almost mimic symptoms of a heart attack. My dad, my dads dad, dads sister, and a few others in my family have had these problems for years, yet everytime they went to the doc everything checked out fine, stress tests and all. My dad has gone to the ER several times and each time everything came back clean. If I remember correctly one doctor finally figured something out and I believe they did trace it to a gall bladder issue. He's had other contributing problems too though.... had to have vascular surgery back in '06 where an artery in his neck was 80% clogged and they had to put a stint in it and some other stuff too

Now I'm usually healthy as a horse... I NEVER get sick. But one day back in April I woke up at 5am with some pretty good chest pains. I figured it was some heart burn or something and tried to go back to sleep, but couldn't cuz it really hurt. I started getting nauseous, then started throwing up even though there was nothing in my stomach and just a little bile coming up and then dry heaving. It kept getting worse and worse, I started breathing real hard (paramedics said I was hyperventilating) and my arms and legs were going numb and tingly and I was shaking, and having a hard time just walking around (having to hold onto stuff). I was home alone and freaking out cuz I didn't know what was going on, and no way I could drive myself so I called paramedics at about 9:00. They came over and did EKG and a bunch of other tests, then took me to the ER and they did some more tests, x-rays, etc. Everything came back perfect, blood pressure was perfect, etc. Funny thing was, about 10-15 mins after getting to the hospital, and throwing up yet again shortly after I got there, I was laying there and just like that, in a matter of a minute or less, I felt perfectly fine like nothing had ever happened. It was the weirdest thing. They never did figure anything out as to what happened. When I talked to my dad about it, he said that sounds EXACTLY like a hiatial hernia. I did some looking around, and based on the symptoms and how fast it went away, I'm kinda thinking that's what it may have been. Has never happened before and hasn't happened since.

So yea.... gall bladder and hiatial hernias, just something to think about if the docs aren't able to find anything. They've been a gremlin in my family and always seem to be able to hide when it comes to body diag, hahah

PE's are tricky to diagnose at times, used to be tougher because we had to do a vq scan, but now we can use a speciffic type of ct scan to rule them out so its a lot easier.

hey did a v/q scan at night, damn th etechs love that. they get some stupid amounts of overtime to come in and do them at our hospital. Then again your hospital is prolly in a much more civilized community than mine.
