A young woman was attacked by coyotes in the cape breton highlands national park (the cabot trail circles it) and died from her injuries. I believe it's the first recorded death by coyotes in canada.

See, if she'd been carrying a firearm this never would have happened. ;)

Still, that's amazing. I've never been afraid of coyotes- I can't fathom a pack desperate or brave enough to try to take on an adult.

hard to say... if they were willing to attack a human... I'd guess they were starving... and she'd have to have killed a couple before they'd take off if that's the case...

I read an account in a hunting magazine where a pack of wolves (yeah I know more aggressive by nature) attacked a guy. he was armed and he killed 4 before the rest (about 5 more) fled... lucky as he only had a round left in his clip...

It wasn't the first recorded death (second I believe) but it's incredibly rare.

Odd thing is I read about this in a UK paper before I heard about it in Canada.

Yeah I heard about this last week. I've never heard of Coyotes attacking...especially killing a human. We have them around here too but usually it's just your cat or small dog you have to worry about.

People in the neighbourhood think I'm nuts for saying it, but I saw one running through our parking lot in Brampton. I don't know why they think we can't have them here if they've been reported in The Beaches, just outside downtown Toronto.

The thing is, TMall and I grew up in a place where coyotes are more common than most game. They never attack people, and are usually scared to death. You can always hear them howl, but aside from deer and rabit, they stay out of sight.

Of course they hunt in packs. But its unheard of for them to hunt humans. They really are cowardly animals.

Every time I've seen a coyote it was solitary. Do they generally hunt in packs?

They're pretty common around here. People get their stupid little purebred fuzzball dogs eaten by them when they escape their purses.

I've seen them on every farm I've ever worked on. They're all over the city now too. I don't let the dogs out at night alone. Too risky where they live.

Makes no sense to me either, why ruin a perfectly good breed of wolf and make it half dog?

Ive heard stories of pet wolves among the natives when i worked up in northern Alberta years ago. No idea if its true or not, but damn what an impressive animal they would be to own!

they dont make good pets. Imagine a giant dog that marks no matter what and can never be brought into public or in the company of guests.

Well, you wont find any 'Public' in northern alberta. Its a frozen wasteland, with small native villages.

Im sure through generations of breeding, you can get the wild temper out of them.

but, as I said, they are stories, and probably have little truth to them.

And if it actually did bite someone, it would be one very dead pet alligator.

are we talking about an alligator, or a baby alligator?

I cant see too many people running loose with 14 foot lizards that chomp large animals for fun. Small ones are pretty cool though.

they are a few feet long and harmless when their young. No different than taking a dog out in public. Any dog could bite, right?

Just saying, theres different degrees of ridiculous. If it was small and harmless, and maybe went with her costume, why not?

My grandfather had a dog that was half Husky and half Wolf. His name was Bandit. He was a great dog.

My cousin would walk it with a chain that was about the size of the ones I use to chain down a 3.5 ton excavator to a trailer.

Well it was a baby, but at some point it will be large. She claimed like 7 or 8 feet. GTFO with that shit. I didn't get near it.

That little fella would have a hard time to break your skin. You'd probably have to let him chew for a while.

BS.

The main problem with wolves as pets is that they will howl, no matter what.
My aunt had a timber wolf named Bandit. He was all legs. At 10 months(the only time I saw him), he was hip high on me at the shoulders and was a great pet. He would play gentle or rough, depending on who was playing with him.
He did not mark anywhere, and he was fine in public.
The reason they had to give him up was because of the howling. It is not like a dog howling, wolves are freaking loud. He could be heard miles away.

He was born in the Calagary Zoo, and after my aunt had him, he ended up going to the Papanak Zoo(http://www.papanack.com) and has since been moved to a zoo somewhere in the US.

I don't think that there are many absolutes, when you start to mix breeds. I knew a guy down in Huntsville, AL who claimed that his dog was half husky and half wolf (and it looked the part). The dog was mild tempered and would take a fair bit of abuse from his owner, without so much as a snap. I never heard the dog make more than a couple of quiet wuffs during the week that I was there. It was prone to escaping and roaming the neighbourhood though.

Dude, there are coyotes roaming around the trail behind our house. The first time I saw them(also the first time I'd ever seen a coyote at all) they were in a pack of about 5 and I nearly peed my pants I was so scared. My husband tried to tell me they would never attack a human.

I'm not walking back there anymore. :panic:

I saw my first coyote Saturday. I was leaving my friends house around 3am and i saw 2 animals bouncing along on the other side of the street. Thinking they were strays i slowed the car down and the 2 coyotes stopped and looked right at me. They were beautiful, but i realized that they were coyotes and not stray house dogs and kept going.

Well i was lost and then about 5 minutes later came back down that road and saw coyote remnants. No blood, but it looked like a chunk of flesh or tail.

Yes and she's the type of dumbazz I hear about from time to time that buys something like that because it's so cute but then ot gets too big to feed/handle and care for so they take it out to a local lake like we have here and turn it loose. It will end up biting/killing someone or eating someones pet or die because it can't survive the winter. :wtfru:

Cayotes are vermin, like big rats that run in packs. Kill on sight.
