View Full Version : droid buyers?
What do yall think?
Got to play with one and the Android OS is the future. Shit is awesome. The phone won't be an iphone killer, but the OS definitely will be the go to OS for phones. Can't wait to see what some other companies do with the android OS.

I just got mine few hours ago, I thought Id have it earlier but I couldnt get out of work. So far I havent had a chance to do much, I did use the turn-by-turn navigation on the way home from Best Buy and its pretty damn nice. Also the voice search works really well, it actually understands what youre saying the first time. The screen is awesome btw.
I'm at the store playing with it now. First twfix post via droid? Ftw

Because the iphone has a cult following right now and this is just the first in a long line of Android 2 OS phones that is due out. Apple is the only company making Apple's OS phones aka iphones. Android 2 is being adopted by several companies. There are going to be a lot of Android phones coming out by a bunch of different companies. The phone isn't the iphone killer, it's the OS that will prevail.

Right on. I'm due for an upgrade in December (currently with AT&T) and am wondering if I'm going to go with the 3Gs or possibly get something different.
I use my iPhone so much that the lack of multi-tasking is a real pain. Like when I'm listening to ESPN radio and I want to reply to a text or something.

I'll wait until the OS is available on a non-slider phone. I can't stand sliders........I don't text much anyway, and slider mechanisms always feel fragile and cheap. Anything plastic that moves is going to break eventually.

theres no assist spring on the droid. has a very solid feeling to it.

open source, you dont have to wait for mommy to approve of your programs. you should google about the benefits of "rooting" the G1. can do amazing things

I played with one for a while this afternoon... pretty cool. I'm not a "smart phone" kinda guy though. Besides, by the time I want one, Samsung will have put one out with a 10 meg camera on it!:rockwoot::lol:

For the iPhone Apple completely controls the software that can be developed and released on it through the iTunes App store. So if a program competes with another of their or ATT's service or falls outside their moral guidelines then it won't be approved.
The Android OS however is open source so anyone can make and release a program for it. Thereby greatly increasing the freedom of development and creativity that can be used.

Definitely the new gen GPS' in the phones are way better... mine uses Telenav and it works better than my current GPS. Does the Droid take a long time to initiate or is it basically Garmin fast?

Open source as described by Kaneman, no mommy state. You want an app for that, it can be made and distributed without anyone being able to take it away or deny it from the app store because some company had a hissy.
It has all the benefits of a nonapple phone, access to the battery and such
The OS is nice and refined.
It can multitask, you can open pandora and still use the phone and everything else. iphone is limited hugely on this.
The OS operates smoothly and quickly which has hampered a lot of RIM blackberries of late.
It's like the best of all worlds.

I'm up for a new phone in April, but I'm on Verizon. Will have to see how much they screw up the OS (in order to "value add")

as far as i could see from playing with it, no branding. it felt very similar in operation to my g1 on cupcake. just slightly better in every way

Droid is for Verizon only at this point. Verizon has completely changed their tune because of what they lost when they turned down the iphone. Verizon is now the most open network in America because of the Droid.

Got mine last night and love it, still getting use to it but its a lot faster then the pro 2 I had. The one and only complaint I have is that I can't set up yahoo through the email app, but should only be a temp problem cuz google wants u to use a gmail account. The techs said it should be available in a few weeks

Just read a report that Apple will have a combination CDMA/GSM iPhone in Q3 2010 that Verizon will sell.

the Droid is awesome. The screen is brilliant, and the touch is so responsive i've only used the ful qwerty like twice, even my fat little fingers can navigate well. it is about 20,000,000,000 x better then my POS Glyde. Verizon developers should have been shot after that one.
Oh, mine came fully assembled with a beautiful Trunk to keep my accessories in.
I added the dock station, needed a new alarm clark anyway, wow, it's a neat little gadget, converts the screen to a full multimedia desk clock showing weather and picturs or whatever, has an easy backlight button on the screen so it is nice and soft at night, but turns on during the day.
The multi tasking is great, can talk on the phone, search for directions in google maps all while listening to some tunes if you wish.
The number of apps is less then the iphone, but i don't need 20 different versions of a flame or compass, and ya, i have those silly ones already. It does everything i want so far.
Only complaint so far is on one of the apps, the verison visual voicemail won't work while you are connected to WiFi, you have to turn off Wifi to get voicemail? wtf, i knnow is silly, but annoying.

i didnt realise anyone else on here was laboring with the glyde  tell me did you have the capacitive or reactive screened one? the cap screened version is for the dogs. the reactive is reasonably decent for a device with locked up firmware

I had the 1st gen one, it took more then one trip across the room. I don't know how many calls I missed or people I called on accident cause of that phone. Then if it would work, it would lock up and reboot, haha. wow...just wow. The Droid is a fricken breath of fresh air!

i hear ya man, i got mine in the first week and have made many many trips to verizon for new firmware/new glydes. last one had the fixed screen and it was a revelation in comparison lol

Android will be released on many other phones by then, I can't wait to see what other people besides motorola do with this OS. I have never been a big fan of motorola products.

I picked mine up on Friday and like it a lot better than my POS Storm--sorry Storm folks. I think the iPhone does a few things better e.g. the built in iPod and the HTML email is a little cleaner. However, I like Verizon better than AT&T and this phone does a few things better than the iPhone, plus the web browser is killer. Overall this phone is really great and I like the physical keyboard and the screen is big, bright and amazing.
How is everyone's battery life? I think it is OK, but not great.
I haven't installed many apps or widgets. What has everyone else installed? Any cool accessories?
One really cool app for both Mac and Windows users is from Sailing software. They make an awesome cellphone sync utility that can use for free or upgrade with pay. It also syncs iTunes music (Mac and Windows), your photo library and videos. Really helpful for the device. The only thing you need to make sure you do is enable USB mass storage in the notification area when the phone asks or it won't work.
Check it out.

There is no verizon lock down on any of the software and it is just the plain android front end, no moto-blur or anything. There is also the HTC Eris for verizon with Android, but it is a little lower end and no physical keyboard. HTC makes nice hardware and if you like there touch phones this one looked really cool. I think the Verizon / Google deal has kind of forced Verizon to respect the open source spirit of the device.

My battery life has been good enough to get me through the day. It starts to get low in the evening but it hasnt been a problem. I usually keep GPS on, wifi off when I dont need it and I havent been playing a lot of music so far.
Apps I like:
Wapedia - wikipedia app
SportsTap Widget - live scores
Weather Channel Widget
ShopSavvy - barcode scanner
TorrentFu - scans barcodes and tells you where to download the torrent for it
GPS Status - gives you all of the raw gps data youd get from a handheld gps
Astro File manager
Google Voice and Google Sky
Locale (lets you program settings based on time or location or other variables, you could have your wifi turn on automatically when youre at home or have your ringer go silent when youre at school)
