NC school sells test points for $20 to raise money
(AP) – 1 day ago

GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A middle school in North Carolina is selling test scores to students in a bid to raise money. The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Wednesday that a parent advisory council at Rosewood Middle School in Goldsboro come up with the fundraising plan after last year's chocolate sale flopped.

The school will sell 20 test points to students for $20.

Students can add 10 extra points to each of two tests of their choice. The extra points could take a student from a "B" to an "A" on those tests or from a failing grade to a passing grade.

Principal Susie Shepherd says it's not enough of an impact to change a student's overall grades.

Officials at the state Department of Public Instruction say exchanging grades for money teaches children the wrong lessons.

Not surprising. The hick-town known as Goldsboro, NC can't offer the salary or quality of life required to attract high-quality school principals who have a clue.

Hell it works here too. You just have to know when to do it and be able to tell who will go for it.

I'm going to run that by my professor today. I have an A but could use an A++.

I can't wait until people start screaming racism on this one.

What would work better is if your kid makes an A on a test you owe the school nothing. They make a B you owe the school $100. Make a C $300 and make a D/F you owe $600. I bet parents take an interest in their childs education then.

Good football players exempt of course.

I don't support the idea, but the principal is probably right. Students can improve their score on 2 tests, but their overall class grade could be minimally impacted. It all depends how many tests there are and what their weighting is against mid-terms and final exams.

But if a class only has 2-3 tests the whole semester :idk:

Then she probably wouldn't say their overall grades wouldn't be impacted.

Technically its "illegal" here and can get you sent to Jail.
I'm talking about other countries where you have to slip everyone a $100 just to get a permit.

So for maybe $100.00 a clueless student who should be held back for a year can advance to the next grade?

I actually agree with Trip...it's how the world works :idk: It’s how most politicians got thru school anyway (parents money/influence) :rockwoot:

We can only hope!

The way the article reads, I think it's a $20 cap.

Students can add 10 extra points to each of two tests of their choice.

Who gives a flying fuck? They're not teaching anything useful or relevant anyway so their grades are a very moot point. Especially considering they won't fail you anyway...

So what you're saying is that the education system is broken so go on breaking it worse, rather than fixing it?

Actually it all boils down to the EOG's here in NC (End of Grade test)

If you can't pass that you don't PASS

And they spend ALL year just prepping for that. IF you LEARN anything as a side effect, then that’s great...but it's about EOG's. Especially since the teachers evaluation is solely based off their student’s performance OF the EOG's

Here if you have failing grades they ask your parents if they want to hold you back a grade. If not, on you go.

Of course, since they're not teaching anything substantial failing doesn't really mean shit anyway.

I'm pretty impressed with the level of education that my kids get and the standards that they are held to. While there are a lot of schools that don't educate worth a fuck, there are some schools that are trying to develop citizens that contribute to society and encourage them to continue their education beyond high school. This school in the article is not doing us any favors though. No wonder why experts say most adults only have an 8th grade education. It's schools like this.

All I remember it being was a small town next to an AFB. Nothing noteworthy. The real money in NC is elsewhere.

I believe a big part of the problem is preparing students to continue their education beyond high school. College just isn't going to happen for all those kids, so lets get 'em ready for the real world. You can't do that with a plethora of standardized tests.

Pretty much. I remember in high school all teachers tried to do (for the college prep students) was prepare them fro the SAT/ACT and crap like that and teach them "how to test". I'm in college and it's funny watching the HS kids come in because they are fucking clueless about shit they learned 3 months earlier. I remember a kid confused as hell asking the professer about order of operations. Yet somehow this kid actually tested into the college level math classes.
