So we discovered on Tuesday that both cats have fleas. :(

Wednesday husband bug bombs the house, bathes both cats with supposed flea shampoo and then gives them that oily treatment stuff on the back of their necks.

Last night we noticed that not only are the fleas still there, they are actually crawling around in the oily stuff that is supposed to kill them! :wtf:

He bought the Hartz brand of shampoo and treatment and we are wondering:

1. How long is supposed to take for the fleas to die?
2. If they are not dying, how soon can we use a different treatment(one that actually works)
3. Which treatments actually work?

Any suggestions?

Haven't had cats in a few years, but the way that you started out is good. Unfortunately the eggs that haven't already hatched end up hatching a couple of weeks later and you end up having to do it all over again. There may have been eggs that hatched just after you did the first hit.

You just have to be persistent. One problem is that once you get the fleas to leave the cats alone, they'll start jumping on you.

Napalm.

(Get a prescription from the vet for flea drops that go behind the cat's neck)

First thing I'd do is get rid of the Hartz. It's junk, and quite frankly, has been linked to health problems in dogs. Seizures and such.

Shave their hair off and soak them in gasoline. :lol

There's really only one way to really get rid of fleas in your home, and it's a lot of work.

Basically, the trick is to NEVER STOP RUNNING THE VACUUM.

Carpets, under furniture, anywhere that the pets hang out. VACUUM, VACUUM, VACUUM!!!

I had fleas on both my cats and used a product called Advantage. You have to get it from a vet but it killed them REALLY fast. I didn't see a single flea on either of them a day after treatment. It is kinda pricey but works great and will kill all the fleas in your home.

Good stuff. We used that on the cat and FrontLine on our dog. No fleas.

We tried Hartz one time on the dog to save $$ and he had a reaction/skin irritation and we tossed it. :idk:

Oh and for the record. I didn't have to vacuum at all...well except to clean up the dead fleas.

Go get a big box of 20 Mule Team Borax. Sprinkle it on the carpets throughout the entire house. Leave it set for a few days/a week and vacuum it up.

You can buy 20 Mule Team Borax at WalMart in the laundry detergent isle.

Yes, I'm serious about the borax http://www.tipking.co.uk/tip/6575.html

One summer the fleas came in the basement at m other house. The borax took care of them in under a week.

Borax fucks up some roaches too. Bugs walk through it, end up ingesting it, and it fucks 'em up from the inside out.

Good shit.

Umm... what happens if your pets ingest it?:idk:

FWIW, I just won the war here and it was an epic battle to be sure!

1st throw away any and all pet store flea crap...they all suck!!! Trust me, I tried several before giving up.

2nd bomb!!! Wait a few days and bomb again!

3rd VACUUM!!!

4th Bathe the animals to correspond to the bombings

5th Use Frontline

I got it on the cheap from Australia of all places- I'll try and find the link. It took a few days to come but it was like less than half, I think.

Most of all, be diligent and keep them inside as much as possible while you are at war! If you keep them in your yard, spray down your yard as well and keep them away from other animals until you have dosed them with Frontline.

Check Amazon, super good deals there!

Well, it works by dehydrating the bugs from the inside.

In the amounts you'd use for treating for bugs, it's effective against insects, but probably not enough to dehydrate fluffy.

Cool. I've heard about borax before but I've always been afraid of poisoning my pets.

Puggy had fleas once, what a pain in the ass.

I bathed her a couple of times and fleas fell off into the suds and washed off. and then put advantage on her too. took about 48 hours and didn't see anymore.

i don't remember bombing the house, but i did use a flea spray and sprayed everywhere and then washed all the sheets.

I got her shampoo and flea spray from the vet, but i forgot what brand it was. I smelled really potent, it was in a white and navy bottle.

Advantage is amazing. Both my cats got fleas once and as soon as I put the Advantage on them I started to see fleas literally falling off the cats and dying. They would fall out of their fur and struggle on the ground where I'd pick them up in a piece of toilet paper and squeeze em til they popped.

TIMES ELEVENTY BILLION!!! Dont use anything you get from Walmart!! I put that crap on my cat and she started foaming at the mouth and had seizures for hours even tho I immediately washed it off. It was horrible.

Go to your vet, get a small pill for each cat called Capstar, get some advantage from the vet and get some carpet powder from walmart and call it good.

The Capstar kills everything on the animal within 24 hours, there is no jumping off. The advantage works for the month period. The carpet powder will need to sit for at least 30 minutes, vacuum, and you should see no more fleas. Repeat as needed.

(I had 7 indoor cats and using this method, no problems ever.)

Yeah, my dog got seizures when we used Hartz flea/tic stuff on him. I never put together that the Hartz could have been the problem. Then I did a story on it. Stopped using that shit and he hasn't had one since. Fuck that garbage. No vet will recommend it.

I read the warnings, but was poor as shit and figured it would never happen. Out of 7, she was the only one who reacted and quite literally could have died. It was a terrible night and taught me a lesson. I'll skimp on other things, but not my pet care.

I was unfamiliar with the whole situation until I did the story when I worked in news. And I thought, man, I have some of that stuff at home. It helped for b-roll though...

Because people don't know any better. Most animals will never react, and people don't wanna pay 4 time the price at their vets.

It's simple; once the cost of the lawsuits from dogs dying exceeds the profits from the product, then and only then will it be removed from the shelves.

Yep that would be a tough case though... It's not like you aren't warned all over the package and hell, even on a MOTORCYCLE FORUM about the possible side effects...

Okay, I know I posted in this thread over the weekend, what the hell?

I ordered some Advantage from Amazon( $10 cheaper than petmeds.com).

I read up on Capstar and the consensus is that you use that when nothing else works. If for some reason the Advantage doesn't work, I'll worry about it then.

My husband now feels horribly guilty for buying the Hartz stuff. He just didn't know.

Thanks for all the tips folks! Me and the kitties appreciate it! :dthumb:

Don't have cats, just four dogs. Use Frontline or Advantage, then mix boric acid powder (or borax) w/carpet fresh and dust the carpets, then vacuum. If fleas leave the animal, the stuff in the carpet gets 'em. Check w/vet about the borax since cats love to lick their paws, etc. It's never bothered the dogs. The first advertisement for "dry" flea control I ever saw was at the vet's office.

Now that you've used the Hartz on them, you'll need to check with the vet as to when you can put the Advantage on them. You don't want to double up on stuff. Also, if you use Advantage, DO NOT use a flea shampoo. Just a good shampoo will do.
