That's right, I said it! I wanna know whats up with blackies not leaving a tip for personal services. I've waited tables at a couple different restaurants, I've got two friends that deliver pizza by night and my wife is a stylist, The overwhelming consensus is that black people are crappy tippers...if they leave you anything at all. In fact, the ONLY times I ever got snubbed on the tip waiting tables was by black people.

So if you're reading this and you're black post up because we want the truth!

Growing up in a mixed race household, where sometimes I'd go out with the white side and other times with the blacks side

If the server was white
A. Treated differently than other non black people in the restaurant. No smile, no emotion whasoever. They were almost mechanical in the way they served us. If they screwed up the order or something wasn't right and my mother or stepfather said something there was a little attitude in the response. End result....crappy tip. This is a pretty conssitent thing whenever dealing with someone working in retail, whether cashier, salesperson or server. There is always that kinda cold atitude meanwhile the table next to us or the person in front of us on line in a store gets the smile, how are you and bubbly demeanor. Over time, you just expect it and end up nitpicking everything about the server.

That being said whenever I take family out, I handle the bill. I don't have that kind of baggage that older family member have.

2. Growing up in the typical poor, pay check to paycheck black household...it was an absolute rarity that we went out to restaurants. When we did go out (I can remember twice), it came down to tipping what you could afford to tip. Do it long enough and when you finally do have money you are just used to tipping smaller amounts (the notorious 5'ver. Wasn't till mid teens that we even knew about proper "tipping" guidelines. As a result, I've spent years overtipping trying to right the wrongs of the past.
3. Plain ignorance of tipping protocol.
4. The last I can think of is something that's not "black" but common in other parts of the world. "Your menu says my meal should cost X amount of dollars and that what I'm giving you. I'm not going to give you extra for doing your job".

Since we are having one of THOSE threads

How about Chinese? They'll tip...but they try and haggle for 4 hours.
Total = $50
"I give you $40...We call even!! Yes?"

What about the Italians? Those assholes....there could be line out the door and those people push all the way to the front. They then make a racket and complain about the tax.

What about US North East Jews?
I'm not touching that one.

i may be taken out by the klan for revealing this,
This is exactly why there are all the code words in the BIZ for black people -
"Oh no a table of 14 CANADIANS just sat down, i don't want that table , do you?"

etc etc

also, what about the tables that dont tip, mercilessly running around the server for worthless shit, like topping off water that 85% full, plates of finely cut lemons, extra napkins (to throw on the floor) , and then on top of no tip, leaving the biggest mess that takes a 5 person team to clean the table, sanitize the seats and sweep and mop the floor?!!? i think it is the strategy that if the table is in such general disarray that you are not even supposed to notice that there is no tip until you have shoveled through 1' layer of crap and are looking at a bleak tipless table to realize it. of course by that time, they are 20 minutes gone.

Though this thread reminds me of some very racist/sexist/homophobic/mexican/whitey jokes I heard the other day and I remember one of them was "Why don't black people tip well". I can't recall the reply though.

I always heard the worst was families for tipping or at least not worth the tip you get for all the bullshit you have to deal with.

I couldn't be a server, especially after working my current job. I literally almost got into a fist fight with a guy plus we cussed each other out. The fucker called the company my company works for and got in contact with my boss. He told me and said "Next time hit him with a line hammer so I don't have to hear him bitch. I had to cuss him out for 5minutes before he hung up". I love my job (hate my pay).

As soon as someone called me blackie the tip would disappear. And maybe your rims.

I tip but its based on service. Give me great service I will tip well. I have tipped as high as 45% before.

We had one woman wait on us at Boston Pizza about 4 or 5 times in a row. She was amazing every time. We waited 10 minutes that last time to tell her boss how good she was. He said I know, thats why I'm going to marry her. We laughed but he wasn't joking. They were engaged.

Okay black people don't tip because when you kidnapped us from our native land and forced us to work under the whip, and subsequently freed us. You forgot to explain things like "tipping", being quiet in theaters, using condoms, using our "inside voices", closing our mouths and not talking when we eat, "belts" and how to properly size pants/clothing, etc. Slowly, some of us are catching up but I fear that it may be a while....

That and we barely had the money to eat out in the first place, forget about drinks and tips. You have to admit, when niggas gots money dey ain't afeared o' spending dat shit!!!

I took a job installing security systems for ADT... Nothing fancy but it's easy (although a bit frustrating) and there's money to be made. The office that I'm in is almost entirely new people so there are some growing pains but hopefully they will be worked out soon.

People are really paranoid these days! Besides, it really is a decent system if only to protect your pet from fire when you're not home. I definitely don't think that I'm doing the "Lord's work" or anything but I do feel that we provide an important service that can potentially save lives and property.:idk:

That's the funny thing about some industries... they seem to boom during times of economic turmoil. Security systems seem to be one of them to an extent. I guess some people use these times to excuse a life of crime.:idk: If you're shoplifting bread from Walmart to feed your family- I feel sorry for you. Take up your entire area for 3 hours, then you leave you a Bible pamphlet. :hangman:

This happened to my sister-in-law. She made it to the register before they left, and told them that a bible message wasn't going to feed her two kids and to shove it up their asses and never come back. :lmao:

Yes, she kept her job, and the rest of the staff, including the owner, applauded her. :lmao:

while we have probably all had to deal with that situation at one time or another, if I were the owner I would have let your sister go while they were there. they will definitely go home and begin telling their friends how terribly rude the server was. Yes it sucks they feel that is a tip to "bring you to the Lord" but it is a TIP not a required amount to be paid.

when I worked for tips it wasn't limited to race. It was limited to income. At least in my area it was. Wealthier, upper middle class families (and up) tipped almost nothing. it was like it was beneath them. They're buy food from my restaurant...so that should suffice. It keeps me employed.

People who were in the lower class (blue collar...people who came in still dirty from a day's work) tipped very well and were very appreciative of me. I'm guessing they'd spent their days getting ordered around for peanuts and knew how I felt.

I deliver pizza three days a week in Mississippi. We have a lot black people here, and they don't tip fuck-all. Additionally, the black tech school students on base from all over the country don't tip. The black delivery drivers where I work bitch about taking deliveries to black people because they know they aren't getting shit. My boss is black and when we have this conversation he tells me how he tips every time and that no all black people are like that. We went to a going away luncheon today - guess who didn't tip. My old supervisor put it simply a while back when he said "Of course they don't tip - you owe them something."

I had a black guy argue with me about tipping once on a run. I pulled up to his 250k house with an Escalade, a Mercedes and a BMW parked out front, the house I had to drive five miles and twenty minutes to one way in 1700 traffic. He walked to the door and on an order that was $26 and something handed me exact change, then said "That's all you, playa." It had been a long day so I said "Hey, thanks for the tip pal." He got real frosty and told me in no uncertain terms that my tip was included in the price. I told the guy that no, my tip is not in fact included with the order price. There's a two dollar delivery charge of which 38 cents is mine to cover my gas, as well as 4.5% of your total order price. I work for minimum wage and by the way, we're on a split wage so for the 40 minutes I'm on the delivery to your faraway mansion I'm actually working for $2.50 an hour, and in spite of you being a complete ass clown your pizza was hot and at your door in half he time we quoted you, and do you really fucking think I did all that for $1.55 when gas is $5 a gallon? He started getting really pissed so I let him run on for a minute and then told him not to order from us any more. He still can't and this was forever ago.

And as for being poor, if you can't afford three dollars for the pizza guy then you don't need to spend thirty dollars to have it delivered. Save some money and eat hamburger helper or come get it your goddam self.

So you'd rather restaurants pay their servers $12+ an hour plus benefits to give them a comparable salary? That way you can pay 3X as much for your meal instead of leaving a decent 20% tip. Unless of course you have a better idea....?

Or I guess they could just get paid minimum wage. Just imagine the quality of service you'd get then...it would pretty much take all the fun out of going out to eat.

For real people, if you're too fucking cheap to leave a tip then don't go out, don't order food and don't get any personal service. You can be the ones to deal with Indian customer service and automated call lines.

No, I'm not fine with a 25 dollar burger. Grasping at straws to prove a point? Its not going to happen.

But one could easily assume she gives the bare minimum...

That would be assuming something that wasn't stated and is likely incorrect. you lot are beating on her for something that she didn't say.

For myself, I understand that tipping is how a server makes ends meet, however, I feel no obligation to ALWAYS give a tip. If the service was non existent, then there is no tip. I have had servers who were surly, slow, and inept. That usually earns a tip that brings it up to the next dollar, so I can get out of the place without waiting for change. OTOH I'm a notorious OVER-tipper, when the service is good. A 25% tip is the norm; better for exemplary service. Hell, if I'm in The Waffle House I plunk down a twenty for a $10.00 cheque.

One thing that really annoys me, that I've run into in upscale restaurants or when the party is 8 or more people, is the *enforced* tip placed right on the bill. Those people get burnt because they don't get a penny more from me. There's a reason why it's referred to as a 'gratuity', rather than a 'mandatory.'

Its not a job paying $2 an hour, its a job that relies on tips. No server actually makes $2 an hour.

Anyone who values the experience of going out to eat and being waited on while eating good food should realize the tip system is the best way to accomplish that goal.

So that means you don't ever go out to eat, right? You realize those people(at least in America) make $2.15 an hour?

Talk about a load of bullshit.

I guess only Papa Complex got that I still tip (and well). I don't believe in a lot of systems but still participate in them.

I tip and I tip well. I'm kind to servers and understand their job as I've done it. I probably tip more than most for good service. But I'm not going to participate in an online pissing match becuase you don't understand what I wrote. :skep: Is this why you made such a great server? :td:

So you'd rather restaurants pay their servers $12+ an hour plus benefits to give them a comparable salary? That way you can pay 3X as much for your meal instead of leaving a decent 20% tip. Unless of course you have a better idea....?

Or I guess they could just get paid minimum wage. Just imagine the quality of service you'd get then...it would pretty much take all the fun out of going out to eat.

For real people, if you're too fucking cheap to leave a tip then don't go out, don't order food and don't get any personal service. You can be the ones to deal with Indian customer service and automated call lines.

I'm not cheap and like I said before I tip and tip well.

In Canada servers make minimum wage. I understand that it's different in the States so when I'm in the States I tip even more (my usual is 20% in Canada but I definitely up that in the States).

I just think the whole concept is weird. You don't tip the cashier at Walmart yet they make the same amount (in Canada). Or how about at Subway when they have a tip jar? I think it's an odd system yet like I said before I TIP!

For the people ripping on Kell: She said that she doesn't believe in tipping, BUT DOES IT ANYWAY.

Thank you. And PC's been out to eat with me. I don't remember getting the spitty burger but maybe he got it. :lmao:

If they are willing to work for the hopes of getting 20% on a order, then how will a burger jump to $25 if the the employer had to pay the staff?

I understand that there will be other cost to the employer but it would not make the cost of a burger $25.

I always say that its to your employer to pay your wage. If I give you extra, that's a bonus. If you're dependant on my kindness to make a living, you better pour on the charm and go that extra mile. If not, looks like its 2 an hour for you. And my conscience WILL be fine with it.

The tip is what gets you stellar service when you go out to eat, its not because people enjoy bringing you food. If restaurants start paying minimum wage to get away from the tip system you are going to get the absolute worst service any time you go out to eat or go to the bar.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Just to get one thing straight...tipping is to be earned...no doubt. Crappy service or a nasty attitude = little to no tip...plain and simple.

Good service = good tip...that's just the way it is in the US for most at least.

I also get tired of seeing tip jars everywhere in places that one used to not even tip in the first place.

I agree. People look at people and say this person looks like a good tipper and this one doesn't. Maybe they are pre judging the customer before getting to the table and then treating them poorly because they expect a poor tip.

If you work for tips or commission (which I do) always give amazing service. You might not get a great tip that time (some people are cheap, some are just assholes) but if you always treat that person great each and every time they might change. Also your other tables can see how your treating that table as well.

Waiters up here are paid minimum wage by law. They do get tips (eastern canadians tip well), but if you have to rely on it, find something else.

You have that backwards. Steller service is what gets you a great tip. You know your wage when you apply for a job. You negotiate a wage. When you agree to that you do your job for that amount.

With serving tables you don't negotiate your pay before you start. You work hard to earn a great pay. Not everyone has the same pay scale just like other jobs.

If you want a set pay you have to take a job paying one. If you want the "chance" to make more you take a job paying tips or commission.

Some people will never get it.

I always tip the pizza guy $5... the store is 3/4 of a mile away... and they are alway fast/friendly and the pizza is always hot (yeah, I could just go get the thing but I LIKE having it delivered).

A few years ago I went to dinner with my family. One of the aunts bought and honestly forgot to leave ANYTHING! The waitress chased us out in the parking lot, asked us if we meant to NOT tip her. My poor aunt was mortified and tipped her quite nicely...

I don't know about the skin color thing but when I was waitressing the worst tip I ever got was from a couple of guys who said I was the best waitress they ever had then proceeded to leave me a dollar... on a $30 tab. I was speechless.

Exactly. That is my point. If someone essentially went through the motions, then they didn't earn a tip. If I'm looking around and having to snag another server when I need a refill, then the tip wasn't earned. If the meal that arrives is incorrect and the server is nowhere to be found, then the tip wasn't earned. I make allowances for when the place is busy.

I once had a server who took 40 minutes to show up after we were seated. He got EVERY order wrong. When we couldn't find him, we went to the manager to ask what was up. Ten minutes later the server arrived at our table, pulled out a chair for himself, then spent 10 minutes telling us about how he was whacked out from going to a 'team building session' the night before and was still hung over. Should I have given him one penny in tip? I don't think so.

OTOH if the server always seems to be there when my glass is almost empty and can be found with a wave, even if it's to correct an order that was wrong, that server is getting a good tip. An 'OK' tip from me is 20%. A good tip might be 50% or, as I previously mentioned, a $20.00 payment for a $10.00 cheque.

Yesterday I helped a customer that with a product he was having problems with, I spent at least 15 minutes with him. This wasn't even my customer. I didn't sell him the product he needed help with. I still treated him like he was my customer. Chances are he will remember me next time he comes in.

I helped another guy the same day. I thought he was buying a product but it turned out he bought it the day before. While explaining the product to him he said I wish you were here yesterday because I would have bought the right product the first time. He returned the product and then I gave him the one he really needed. I then helped him set up the product because he wasn't going to be able to do this at home. I did that for him and he couldn't have been happier. He asked how much he owed me. I told him not a thing. He then decided he needed a case for his product and bought that from me.

About 10 minutes later my manager came up to tell me that that customer went to customer service to let them know how great the service I provided was. When they told him I was new they said he couldn't believe that I was new there. If he needs to buy something else or knows someone that needs something I sell I have a good feeling that they will come my way.

In Canada servers make minimum wage.

They actually make a little less than minimum wage.
http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/es/pubs/guide/minwage.php

But with tips they can make alot of money for a young person living at home(I would bet most servers fit in this category).

With this new research, I will not be tipping as much as I used to. I made $3/hr when I started working. I normally tip 15-20% no matter what, but not anymore. Shitty to mediocre service, crappy tip, good service, good tip.

I have a friend who said she doesn't get paid much per hour. I forget the amount, but she does really well in tips most nights. It would also depend on where you work. Some restaurants would attract better tippers then others.

For me I don't care if they get paid well or not. If they give great service I till give them a great tip. It wouldn't really matter if they got paid $25 an hour. I don't buy drinks, I only get water. I don't like to see my glass empty for too long and I like to have napkins on my table. And I don't think its too much to ask to get service with a smile.

And why are people focusing on the $2/hr?.......When tips are included, you can make $40-50/hr at the right places.

You guys don't want to tip, then go someplace where you have to pick up your food at the counter.

And unfortunately, far too many give a [generous] tip because it is expected rather than as a reflection of service which prepetuates the cycle.

I never said it did. Tips are completely performance based. Do a crappy job get a crappy tip...do a really crappy job and get no tip. Do an exceptional job that really improves a customer's night and get 20% +.

My argument is that it is a great system that allows for quality servers who strive to do a good job and earn their money. When I'm throwing $40 + down for a meal for my wife and I the service is almost as important as the food, it needs to be stellar and I'm happy to tip well when it is.

When the service is bad it puts a real damper on everything else. If, as some are suggesting, we were to do away with the tip system and make servers salaried employees the level of service would go way down to the point that people (like myself) would just stop going out to eat.

Its not about, "Well if you don't like not getting tipped get a different job", that's complete bullshit. The world needs servers and the task they perform. Going out to eat, for me, is something to look forward to, something that brings joy and something fun...and that's not something to be pissed away because some people are too cheap to leave a tip because, "they don't agree with the system."

You would pay MORE for your meal after all was said and done without the tip system. At least this way someone is striving to really earn that cash. And if they don't....well they don't get it. Performance based systems are beautiful.

Am I speaking English?

Time after time on this forum people choose to read what they want to read. They choose to hear what they want to hear. And they'll beat that dead horse into the ground because they want to.

I feel like that kid in the freakout video and if I see a remote in the next 5 seconds I'm going to try and shove it up my ass.

Perhaps that's what you're trying to say, but a lot of people seem to be coming down on a couple of us because we believe that there is nothing wrong with leaving no tip, if the service doesn't warrant it. What you have just said in this latest response supports my opinion that leaving no tip is a valid response to bad, or completely lacking service.

Oh and as a complete aside....I cannot stand the 'welcome to the internet' comeback because it lacks both insight and creativity. A lowest common denominator comeback if there ever were one. I give certain forum members more credibility for their debating skills....so when one falters my faith in the system falters.

Yeah I made a comment about SOME places in Europe serving beer at room temperature because THEY DO WITH A CERTAIN TYPE OF BEER and I got a lesson in beer that I wasn't even looking for and didn't need.

The fact that room temperature when it comes to beer is WARM to me...well another lesson that I didn't need was given as to the true definition of warm.

I thought that we had one in Harper but he lost my support just 2 weeks into his first term, when he broke all of the promises that made me vote for him.

I would like to see John Tory run for Federal office, even if I don't agree with many of his stances. He's honest and speaks his mind, rather than hiding behind political double-talk. I don't know if you know this, but he's actually doing the afternoon drive on CFRB - Talk 1010 these days. Terrible radio personality; good politician.

College students arrested for not paying tip
By Peter Mucha

Inquirer Staff Writer

It was an evening out that college students Leslie Pope and John Wagner will long remember.
Not only did they get what they called lousy service, they got handcuffed and arrested.

All over a $16.35 tip.

They were with a half-dozen friends at the Lehigh Pub in Bethlehem last month, so the establishment tacked what it called a mandatory 18 percent gratuity onto the bill of about $73, according to reports.

Pope and Wagner refused to pay.

"You can't give us terrible, terrible service and expect a tip," said Pope, a 22-year-old Moravian College senior who's a Pottsville native, according to the Lehigh Valley Express-Times.

They had to find their own napkins and cutlery while their waitress caught a smoke, had to ask the bar for soda refills, and had to wait over an hour for salad and wings, they told NBC10.

The pub, which was very busy that night, took the $73, but then called the cops, who treated the matter as a theft.

The menu clearly states, "18 percent gratuity added to check of parties of 6 of more," and a similar message is printed on receipts, a pub employee said this morning.

A court date is scheduled for next month.

What would they do if it happened again? a reporter asked.

"Honestly, probably gonna pay the tip anyway," said Pope, prompting Wagner, 24, a Lehigh University grad student, to laugh.
