Under what conditions "if any" do you pass when you have a double yellow line?

If I can see a clear line, I'm passing.

If I have given the car a chance to pull over and they have not. I will pass on the double yellow if it is clear and not a major curve ahead. I also do not make overly rushed passes.

Cars here never pull over for bikes. Therefore we all have to be dicks back and be at 100 by the time we pass the driver's seat.

Lines painted on the road are not a factor in my choice of lines or passing maneuvers. My choices are based on the capabilities of myself, my vehicle, and intimate knowledge of my environment.

if I can see it's clear or if Louie tells me it's clear on the autocomm. I'm sure there's a wide group of people out there who had to replace their soiled driver's seat because I passed them on a blind curve without them knowing that I KNEW there was no oncoming traffic.

I rarely go over the double yellows in the canyons. I just use the cars lane or ride the line to pass. You only need 30 inches to clear. Passing between two oncoming opposing cars is also no problem as long as they are not towing anything.

as long as I can see, I go... but I'm much more cautious about that choice... and when I go... I GO.

Eh.......If it's a single lane each direction, I just cross the yellow......That way I dont' have to worry about pissing off his little ego because I split the lane right next to his window.

I treat the yellow lines as I do the advisory speed limits posted for corners. These are suggestions for automobiles. I calculate based on my experience the ability to make a safe pass and go for it. When in doubt, any at all, I wait for a better certain opportunity.

That's cheating.

But I like it.

That's when they target-fixate on you and steer right into you, lol

Never unless they are endangering me...I hate passing anyway so if I can do it when its legal, thats my preference.

Yeah, what she said.
On most of our good roads, it seems inevitable that you get stacked up behind slow-ass drivers.

Only when I have a good line of sight and I'm sure I can get by without startling the driver of the car I'm passing or a driver/rider that may suddenly appear coming the other direction.

I pass when I can, most times when legal but sometimes when it isn't. Most recently hubby passed someone on a curve and I about shit my pants watching him do it. I never expected that one from him, but hey whatever!

Well said.

I'm pretty choosy about when and where I pass, and yeah, the lines painted on the road aren't the biggest factor in my decision.

It is not illegal here to pass on a double solid.

I pass whenever I think I can make it.

If I am riding with others I will wait until we can all make it safely.

Double yellows don't mean shit to me unless I see a cop. If I waited behind all the slow drivers around here I might as well just put the bike up on a stand and pretend I'm going somewhere.

If you have to think about passing, its too late. Some fast dude told me that once.

If that's the criteria you go by, you probably pass more than all of us combined.

What are you a fucking washed up old man with way too curly hair trying to get is young fellas off your lawn?

actually they seem to go back and forth about following each other around... take the "lessons learned thread" for example

As soon as I see an opening, meaning if there is a good 1/4 mi before the next oncoming car, I'm there. I won't cut it too close.

I'll pass on a double yellow if it's clear and I know the area. Around my area I know most places where cops are known to hang. So outside my normal riding area I'll wait for a passing zone.

And I don't ever use both lanes when canyon riding. I don't need to get run the fuck over because I'm some hot shot who needs both lanes to ride. I'll stick between the yellow and white on that one.

If I've been behind a slower car/bike for a while and they don't seem to be turning anywhere or letting me by after a while and I see a clear line...I just go for it. :idk:

I don't make a habit of passing on a double yellow. That's why I don't go on many group runs if I don't really know the people because almost everytime someone in the group starts doing this and then it's on and you either do it or get left behind. I used to not have a big problem with this BUT I'm trying to be wiser in my old age.

As for the original topic question, if it's a residential area, no (too much of a chance of ending up in someone's door)... if it's very curvy, no (who the hell knows what kind of maniacs are on the other side )... on a straightaway with no side entries? Mayyyyyyyyyybe..... :D

That's me!

I will never forget the Gap this year though. A group of us were passing a Ford Contour and he gunned it to keep us from passing. :lmao: I am not sure you can really say 'gun it' when referring to a Contour but it was amusing to watch anyway!
