ATK, Hyosung to collaborate on bike range for Harley dealers
Who needs Buell when you have ATK/Hyosung? The tiny American dirt bike maker will partner with the Korean giant to produce a range of small-capacity street bikes that will be distributed at US Harley dealers. Discussing the announcement, ATK CEO Frank White said, "[Hyosung] will send parts from Korea, and we will integrate those with our own American and European parts. These American-Utah-assembled motorcycles will be targeted to be sold through a select group of Harley-Davidson dealers who are looking for a quality smaller-displacement motorcycle." The bikes will be sold under the ATK brand name.

So what does Harley think of all this? "The management at Harley-Davidson knows what we are doing with some of their dealers, said White. "However, they do not endorse our activities in any way." Surely the lack of objection counts as tacit approval or at least throwing ailing dealers a potentially profitable bone during hard times.

Why do I see myself never setting foot in a Harley dealer once my buell is gone?

They've basically lost a customer for life with me. And I know many others who feel the same.

If they become successful H-D will buy them up after promising to include them in the dealer network, then shut them down when they get more appeal than their beloved chrome beasts.
H-D? i dont need em...

Maybe they could do this to bring in more money.

"Due to a higher volume of sales of clothing, accessories and other harley paraphernalia, and coupled with tight financial times that put a further squeeze on overpriced, under performing machinery, Harley Davidson has partnered with Proptronics to produce a specialty motorcycle
called "Stylin Iron". Proptronics is the company famous for making fake appliances that are used in model homes for purposes of show only. In a brilliant management decision, Harley Davidson decided to face the fact that the only reason most people buy their equipment is indeed as fashion accessory. By building a prop motorcycle, costs can be dramatically cut.

The new "Stylin Iron" will have the look and feel of a real Harley motorcycle and comes equipped with a recorded potato-potato synthesizer, smoky air pump to simulate exhaust and an adjustable rate oil leak.

The bike is priced at under $1200 and will be available for the upcoming holiday season.
The "Stylin Iron" is expected to be a huge success allowing fashion conscious Harley consumers to spend even more of their hard earned cash on leather, hats, jeans, Tshirts sunglasses, jewelery , leather dog vests and glasses along with related other junk. Engineers who have tested the "Stylin Iron" claim it performs just as well on the road given a suitable downhill grade and tailwind."

The beast is choking on $1B of bad debt.

Once the Baby Boomers are gone, so is Harley.

The "Brubbrubbrub Bubble" will probably kill it before the Baby Boomers do.

Not too many people have ever heard of ATK except dirt bikers, so I doubt many people will be too trusting of this, especially when they Google it and find out most of the parts came from Korea

It's a global market. Very rarely is a vehicle, whether American, Japanese, or Korean produced, made of parts solely from that country.

60% of a Harley is made of non US produced parts. But you ask the die hard HD people about that, and they will tell you you are wrong.

Seriously, exactly how many parts on the Buell were made in the US? You guys are killing me!!! Like "oh no HD is going to sell a bike that isn't entirely made in the USA!":lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I don't think that is the point.

HD die hards rejected Buell because it was a "rice rocket" but don't recognize that a large chunk of their HDs are foreign sourced.

The move to source yet another bike with known foreign parts on the HD showroom floors to the same customers who rejected Buell is lunacy.

The really sad part is that Buell had a 450cc dirtbike ready for release but HD pulled the plug.

That same platform was slated for a 650cc single in both standard and supermono packages.

I'm ok with parts being sourced worldwide. I'd prefer final assembly in the US. That goes for Toyota, Honda, Suzuki, etc.

The same folks who will only buy 'Merican don't bother to check the labels of the "lifestyle" gear they blindly consume. They also don't seem to mind that their 'Merican car is made in Canada or Mexico.

I wonder if this is how those dealers are planning on keeping their Rider's Edge training programs going.
