View Full Version : Are you happy going to work?

We all have a different story.
Some of you have kickass jobs that you love. Some of you have jobs you hate but you do what you have to do to get by. And I suspect most of us have a mix of the two.
Do you go into work happy every day (to be going there...not in general).

Then I think of how much I get paid for how hard I work, I suck it up and make myself go.

I like my job 95% of the time.
I have a 5 mile commute to work. No complaints here.
Pay is adequate, enough to pay the bills and have some fun.
It's a good company and very stable. They treat their employees well.

Short answer: Yes
Long answer: I'm very good at what I do.....it's not what I'd choose to do, but it's what I'm cut out for.
I'd prefer to operating a big ass excavator, or custom fab'n a rock crawler frame or restoring old cars...but this is what I'm good at.
I'm happy to go to a JOB every day, and blessed to HAVE this job, so I suck it up and smile.

Lately I've found myself with very mixed feelings. I find it difficult to complain about my job when so many people don't have one and are having a hard time finding work. However, since you asked, I guess I'll sound like an ungrateful douche and speak my mind. I've been losing interest in my current position as I feel like I'm in a rut. I seem to fight the same battles week in, week out.....deal with the same issues week in, week out......do the same work week in, week out.....have the same discussions with the same people week in, week out..... Even though I've progressed this year in terms of visibility and responsibility, I don't see much in a future path in this role. I'm remote to my team, which is based down in Ft. Lauderdale; this has some challenges, in terms of remaining on the radar and having personal interraction with everyone. I don't see how I can really progress much in this situation.
It used to be easy to say "No thanks, I'm happy where I'm at" but I've recently had a few recruiters approach me about positions with other companies and I've been tempted to request an interview. I'm finding it difficult to see myself staying here if this is how it's always going to be in this position. I've toyed with the idea of some management positions in other groups - ones that are based here in this location, but those don't become available that frequently. I'm not sure what I'm going to do.
The fact that I have a good job right now keeps me going each day, even though I don't get much satisfaction from it any more. I don't take it for granted, that's certain. I'm grateful for it.

I gotta say I fall into the "grateful to have a job" category as well.
My current job is FAR less than what I am capable of, I work more hours than this place needs, I cant protect my employees (from management) like I should, I fear reprisal if I try looking for another job openly, etc etc. At the same time, I hate to think of abandoning my employees for another job and leaving them to deal with the aftermath.

I know what you mean. I'm certainly grateful for having this job. It is by no means bottom of the barrel. But it's not what I'm meant to do and is simply a stepping stone for me.
Teaching here is a game of who you know not what you know. A system I loathe so much that I won't even join it. I cannot fight the feelings of hatred and disappointment I have for that system and know I would spend a good portion of my time being upset about it. And while I say I choose to step out of it, the sad reality is that it was chosen for me. Our region didn't even hire 1 teacher this year. The only ones who got interviews were those who had Mommy or Daddy Principal call in a special favour. :(
But I also think it's never too late to re-invent yourself. I plan on doing it several times. I've come to realize I need a creative outlet in work and I just don't get it here. I'll fill that void with a part time gig until I am able to better utilize my teaching skills.

I hate sitting at a desk all day but it's the only thing I know how to do that will pay me this much. I do enjoy flying the flight simulator on a regular basis though.
For those that don't know, I design flight management and navigation equipment for commercial and military aircraft. I spend a lot of my time flying routes at my desk on an in house sim program similar to MS Flight Simulator. I also hate other engineers. :lol

Pretty much...I do have a decent job.
HOWEVER if money was not an issue then NO I wouldn't be driving in everyday to do this.
I need my job and I'm lucky to have one that I don't hate and is actually pretty cool at times but I wish I didn't have to work.
Hate the place I work at and the people I work for, but dont mind the job abd love the money.

In the ER it depends on the docs and nurses I work with. A good attending who leaves me alone makes the night go by quicker (about 70% of them) and if I have nurses who can actualy do work that makes it much better as well. We have 4 that arent worth the oxygen they breathe, a bunch that are adequate (in that they dont piss me off that much) about 6 or 7 that are quite good and about 4 that are superstars.
The construction site jobs are nice in that its relativeley easy/do nothing kind of stuff. And I get along great withthe safety/office staff at both sites. The commutes are kinda sucky but that fact I am getting paid well to do nothing for the most part is a WIN.

Funny this came up as I have been thinking about this ALOT on this deployment.
When I get back I have full time supply technician job with the guard waiting. It pays... ok... Benifits are nice, and hours/schedule are good (and regular). I don't mind this job. My brain works well with what I'm doing, but I don't really feel that it's where I should be, and really not sure if it's going to get me to where I should be either...
On the other hand, last fall I worked with a local famer. Pay was good (same as guard job, more hours) benifits were non-existant (except they paid for my meals). I REALLY enjoyed this work. Operating the equipment, seeing the fruits of my labor, and they trusted me and my judgement to let me make a lot of decisions and follow my advice on many occasions. Basically, they APPRECIATED me and the work I was doing for them.
Problem with this job is that the busy times are spring (planting) short break, mid summer (spraying), short break and then fall is super busy (harvest) well, those are the times that I want to be doing my hobbies (riding and hunting) and most of the time that is "off" I don't have a lot I'd rather be doing.
What I can't figure out is if I liked the farm so much because of the actual work, or more because of the appreciation I was shown. I have never before held a job where my supervisor actually showed me appreciation regularly.
The farmer wants me back... The entire time preparing for this deployment he kept trying to convince me to come back when I get home.
Big thing is, I just can't figure out if I really want to make this a "career". I do feel however that I could become a partner in their operation in a few years if I so desired....
So... it comes down to what's more important.
-Having a job that you love that takes time away from activities that you love.
OR
-Having a job that you can stand that allows you time for the activities that you love.
(both jobs cover the bills just fine)

The ONLY reason I work is so I can do the things I enjoy.
My Stepdad has been bugging me for years to come take over his business. He works sun-up to sun-down and then some 7 days a week. If that's what it takes to make his business run, I'm not so sure I want to do it . . . and I still keep refusing his offer.

My husband was farmed out to the VDQ...For the past 3 days he's been on the beach in Curaco and I've been with our 4 month old for 2 weeks. It's great that he earns the money he earns, but I know I work harder and longer on average and earn less.
For the next 8 months, my job is to raise our baby. Love it, wouldn't trade it for the world. Long hours. Crappy hours. Crappy pay and well...crap. Much like my real job in the ER except I get to snuggle and someone likes my silly songs.
My career as a nurse... I don't like going to work some days but don't mind it once I am there. Deal with far too many sad/scary things and get tired of being someone's perpetual and literal punching bag. Love most of the medical/clerical staff I work with....others make the day longer and more stressful than need be.
Could I imagine being anything else. Probably not. I am good a this. This is what I was ment to be.
People (Tommy excluded, aka, nurse hater!! :lol) don't laugh when they ask what I do. Most are appreciative and have a story to tell about another person like me that has helped them or their family. That or if I can give them a sponge bath....

I just started this job at the beginning of Sept., so I'm not sure if I like it or not. It's about 20% fieldwork, 80% paperwork. I think I'd love it if it were the other way round. Right now, the pay is ok, but gets better very fast, which will be nice. The work gets more difficult as the pay increases, though. It's been said that it takes 5 years to really get to the point of knowing what you're doing in this job.
But, I have a job in the city I want to have a job, because that's where my daughter lives. If I had a choice, I'd live someplace better, but I'm thankful to have a job that will eventually pay very well in a town with very few well-paying jobs. Plus, after my daughter grows up and leaves for school, I can go anywhere in the US that I want and still have the same job.

I have a love/hate relationship with my job. For some strange reason, I really do enjoy what I do. It's dirty, hard physical work often times, and I get cuts and scrapes all over my hands and arms, and can most definitely be frustrating, but for whatever odd reason, I like it. I guess because I get instant gratification, as I see the results of my work and knowledge behind it as soon as I'm finished with a job (although sometimes that plan backfires...oops!)
Other times I hate it, usually just when it's slow or I get a string of crap jobs. See I'm paid flat rate, which is commission basically. If there's no work and I'm sitting there with nothing to do, I'm not getting paid squat, yet I have to stay there for 8 hours (yes I've sat around nearly an entire day before, for 3 days straight, with nothing to do). Those are the times I hate it and swear I've gotta find something else. But I never do cuz then I get a few good jobs and I settle down and go back to liking it again, hahaha
My boss is great, co-workers are great, and I don't have to deal with customers. If there's one thing I absolutely cannot stand it's being micro-managed... somebody standing over my shoulder all the time telling me every little thing I'm doing wrong... that's like fingernails on a chalkboard for me. Not the case here... the boss trusts me (us) to do our job correctly and in full, so unless we run into a problem, he just leaves us alone and lets us work and doesn't hassle us about much of anything
Overall though, I really like it. After I got laid off last year I worked at a junkyard for a few months dismantling cars, and I absolutely HATED it. Boss was always up our ass, shoving more and more workload down our throats without any raise in pay, and on top of that it was just repetitive monkey work with no feeling of accomplishment whatsoever. And the pay was absolute crap for the amount of hard physical work we had to do. Did the exact same thing in the exact same order to every single vehicle. Pull it in, tear it apart, catalog the parts, haul it out, pull in the next one and repeat. That one I did dread going to work everyday. Like others have said though, I'm really glad just to have a job, not only knowing how many people are out of work and struggling, but having been one of them myself I totally know what it's like. That's why even when I get mad cuz there's no work when it's slow, I just remember that I do still have a job to come back to tomorrow. I go to work every morning with a smile just cuz I know there's always a new challenge awaiting me, not the same boring old crap. Plus I get to ride to work everyday, so that's always a plus :)
I'm a diesel technician for Ford, btw

As some of you know I am in the middle of no where Alaska right now. I am VERY lucky to have a job at a little bakery in a town of 800 people. Winter work in nill here and most people are happy collecting unemployment until summer rolls around and the jobs open up for a couple months. (Tourism based town)
I have a bachelors in Business Management and some days I really want to move to the town of Wasilla (Palin can see Russia from there) and put my degree to some use. However, I hate that town and the people in it. I love my small town and the quirkiness of the people in it. Will I be here forever? Probably not but I am enjoying this odd moment in my life.
I am considering going to the University of Alaska next winter to get certified as either a diesel mechanic or a welder. There are lots of construction jobs out here and I would enjoy working either of those fields despite the fact it means going back to school and not using the degree I already invested 4 years into.
Happiness first right?

I went to college and majored in Communications. I thought it would be fun to work in media. I originally wanted to be a sports anchor. I wanted to do something I would enjoy. I knew going in that the pay would SUCK...and it does. And I knew it would be tough to actually find a job. Comm is a cake walk through college and a lot of people major in Comm. So there are a ton of peeps looking for work.
I got a job in at a major market (top 50) TV station a month after I graduated as a tape editor for the morning show. Pay was 22k. SUCKED. Tought me a lot about the biz.
After a year a moved up to a Photojournalist slot. I loved it. I gave on being on air, I enjoyed working behind the camera much more than being in front. I won a few awards. Then the business got shitty. Lay offs, pay cuts, run and gun style of ENG. SUCKED DONKEY BALLS.
So I got out. Moved on to state government. I enjoy this work. It's boring at times, the subject matter sucks a lot. But for a TV gig it's as easy as it gets. Hardly ever a daily deadline. EXCELLENT government benefits. Pay is not great, but WAY better than news. 21% pay INCREASE when I took this job. A lot of days, like today, are spent cruising the internet. I dont dread going to work every day.
Cliff notes: Yes I'm happy going to work.

Probably a good thing that didn't work out for you. I've got a friend here in Tulsa who is a sports anchor and while he likes his job well enough, he absolutely hates the hours.
He rides, and really likes competing in trials events, but he HAS to be at the station to do the evening news. If we have a big, two-day event, he's screwed. He can get to most of the local events just fine, but he usually has to leave either immediately when it's finished or sometimes even before he gets to finish the event just so he can hightail it back to the station because he has to be on the air. You can tell he'd much rather be riding.

My Stepdad has been bugging me for years to come take over his business. He works sun-up to sun-down and then some 7 days a week. If that's what it takes to make his business run, I'm not so sure I want to do it . . . and I still keep refusing his offer.
There is the other prob. While both jobs pay the bills, the tech job would not allow a lot of "disposable" income to do the things I enjoy, so I would probably end up getting a second job to be able to have "fun" money.
Farming would give me some disposable income, but not as much time (that I want free) to be able to spend it.
Battle of 2 evils... just have to figure out which one is the lesser.

My Job...
Pros:
No day is the same, something ALWAYS comes up out of the blue so it's exciting and very challenging.
I love my staff. Despite some of their shortcomings, we all get along great and they are all tireless workers.
Stability... we aren't going anywhere.
I have a lot of responsibility.
Cons:
The money sucks. A couple of months ago I interviewed for a position in another company with a similar heirarchy. They started people 2-3 positions below where I am at $9k more per year than I make... without bonuses. With bonuses it closes that gap, but is STILL considerably more take home pay than in my current job, plus a ton less responsibility, and more room for advancement.
My boss sucks. He gets in my way more than he helps me. He rides me about communication and time/task management (both of which I am good, but not great with), but he's absolutely terrible with both. And... to make it worse, he calls me into his office for something small and retarded, but instead of just telling me I have to sit there while he makes 10 phone calls. Then 20 minutes later, he tells me something that would have taken 10 seconds... and then he bitches when I fall behind on my agenda (that he receives, ignores, and constantly interrupts with BS). He lies too.... oh, and he has terrible breath.
The job requires more than what's possible for the staff. I can cover all of my bases, but my staff is either 1) new 2) just inexperienced or 3) not capable of completing everything that I assign to them. Again, my staff is amazing, but I know going into every week that there's always going to be several things they are not going to be able to complete on a weekly basis. It sucks because I always am setting them up for failure. And, their pay sucks too... which is why some of the staff is new, inexperienced, etc.
I have a lot of responsibility. Pro and a Con. I like being in control of my own destiny, but the stress, long hours, and lack of compensation wear very thin on me. It's tough out in the job market right now, but even so I KNOW for a fact that I am over-worked and under paid. It's wearing thin on me.
So.... Do I like my job?
Less and less every day.

To add to what I posted earlier, I previously had a job that paid 2k less than my current job, salary-wise. With bonuses, I would typically make a bit more than I'm making now with my current salary. However, I get tax-free travel pay at my new job, anywhere from 200 to 500 a month, depends where all my cases are located. Anyway, the old job was 3 12 hour days, but with a 1.5 hour drive one way. Considering wake up, get ready and then wind down, go to bed time, I was looking at a 16-17 hour day on those 3 days.
But, the job was absolute cake. Had to deal with pissed off people from time to time, but compared to what I do now, I was probably getting paid more at the other job. On the flip side, the 3 day job was so painfully boring most days that I hated it. Thankfully, I had a great manager that tried to make work fun.
While I got more quality time with my daughter at the other job, I no social life because I worked Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Couldn't go out Friday night cause I had to get up before 5am to drive to work Saturday. By the time Sat night rolled around, I was already tired, especially knowing I had to get up before 5am Sunday. By the time Tuesday arrived, I was ready to sleep in till noon. I would pick my daughter up Tuesday afternoon and have her full time till Friday evening, which was nice, but left no real time for me.
Also, there was zero room for advancement at that job. Sure, I could have been a manager, but why? Managers were flat salary with little to no bonus. I could make more as a worker bee if I could put in just a little overtime and pull in a good bonus. But bonuses started drying up and the cost of gas was starting to eat me alive, even at 30 MPG. They would also put me on special teams, but those teams simply required more difficult work, with no extra pay. Thank you sir, may I have another.
All that being said, if I could have the same job, but with a 5 minute commute, I'd take it over this (as things are right now), but only because of the 3-day workweek. However, from what I understand, I can go "flexi-place" and "flexi-schedule" after I've been at this new job for a year. I may very well go to 4 10-hour days, Mon-Thurs. I think that would give me the best of both worlds as I get a lot of Monday holidays. Also, working from home would be SWEET. I wouldn't have to get dressed up to go into the office and could roll out of bed when I needed to and work when I needed to. We'll see how it all goes.

Pro of my job? Making as much money as 101lifts2 for being an "oil dipper" and having no student debt.

Lee said it best with having mixed feelings. Ever since Erik was let go last year I care less about going to work. I go because I need to. He doesn't work and one of us to be the insurance and stable income.
We are getting more policy changes from our parent company and the changes suck. More people are going to leave. It is a given. We are numbers instead of people anymore. Since our owner decided to get more greedy.
I'm in the automotive industry so if it tanks again, which wouldn't surprise me, more people will be let go.
I've very much looking forward to the 2 week shut down we have in a couple weeks. Then I can start the new year dreading that I have to wait an entire year for another 2 week shutdown.

I'd get out of there before the vampires show up and eat everyone. :tremble:
Think I would rather be up here when that happens! More space, fewer people. Thats means fewer possible victims which would then turn into zombies!

This is a weird question for me to answer. I very much enjoy what I do, if the only thing I had to do was what I got hired in the first place to do, fix airplanes. The rest of my job is annoying, especially how my career field is undermanned and I have to do so much extracurricular bs in order to fix jets. And doing every one else's job is annoying too.
In general I neither like nor dislike going to work, but that usually changes when I get there and take turn over, sometimes for the better, sometimes not.

yes.
of the 4 bars I've worked at, all 4 allowed moderate drinking while on duty.
Depending on what was going on that night decided when and how much we were allowed.

Wow.
The one new years I worked, there were 3 of us bartending, and 4 servers. We were not allowed to drink until midnight, but it was free game after that.
At midnight there were a bunch of people begging for shots, but at the 60 sec mark we quit serving and enjoyed it ourselves. We killed 3L of Jag in that last hour
Yeah... cleanup was interesting. I think I had to count my till about 5 times.
