Streets go North, South, Avenues go East, West. All have a SW, NW, SE,NE designation to tell you what side of downtown you are on. It isn't that difficult to figure out.

 That's not too far from here and I've only driven in that area a few times but it is pretty chopped up with many similar sounding road names.

We've got that here too - and then you have to make sure you've got St. vs. Ave. right - and Places are in there too. Very common urban planning. There are intersections of 1st st and 1st ave

No shit. I don't know how I'd make it around the metro if it wasn't for GPS.

Yup, that's how Jax Beach is, too. It's all North or South, or Ave or Street... took me a bit to catch on, but now it's easy.

Got to love the grid system.
Unfortunately, not all are created equal. It can vary from city to city.
Here, streets are E-W and Ave's are N-S.
Odd numbers are on the N & W side of the street. Evens on the S & E.

Not much different than new subdivisions that have streets named Mapletree Lane, Mapletree Drive, Mapletree Street, Mapletree Avenue, Mapletree Road, Mapletree Circle...did I leave any out?
Hickory is pretty easy, been there a lot with my wife.
