as per this thread. (http://www.twowheelfix.com/showpost.php?p=38182&postcount=3)

some of you may know i'm looking for a new bike. Bittersweet. Havent done this in a while.

I'm going to have between 5 and 6 k to drop on a new toy, i've been looking at this 929 so far.

http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/654/042908174401rw7.jpg
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/7898/042908174601zv7.jpg

he's asking 5k for it, which isnt bad considering its got a decent slip on (i'd sell)
nice fender eliminator, frame sliders, flushmounts, and is VERY CLEAN with only 8k miles.

It seems to have been maintained OKAY (theres really not TOO much you can fuck up in 8k miles), but nothing that would cause serious trouble down the road. runs good. but there are some kickers (there always are)

He is a retard. He fricking CUT the stock shift/brake levers shorter because he "only uses two fingers anyways" and he put the most ugly ridiculous grab bar on the back (looks like the spoiler from the car on joe dirt) by cutting two holes in the tail section and attatching it to the frame. so gay.

Other than this stupid shit the bike is so clean, cept for some stickers (im guessing they thought they added HP)

KBB is about 51XX, and i told him i would be thinking more around 4.7k. he said he was firm. i still like the bike.

still looking, but thoughts/opinions?

Stay away. That "grab bar" is a 12 oclock bar. Stunters use it to know if they come too far back when doing a wheelie.

So the bike has more then likely been wheelied alot. If i'm not mistaken the way the motor on the 929 is set up, repeated wheelies can starve the motor of oil and cause long term damage.

I could be wrong on that part as i'm not a stunter. But I remember it was either the 929 or 954 that had issues from repeated wheelies.

But the 929 has definatly been stunted. Plus 5k is high. If you really like the bike and it really looks like it's in good shape, offer him $4,500 firm. If not take your money elsewhere.

That's a 12 o'clock bar for stunting. Check the fork seals for leaks carefully.
The 929 is a strong motor with loads of torque.

Thats what i was thinking when i offered 4700 to test the waters... only thing is this guy did not strike me as a stunter of any sorts. good heads up though.

also found a 2004 gsxr 600 about an hour away for 5k. 21k miles, but he claims its been well maintained and its spotless. Imma go take a look this weekend.

yea the seals were one of the first things i went to look for. specially when he told me there was a 520 conversion on the bike. i would have walked away then and there if he had not said he still had the stock sprockets.

Rather attractive I think, you can always repair or replace the tail section, if its clean and you get it checked out and it comes back no issues it looks like a good buy...as for the cutting the levers, well, thats not that big a deal either, I have a few friends down here that do the same thing...I wouldnt do it, but to each his own...

you didnt say dude was a stunter, so I assume the 12 o clock bar is for poser purposes only, but again, get a good check up by someone who knows before buying...

Don't get over anxious... You can find a better deal than either one of those bikes if you have a little patience... PM OTB... he was offering his bike buying secrets to anyone who PM'ed him in another thread...

Go into any shop and start talking to the service guy... Then offer him a case of his favorite brew to come look at it with you...

What are you looking for so I can keep my eye out for good deals. Price range and such.

If I was you I'd decide on what(brand and size) bike I want and look for only that bike. Call arounf for insurance quotes too. The 600 is going to be a lot less to insure than the 929 and given your history, I think insurance is going to be a major factor in what bike you get.

NONE_too_SOFT
05-01-2008, 10:22 AM
already done. the 929 would be about 112 more/year so it'd come down to about 9 dollars more/month. I may end up moving my insurance in the near future though.

Looking at mainly 600s, FI, mainly looking for hondas (f4i's, early rr models) and suzukis, yamis and kaws have never felt as good underneath my butt.

want to stay in the 5k-6k price range, dont really want a project bike. want something i can put new tires on, chg the fluids, and start riding.

You should be able to find an awesome 03-06 600RR for that price range. Kyle got his track RR for under that and it has all the fork work done and a nice rear shock with all kinds of bonus extras. I will keep a look out for one.

Im not really finding much of anything like that around here.

I've been scouring craigslist everyday, as well as ebay motors, and cycle trader. any other venues?
Im trying to keep my search range w/in 100 miles of my location, but if somebody finds something more locally to them i wouldn't mind a road trip for a good deal.

Not sure what your plans are, but if you ever wanted to hit up the track, I'd stay away from litre bikes. You can have more than enough fun on a 600. I had a new found love for my bike when I hit the track.

im really leaning that way, for a multitude of reasons. track being one of them. I still plan on getting a track day in before indy. went and talked to a guy whom used to race at a repair shop a few days back (i work w/ his girlfriend). He said he could hook me up in a group that goes down to mid ohio all the time for about $200 / day if not less.

That bike has just been the first one i've gone to look at around here that was actually decent looking and worth a shit.

no prob. after im done there im gonna go look at an 01 r6. 8k miles. very clean. older, mature owner (from phone conversation)...

only thing is he's asking 5500 (has a micron high mount and flush signals, integrated rear signals)... KBB puts it at 4750 and NADA puts it even lower.

we'll see how this goes.

so i went to look at the r6. it was very clean. had mismatched tires. the guy was pretty laid back, he didnt seem to know shit about shit, said he just rode it as a commuter and what not. bike started good, looked good.

I asked what he was asking ( i already knew) and he says 5500. i say "well Kbb states retail is around 4800 at best". he says yea, he's aware of that, and he thinks the micron exaust, untertail, and flushies do the 5500 justice.

I flat out tell him i think the bike is worth 46-47 hundred, and put that on the table. He says 5k is the lowest he's willing to go. I politely agreed to disagree and told him i will check back in a week.

On the plus side, his girl was there the whole time, and i made sure to make an offer in front of her. Nothing is going to get a man to sell his bike faster than the scorn of a woman. also, he says he needs money for school, he just got married, whatever. He's 33 and in school, if i flashed 4500 in benjamins he prolly woulda taken it right there. either way imma let this one sit for a while.

Lamnidae
05-01-2008, 08:31 PM
Good call NtS. 'pecially calling out the offer there in front of the woman. Fair price I think in this circumstance.

Guess he doesn't understand most typically when you put those "extras" into the bike, they're just that at resale... "extras." Not something to really negotiate w/.

well good luck... as for the first bike... the 929 as others have said... that's a 12 O'clock bar... even if it's not scratched I wouldn't trust that it's not been abused... too many other good deals out there to even bother with that bike IMO.

The R6 looks good... as for his exhaust undertail and signals make'n the 700 diffrence... remind him they are not new and not worth their new price... maybe worth 300 together to add to the price. IMO

Good luck! but be patient... I know it's a pain in the ass when you wanna ride... but it'd suck to jump a little quick into something that is just gonna bite your ass later... ya know?

definatly see if you can get a local shop guy to come look at it with ya.

I would think the longer you have on the new bike before the rally the better off you will be. You don't want to still be adjusting to it when you are at the gap. I wouldn't think so at least.

got a couple good prospects to go look at later this week when i have cash in hand. First up, an 03cbr600 .11k miles. adult owner (has a full stable, making room) jardine exause, frame/swingarm sliders, ugly yellow windscreen. asking 5400

http://images.craigslist.org/01150701160101040320080502739161de5505fd878b00123d .jpg

next up an 05 R6, fender elim "aftermarket pipe" "new tires".also 11k miles. also said to be in excellent condition. Never dropped or wrecked. lein holder has title. This is a chick selling, said her and her boyfriend rode the thing. dont know how much i trust these two as compared to the other guy, but for 5500 its worth a look. heres a pic

2nd one may be a motivated seller, but i dont trust the seller as much as i would the first guy. The chick i talked to said she basically put it in her name for her degenerate boyfriend just so he could have a new toy... it really sounds shady, plus she said she will NOT go under 5500 for it.

The other seller has owned multiple bikes (cruisers and SBs), just sent me some high res pics of the honda, and i must say, it looks tempting. His asking price is also 200 bucks under KBB as is, so im not worried about having to haggle him down too far.

Sounds like a pretty safe bet on that one.... Don't think the bike would have been abused at all.

NtS... from what I heard they were better than the old Daytona 600's... the extra 50cc's helped alot in the reviews... but they still were heavy and weren't close to compete'n with the Japs... there's not much for aftermarket out there... (I looked into the Daytona 650 alot before buying my bike) I think they were only around a year maybe two before the 675 came out.

I've got at least 3 solid deals im going to consider this week, so i've quelled my searching a bit until i get deeper into the rabbitt hole with them.

I keep catching myself thinking about that 600rr, and i have to remind myself not to get too attatched. I Keep trying to convince myself if its exactly what i want, then its okay to splurge a little bit.

OUT DEMONS OUT.

Like i said, im really gettin the good vibes from this bike/owner. he's an older rider whom has another ride that is in equally good shape. Not looking forward to the 2 1/2 hour drive down there tomorrow, but i think it will be worth it. He's including the rear stand and a lid w/ the bike (not the shoei), so i if anybody needs a rear stand if you make it worth my while i'll ship it out to ya.

Sooo hard to concentrate on studying with all this excitement.
