View Full Version : ps3 blue ray not loading BDs ?

so this happened twice in a row.
i have seen probably 15 - 20 BDs on the PS3 at this point.
got one in last week, it would not load. cleaned the disk, (no knicks/ scratches), still nothing.
sent it back to netfliz - got a replacement. that one worked fine.
then next on the list was terminator: salvation. same deal, BD does not load. no icon in the system to select and play it.
sent it back, got a replacement - same deal. will not load. i did a system update, still nothing.
is system update the same as firmware update with these? any other ideas?

I have played 100+ Blu-rays on mine and never had a disk that wouldn't load. Some of them do take forever with the Blu-ray live crap though. Mine is an original and probably 2.5 years old.
Mine stopped reading Blu-Rays and I had to send it back for a warranty replacement / repair.

Why would it cost $100?
Isn't there a warranty?
Has it happened with any discs other than ones from NetFlix?

If it is one month old try returning it to the store where you bought it. Tell them this is the first time you tried to play Blu-rays in it and it doesn't work. Bring the movie with you. They may take it back as a manufacturing defect and give you a new one.
Even if you have to send it back to Sony I don't know why it would cost you $100. It should still be under warranty so I would think fixing it would be on Sony's dime.
Either way I would try to return it for a new one first. From my experience with a few different PS2 systems, you can fix laser issues but it is only temporary and will come back.

I'd go to Best Buy or Walmart and claim that you got it as a gift and that you only want to exchange it. With the new one, get the warranty and hold on to the receipt. I know we've had this fight before but 1 out of 100 PS3s break and ! out 100 XBox360s don't (or at least haven't yet).

I've been researching PS3 failures in consideration of buying and repairing a broken system for myself. I read several accounts of laser failure in the new slim model very similar to yours. Your best bet would have been to exchange it at the store, but since you are lacking a receipt call Sony's customer support. There is a chance they'll just send you a refurbished system, however maintenance should be free since you are under warranty.
Of course, if you are cunning you can just try to pull off what Tigger suggested.

yea i ma have to try that bit soon - i MIGHT have the receipt will check tonight.
i checked other BDs last night and they all worked no problem.
i am thinking it is not the laser but the firmware - i need to check on how to upgrade that.

Never had a bluray problem on the PS3.
BTW blurays don't scratch easily, so if there's one that won't play because of it, you're probably holding a disc that's broken in half.
AquaPython

no its not a scratch issue - the disk is flawless, it is a format issue

Do you have wireless internet at home? I can't remember how I connected mine to my wireless network, but I don't think it was too difficult. If you don't have wireless your system has a port in the back to connect a network cable. Once connected there is an option in the menus for doing a system update. It shouldn't be too difficult.

it is connected (wireless) and i did the update. i was asking if there was a difference between that and firmware updating , like on other hardware, it is quite different. but it seems like the updates software / firmware for the PS3 are one in the same.

Same. The firmware is updated. You probably got one that was rough handled on the loading dock. I used to work for Best Buy and I've seen shit thrown around, dropped, etc.

i dont think thats the case. it works fine with every other BD i have tried to date. if it is something wrong physically, nothing would work i would think.
you bought a 300$ gaming system, and threw out the receipt???
I lost the receipt for mine, but I contacted Gamestop corporate and they tracked down the sale. Also, if you bought it with American Express you can do the purchase protection thing, but Gamestop didn't take AmEx.

Some of the larger stores keep transaction records. It may be worth checking with the place you bought it rather than shelling out $100 for a machine that should still be under warranty.

Anyway, if you have a PS3, you should put away the BD's and download the MAG Beta! Its only up till tomorrow night, but goddamn! 256 person team based shooter. Graphics arent MW2, but a much, much better game. (though you have to get to a certain character level to play the 256 player matches, you start out doing 64's)

Best team based shooter ive played, but it takes a lot of getting used to, and you need to listen to squad commanders to get shit done.

i tried that game MAG - sorry, man. garbage.
on topic - i found the receipt, but walmart would not do shit. i was 10 days past the 90 day return policy, and i even gave them some christmas guilt, but did not work.
on the good side, because i found my receipt, i was able to get free service from Sony, so i will have a fixed PS3 in about 10 days hopefully.
but what is really gay is that they do not reset the warranty, even if they give me a brand new machine.
this makes my total game system services return count:
PS3 (owned 3 months)
1
return / month ratio : 33%
XB360 (Owned 3 years, 10 months)
4
return / month ratio : 8.7%

I thought it was 2 year, i could be wrong.
And I was lvl 21 when the beta ended last night, and its a much, much different game than it was at the start. Faster, harder, more to kill.
Thing is, its not just run and gun, you need to move as a squad to attack/defend. Snipers need to cover you, and the rapid assault guys should be leap frogging with cover fire, leading the way in. So if your team fails at getting to objectives and working together, it wont be much fun.
Dont get me wrong, im not saying the game is perfect, it has issues (one button to throw grenades while having a gun in your hand would be awesome!), but its much better than MW2, aside from the graphics.

I had a pc copy that may have been found online...
And dont get me wrong, I love MW2, but its hacked all to shit (probably moreso on PC), and its exactly what every other fps is. MAG is different, and it does it well. It has its flaws, but for a first attempt at 256 player maps, its very, very good.
And, noone is hosting the games, sony is using dedicated servers. And with 200+ people on screen with weapons, vehicles, etc etc, i've seen no lag at all.
What I cant understand however, is why they arent designing console shooters with mouse and keyboard in mind. Its just not right to have consoles that can use them, but shooters that dont!

Ya, its over. It was just server testing. Full game will be out the 26th.
Ya, it takes more than 30 minutes. And hey, maybe you wont like it at all. But once I got to lvl 7 or 8, I liked it a lot. Once I was lvl15 and could lead squads, I loved it.
