Some affiliates did move their news to 10 b/c Leno fucked up their ratings so bad. But news at 10 doesn't sell as good as news at 11. People want good TV at 10, not news and certainly not that talentless fuck Jay Leno.

FULL STATEMENT:
People of Earth:
In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.
Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.
But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.
Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.
So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.
There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.
Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.
Yours,
Conan

All the affiliates care about is ratings. They didn't like the Leno situation because his ratings sucked. Giving up 10pm to CBS and ABC isn't going to improve their ratings. Ultimately what the affiliates want is for NBC to produce shows people watch. This is something NBC has struggled with since "Friends" and "Seinfeld" went off the air.

Timeslot difference... The people who watch at 10 arent the same ones who watch late at night. It was foolish for them to think his audience would follow him to another timeslot. On top of that, conans ratings are a lot lower than Leno's was, so they'd be crazy to keep conan in the slot.

Leno didn't do very well in the ratings for the first few years either. At that time Letterman regularly beat Leno. It wasn't really until the Hugh Grant busted with a prostitute interview that Leno found his audience.

I don't think NBC gave Leno a choice. They obviously totally screwed the pooch with Letterman. NBC wanted to avoid that again by locking Conan down for The Tonight Show 5 or 6 years ago. To guarantee Conan would stay as well as show him they were serious NBC put a penalty clause in Conan's contract that if he didn't get The Tonight Show when he did NBC would pay him $20 million. They locked themselves in to forcing Leno out. Additionally I think Leno would have pulled a Favre for the next 10+ years if NBC didn't do something.

He could but I don't think he wants to. It doesn't matter how Conan handles it, at this point it is pretty much a foregone conclusion he is not keeping the show. All the other late night guys are piling on Leno. The message that Leno is shitty is already being dealt with by them. Leno's comment last night "You know, folks, if you don't get the ratings, they take you off the air." doesn't help his image either, especially considering Leno's ratings at 10pm. Additionally, the public will only accept only so much animosity from Conan when he is leaving with $30+ million in his pocket. The way he is handling it Conan is able to look like a gracious victim of NBC's shitty decisions rather than bitter and vindictive.

Conan isn't just sitting back, but so far he has confined his shots to NBC. There is very little fallout from attacking a faceless corporation that has a recent track record of mismanagement and a long track record of fucking up late night. If Conan goes personal and attacks Leno there is a much better chance of Conan losing public support.

Leno IS out of his contract. The minute they cancelled his 10pm show, which is done, NBC broke the contract. He has to sign a NEW deal to go back to 11:35. He could walk IF HE WANTED TO. Jay Leno is a fucking piece of garbage. He doesn't give a FUCK about anyone but HIMSELF...and quite frankly, he shouldn't. But he claims to be every man. A guy of the people, which HE IS NOT.

Personally I think Leno is handling it fine. H has asked to be let out of his contract and they won't. What is he suppose to do? He admitted his ratings sucked at 10pm. He said they would before it started with teh 10pm show. He admitted to getting fired from his 10pm slot. I think he put everything out there well. I believe he's a straight shooter on this stuff.
I took Leno's ratings comment to mean that what is happening to Conan shouldn't have come as a surprise since his ratings were poor. While that may be true it doesn't wash with what has happened with Leno himself.
Leno's ratings were poor for the first 3 years he had the Tonight Show. He kept his job and enjoyed the continued support of NBC. Leno's ratings were very poor for his 10pm show. He essentially received a promotion when NBC decided to move him back to 11:30pm.
I believe the primary reason the treatment of Leno and Conan has been so different is because Leno wasn't willing to leave. If Leno had "retired", similar to Carson, he wouldn't be sitting in the wings ready to snap the Tonight Show right back up.

I agree with the "far more people are getting screwed" comment. There are a lot of people who worked with Conan that will now be loosing their jobs. They aren't getting $30+ million for it either. If Conan does get paid to leave I suspect a condition of payment will be that he not work in late night for a number of years. Some of those who hitched their wagon to his star will not be working either.

From what I just heard on the radio, Conan has a staff of 200. They will each get about $225K each as part of the deal. Also since Will Ferrell was his first guest, he is scheduled to be his last.
IMO, he should go to Comedy Central right after the Daily Show and the Colbert Report. They should have some of that $ they were going to pay Chappelle left.

Comedy Central is notoriously cheap. Not everyone gets "Chappelle Money".

I have a DVR but I quickly figured out that taking an hour or two of late night TV and trying to cram it into daytime just doesnt really work for me. I barely have time to watch anything in the evening already. I usually have the DVR full of stuff then on a quite weekend I pick a few things to watch on it and delete the rest.

The cable company does here as well. Sometimes they "bundle" the cost in to the total package so it isn't always obvious. There are also sometimes charges for a second HD box. Here it is $5 per month for just HD, or $12 per month for an additional HD/DVR box.

I like how Conan is always portrayed as so much younger and hipper than Leno. What is he, only like 10 yrs younger? Big deal :idk:
Even so, NBC should have kept him, they don't know what the f they're doing, and the new show will bomb, just like the 10:00 did.
