Yes you can rip songs and put them on the device. Most of my songs have been ripped from CD's rather than downloaded (although I have a large portion of DL too).

Personally I like ipods the best but if cheap is what you're after....well I don't know the cost of the others.

One thing to consider is the battery. Ipods are so tiny and slim, very easy to use and carry. I used to have one ages ago that required an AAA battery and it was a pain in the butt.

Are there different types of Ipods or is an Ipod an Ipod?

I don't know how much they cost, anyway. Where is the best place to find them? eBay..?

You can go for a Nano, regular, Ipod touch, etc.

I have a Nano and it was a little over a hundred when i got it. Do you have an apple store near you? Or a Best buy?

hey triple. i'm right there with you on the phone thing. that's all mine does. anyway i have a 2 gb MP3, works just like an ipod. different brand name. very small has every song i wish to listen to on it and still has tons of room left. was well under a hundred bucks. loaded all the songs from cd, very easy to use. charges on the computer so no real batteries to worry about. a charge lasts all day.

got it at wally world made by Philips. it can store video and all that but i just use it for music.

I have an IPod already but what I really want to do is put music on my phone but I don't know how without paying for a download. It's an LG VX8360 with the music controls on the face. Will it work if I just have them on the Micro SD card or do they need to be on the phones internal memory?

I don't know what prices are like in the states, but up here a plain MP3 player cost about half of what the comparable apple device costs.

What do you call cheap? Cheap to one guy is expensive to the next. Most people that want cheap need to steer clear of the Ipods. Ipod has the Shuffle which has no buttons other then power on the unit. Everything else is on the headphones. If you break them you need headphones with the controls on it. That cost all most as much as a new one.

There is the Nano which has a screen and now does video.

Then you get into the Classic which is has the biggest drive.

Then you have the Touch which will do almost everything other then wipe your ass.

There are many other brands out there that a cheaper.

I have a Creative Zen which I like. Sansa Clips are small and cheap. And they have a clip on them which makes them great for the gym.

You can get an Ipod shuffle for $50 and that's tiny. You can plug it in to your stereo too, but it doesn't sound that great.

If you are giving it away, I'll take it. I've always wanted to tear one of those things apart and fuck with it. Never had a bad one to play with though.

I'm going to Buffalo next weekend so I"ll just ship from there.

I have an old 20 gig I'd probably ship to someone if they wanted it. Think the hard drive's fried, it won't boot (or whatever an Apple device does) just keeps trying to restore till the battery dies. It's like a 2nd gen I think, has a click wheel with the blue glowy screen.

I have had a few iPods and a cheap Sansa Fuze. The Sansa works as an mp3 player and its small but its almost impossible the organize your playlist the way you want to which is a pain.

I have Sansa 8gb.
Good sound but lack of playlist functionality (and a mediocre UI) really sucks.

I liked my Creative player better.
