Use a cross-platform video format like MPEG-4.

Needing something (preferably free) to take the AVI files on my computer and put them on a DVD that can be played in a regular DVD player.

You need a DVD authoring program.

The problem with that is that the .avi files on your computer are only the main feature and has been compressed down to probably 700MB. You would need some sort of dvd creator program to re-create menus and bullshit like that.

For DVD authoring, I use WinAVI Video Converter. It's not free, though.

It is not free. If you would like further details of how the software mentioned is not free (and in the case of DVDFab, mentioned software is illegal for use in the US due to DMCA\RIAA\MPAA\Senators for rent) contact me offline via PM.

Let me reiterate.
Neither software listed is free and one is illegal.

To the original poster. you should refrain from altering any files on your computer and instead pursue online services such as Netflix or AppleTV.

To do otherwise is to communism into the anus of puppies and feed said puppies to the homosexuals.

Don't care about the menus, all I really want/need is the main "feature"
Nero/DVD shrink used to be able to do that for me, but that computer crashed and I no longer have the program.

A puppy just had it intestine tickled by the fist of Stalin. It is unfortunate that the thrusting of the homosexual shall push Stalin deeper still.

What about Windows Movie Maker? It's built into XP. Vista/7 users forget about it. They point you toward some live download stuff that's a big piece of shit.

Dear lord if I had to choose between waiting 2 hours for Movie Maker to do its job vs 25 minutes for Nero to do
the
same
thing
I think I'd go with Nero.

but thats for DVD editing\burning (which is why I have dismissed it).
Didn't even think about basic file conversion.

good point

I use DVD Studio Pro 4 on Mac...but I have no idea if it converts files. I use Final Cut Pro to convert to various formats. But neither of those are free or terribly cheap.
