Consumer market - meh......too fucking pricey pointless and redundant. Only a primadonna tinkerbell like homeslice would rave about this.

Education market - Here kids. We iz gonna tell ur districts they need to divert all that dough they've been spending on useless PC's and laptops every year and buy this.
Ease of use - You little fuckers already spent your parents money on iPods and iPhones

did we mention that you can use it as an e-reader and that we've worked out deals with publishers, Verizon and ATT so that any books whether textbook or porno mag...will be streamed to your itablet whnever whereever you meed it. Schools could abandoned real books and simply subscribe to publishers. School gits access to ebooks and students show up with there little iTablets and download the semester to em.

Did we mention there is fricken camera. this way you little brats can do virtual classrooms.

All for the low low price of $1000. (Unless you get it with a Verizon or ATT contract...then it $800)

Very.

This summer, I couldn't tell ya how many macs I sold to 5th grader's parents. The elementary school that was part of the university said everyone in 5th grade or above needs to have a laptop to take to class with them, preferably a mac. Of course, these parents were paying twice my tuition for their kids elementary education per year. Some of them with 3+ kids going there.

How big is the tablet going to be? If it gets too big why not just get a netbook.

And that's the thing. If something forces you to carry it in a bag instead of a pocket, then it needs to have a keyboard IMO.

For any computer to be truly successful, any industry professional will tell you that it really needs to have, is what is known as a "killer app", that single-most-important application that would make you want to own it.

After reviewing the video on this unit at the Apple site, I can truly say that I have figured out exactly what the "killer app" for this device is:

The crapper. That's where I'd best be able to make use of this device. It is at best the device that would replace my crapper magazine/book.

If it could be used to control everything then maybe I could see a use for it, change the heat settings in my house, change my tv channel, tell me whats in the fridge, run a bath for me, and be my alarm clock. Then I can see a need for it. Until then I have a cell phone a laptop, and a desktop, I dont need anything else.

• Hardware tough enough to withstand leakage.

• Attention-getting aesthetics — sleek Winged Design™ will turn heads.

• Pets will love it...especially dogs.

• Stay-put adhesive — stick it in the palm of your hand and leave your other hand free!

• Convenient disposability keeps pipes unclogged.

• Customization: scented vs. unscented, light vs. heavy, pink vs. purple.

On the downside:

• Only the flimsy "teen" model will be small enough to conceal in your hand.

I'm not much of a fan of Apple but that ipad looks all right. I don't like the name. But I can't stop thinking about what its like to carry around my brothers itouch. I'm always worried about breaking the thing. If the pad is anything like the touch in the way it is built it would drive me crazy. I have seen customers come in with smashed screens on the touch and that would suck on that pad.

I'm also not to impressed with the hard drive size. They talk about how nice it would be to watch movies on that large screen and I'm sure they are right. But they should have had larger drives in it. It has the same size drives as the touch and I had many complain about the size of them.

Me too! We are working on getting our work orders sent to us digitally. If that happens, I'll probably get something like this. I could have it in it's notebook to set up my schedule and then just take the tablet part with me on the road. I'm betting with a little time, this thing will go for <$500.

I have a touch and don't worry about it too much. Sure, when I first got it I was conscious of it but I am no longer delicate with it and the screen doesn't have so much as a scratch. The polished metal back is scratched all to hell though.

I guess people watch movies on laptops, ipods, and eventually stuff like the ipad, but I don't really understand it. Larger TVs (40" and bigger) aren't really that expensive anymore. Why would I want to watch a movie on a 10" screen?

Yep! You can just about guarantee that I will have one! It looks like an almost perfect solution.A nice portable DVD-Rom and your ass in in business! Although, the I-Pad can be had for $500 for a 16G and $829 for a 3G 64G... but again with no usb port, memory card slot, no blue tooth, I'm wondering how you get media to the thing other than WiFi of course...

Its not scratches I'm worried about. You are right the back scratches real easy. People have put them in their pocket and sat down. They put just enough force on it to crack the screen. And the ones that were dropped the screen shatters.

Your not always home to watch your big screen so this allows you to watch a movie anywhere.

I plug my laptop into my TVs HDMI port to watch Naruto. If the tablet had HDMI out (HD quality) and more storage for video I would buy one and use it instead of the laptop. It would also be 10x better for manga and the usual type of message board surfing and IM-type chatting I do on the couch. Im glad Apple is in the game but Ill wait for iPad 2.0. Also, I refuse to pay for another data plan so I dont care if it has 3G. The user interface is great and looks very snappy, just needs more features.

Yeah, it's a bit stupid that I can't use my iPhone data plan to cover the pad as well (unless maybe that's coming, but I doubt it).

A message to the Internets regarding the iPad
“Everyone gets so much information all day long that they lose their common sense.” - Gertrude Stein

Oh Internets, how I love your unrealistic optimism, your pervasive cynicism, your willingness to believe any rumor, no matter how far fetched, and your desire to pronounce judgment on things with the tiniest amount of actual information.

Today Apple announced the iPad. Amazingly it did not fulfill every expectation that was floating out there. Most importantly, it does not fulfill every, specific desire you have and expected. The rumor machine of tech web sites promised you so much more.

Oh noes.

Let me explain it clearly and talk you off the ledge before you go and do something stupid.

Remember way back to January 2007, when the iPhone was announced? Oh Internets, you wailed and gnashed your teeth endlessly. No 3G network? No MMS? No apps on the iPhone? No replaceable battery? Oh, your complaints were endless. You were sure that the iPhone was doomed because it didn’t meet all your requirements.

And what happened? Well, Apple has sold 40 million iPhones. FORTY MILLION. They have become the largest mobile device company in the world.

So today, you moan on and on about all the features you expected and demand in the iPad. What no Verizon? No two-way camera? It’s not weightless? A full half inch thick? Only 10 hours of battery life? You make tons of predictions on the success and failure with scant details and without ever actually trying one.

Well, I am lucky enough to have been at the Apple Event today. Deep within the Reality Distortion Field. I saw the demo live, not snap shots on a web site. I got to use the iPad and see how it worked in person. I talked with other people that had tried it.

And you know what, just like Steve Jobs said, you need to hold it for yourself. It’s a different computing experience. It’s intuitive and simple. The device is blazingly fast and obvious how to use. It is a third kind of computing between a smartphone and a laptop.

For those that have iPhones, you know the experience of showing someone the iPhone for the first time. The look in their face, when they first flick the screen or squeeze the image to zoom. The realization that this is something different, very different, than what they have experienced before.

I am a technology professional. For almost 20 years I’ve tested, used, broke, fixed, and played with all kinds of technology from broadcasting to air conditioning to software. I am not easily swayed in these things. But even with all my skepticism, I think the iPad is something different. A new way of computing that will become commonplace.

Oh Internets, I know you won’t believe till you hold one in your hands. You’ll bang on about features, data plans, DRM, open source, and a multitude of issues. You’ll storm the message boards, wring your hands, and promise you won’t buy one till ‘Gen 2’. The din will grow and grow as time passes.

And then one day, in a few months, you will actually hold one and use it. And you will say, “I want one. Iwant one right now.”

So, my sweet beloved Internets, please take a deep breath, relax and stay away from your regular knee-jerk reactions. Have a little patience, a quality you are not known for, my sweet Internets.

And please, please stop trying to make predictions about what's next, you have no clue and just look stupid when you do.

“You can't just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they'll want something new.” - Steve Jobs

I was about to say something similar, which coming from me is saying something.

I mean really, what is so radical about this device? Where is the facial recognition technology, to automatically switch settings for different users? Where is the eye tracking technology? If you are going to claim "radical change in the way people use computer" then you need to step up and deliver some hardcore sci-fi shit.

From a functional standpoint there is no real reason to buy this thing over a $350.00 netbook that can store more, does more, has more connection and peripheral options, and JUST PLAIN WORKS.

All the iPad has going for it is hipster cool factor, so I know that I'll soon be setting up a dozen of them at work.

I actually have been giving this thing a bunch of thought, I've been considering buying a netbook as a replacement for my 17" laptop (yeh I thought it would be portable). I think this might do the trick for me, but I'm not really sure. I like apple products, though I'm not a super fan, I own a 5th gen Ipod, and old shuffle.

Here is my problem. Conectivity. I travel alot, and thats really what I want it for, and probably half of the hotels I visit dont have in room wireless, instead they run a cat line. Will I have to start carrying a wireless router? Any netbook or laptop i would consider buying would have to have wired conectivity. It seems like s good idea, but the more i think about it, I am liking HP's or the notion ink slates. The notion ink version already sounds more appealing because of it's OS, Android.

The Dell mini and the archos 7 both run android. In fact if the Archos 9 ran android I might consider buying it now, I just don't see windows being a good touch based OS.

As it stands now I think I will wait and see how it all pans out after each device is released

Are you just saying you don't want to pay for a data plan, or that you don't think it would work in hotels? I haven't had any problem with my Sprint card in hotel rooms, seeing as how all of them have a window and can therefore get reception.

Yeh i probably wouldnt get the data plan. I'm not saying definately no, but I would rather pay for a data plan on my phone than on a tablet. the tablet is something to use at the end of the day in my hotel room. Plus 3g is really to slow for my tastes for casual web browsing, I just have never been impressed by it.

I ran into the same problem with wireless connectivity with my iPhone overseas, before I got an international data plan. I've pondered picking up an airport express since it's pretty tiny for a wireless router, and works as an iPod/iPhone charger too.

From what I hear, the iPhone/iPad will never support Flash, so I wouldn't hold my breath for that.

No, but I think the iPhone OS restricts applications to a dedicated "sandbox", where they can't ever breach the system. I can only imagine that Flash requires more direct hooks to hardware (namely video) in order to work.

good think only sites that are barely accessed use flash. Like cnn.com, youtube.com, xnxx.com etc.

Flash is on its way out. HTML 5 is going to replace Flash for online media. You Tube is already switching over to HTML 5 and the Safari/Webkit browser supports it.

This is just like when Apple stopped shipping computers with floppy drives, everybody got all up in arms complaining about having a handicapped system when in reality it was just Apple knowing when to eliminate dead technology before everyone else.

It is double the cost of the most basic ipad ($500). It is less than $200 more than the ipad that comes closest to it in functionality ($830). Even that top line ipad is severely lacking compared to this Lenovo. The name thing might hurt them, but I think that is more of a problem with the casual buyer. I don't think it will bother the tech savvy consumer most likely to initially purchase a device like this.

True, but I think that matters less for a product in this price range. The casual consumer is priced out initially. On the lower end it is significant and Apple dominates the MP3 market and does very well in the smartphone market. It also helps that the Apple products in those markets are functionally competitive and competitively priced when compared to other manufacturers. At least based off initial reviews the ipad may be lacking in at least one of those areas, if not both.

I dont know f youre being sarcastic but thats actually part of Apple's plan. Their goal is to take the computer and make it as easy and intuitive to use as an appliance. Oh I'm not making a case for the thing or anything.... I'm just saying that almost all of the problems I keep hearing about can be solved through WiFi or blue tooth. As far as the stand goes, it might come with that or be built in somehow. It wouldn't be hard to develop something that snapped on the back of it. You could make a keyboard the size of a typical cell phone and build a trackball into it. FWIW no one is trying to sell this thing as a computer/notebook/netbook...it's an over sized iPod Touch nothing more, nothing less.
