Do any of you guys know anything about Konig wheels? Apparently my OEM wheels on my Maxima need replacing. The paint/clear coat is flaking off around the tire bead and the bead is not seating properly so air is slowly leaking out. The guy at the shop recommended some Konig Zero In wheels. I know these are pretty inexpensive wheels but remember this is a 13yo car so I don't want to spend a lot of money on wheels. Just wondering what you car guys think.

They are part of Icon Helmet'ss "rimz" line.

(In other words...no idea...but if i were you...don't get em wet and don't feed tham after midnight)

I would price-check on Tire Rack though.

Also make sure the "offset" measurement is close to yours, otherwise they will stick out or stick in too much.

Yes they are pitting too.

They've been one of the biggest brands for years. Nothing wrong with them.

I would price-check on Tire Rack though.

Also make sure the "offset" measurement is close to yours, otherwise they will stick out or stick in too much.

How can I tell what the OEM offset is?

Offset is usually stamped on the wheel, it'll say something like "35mm" or "50mm"

If not, just call Tirerack they can look it up.

I've had that problem before. My old Probe had the factory chrome rims and at the ten year mark one of the rims would no longer seal. I had it fixed. At the the 13 year mark another rim started to leak.

It got to the point where I'd drop about 5psi a day

I haven't measured the pressure before filling it. I'll just notice it's visibly low and fill it to 35psi. Today the pressure was way down to like 10psi so I took it to discount tire where I bought the tire to have them check for a nail. No punctures anywhere. So 25 psi over probably 2 weeks is a lot. The service tech showed me how the clear coat was just flaking off badly. 13 years in the salt belt isn't a bad lifespan for rims.

I would have them wire brush it and hit it with bead sealer. Should stop the leak. It will make it a bitch to break the bead when it is time for new tires, but that really isn't your problem is it?

I had a set on my Prelude for a few years. They were pretty nice. Easy to get center caps for also because they're a pretty common brand.

The lower the offset, the more the rims will stick out. If you want them to stick out a bit more, you could safely drop it to like 35-36mm.

I don't want them to stick out. The OEM look is fine with me. I looking for some used 18'' Inifiti rims now.

1995 Probe GT factory chrome wheels.
I bought it second hand in 1999 from a dealer.

I say their decent and can't be hard to refinish or replace since every Discount Tire, NTB and low-budget tire dealer around here stocks them.

Do a search on wheel weights first.......One model of wheel might be 10 lbs heavier than another even though they look similar

I think these wheels are 18lbs. Lighter than OEM that's for sure.

Yeah but I go for several days without my car. At least not in the winter. When spring comes around and I am riding the bike them maybe. Besides I can sell the OEM rims of the Maxima board for probably $200 for the set. That will offset the cost of these new rims. Remember, this car is going to be my son's car in less than 3 years. I'm not spending mad money on it nor am I going to spend much time on labor to refinish the OEM rims. If my son want's the OEM rims, I'll keep them and let him refinish them. I have better things to do with my time.

The chrome rims on the Oldsmobile I had started peeling and they would drop air way to fast. Killed a set of front tires. I replaced mine with Konig because it was cheaper then trying to get the OEM rims chromed again.

So is it just chrome that has a problem? I guess chrome flakes are thicker than paint flakes? Because I haven't heard of anybody with regular-painted wheels who experienced this problem.

The guy at the shop said it was a common occurrence in MI. Oh and I found out the OEM wheels are 6.5" wide and these Konigs are 7". Does that matter?

Much thicker. On mine it was hard to rip off. It is thicker than paper and stiff. They tried to clean mine and then seal them but it didn't help. When I wreaked two good tires I had enough.

Powdercoating would last longer than paint, from what I heard. But, it doesn't look as good as a decent paint/clearcoat job.

means you can put a wider tire on there if you want.

shouldn't cause an issue with your current tires unless they are on the narrow end of what fits on a 6.5" rim.

Then the only thing that'll happen is that the new rims will stick out 0.25" more (not 0.5").

What tire size do you plan on using? I would go either 215 or 225........That's as wide as you should go on 7" rims, otherwise you get too much sidewall bulge & flex.

Both are 40mm offset. OEM tire size is 215/55-16

Me personally, I would switch to a 225/50, it would give you 10mm more tire width, and it would lower the car by about 6mm (not a noticeable difference), and stiffen the sidwall a bit (since lower-profile tires are stiffer). Plus it's a more common size, so you would have more tire choices.

That's what I was thinking.

Over on the Maxima board I found a set of brand new 235/45-18 for cheap($400 OBO) I don't even know if 235's on OEM offset would fit in my wheel well. That would look sweet though.

I like to use tirerack's website to see whether a certain wheel/tire combination will fit, because they've already test-fitted everything and know whether it will work. When you enter your make and model, they only list stuff that will fit. Also they will include hub-centric rings with your purchase, to fill in the gap between your hub and the new wheels.

A trick (if the wheel is not pitted) is to remove the wheel and use motor oil as a sealant. Works great.

That sticky goop shit that the tire places use works great as well. But, the tire shop should have submerged the thing in water.

Paid for the wheels last Friday, and they had to have them shipped over from Detroit so they should go on tomorrow or Friday. These Konigs were $505 OTD so I figur if I clean up the OEM rims and refinish them I should be able to make most of that money back up. The OEM wheels are $500 new each. My wheels have no cube rash at all so a little clean up and a fresh clear coat and I should be able to sell them on the Maxima board for at least $400 for the set.

I haven't had a chance to open it up as the shop is only a few miles from work. I did notice though at moderate acceleration the RPM wound out a little quicker. Braking I didn't pay much attention. I'll take note on the drive home.

I'm still on the 215/55 since the tires were still good. On the next set of tires I'll got 225/50. Also since the tires are non directional, I think they put a couple of the tires back on turned around so the old non armor-all'd side is facing out now. I'll have to fix that when i get home and treat it with some armor-all.

I can't, I found out it's actually painted on. Oh and steering response is much quicker. Accelerates a little quicker but I haven't noticed a difference in braking. I already had awesome brakes on it. Brembo rotors with Hawk HPS pads.
