Well, its not much... but a few things I have been collecting to do to the bikes.

For the ultra:
Hogtunes Tweater Pods, luggauge roll for my air wing rack, 2 half helmet headsets, 2 HID kits, lots of wiring upgrades, grab on grip covers, K&N air filter, security siren, security pager, SG mirrors.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX009.jpg

Then the Nightster:
Derby, timing, and front axle cover, and blinker relocation kit
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX011.jpg

Haven't got to the nightster yet...

Installed the replacement K&N air filter.

I decided to top off the sounds with the Hogtunes Tweater pod. Suppose to GREATLY increase your sound. See why HERE (http://www.hogtunes.com/techzone_files/Why_HF-1_Works.pdf)

They come with 2 sets of grills...

These:
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX001.jpg

But I want to make them match my stock speaker location covers.

Simply remove them
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX002.jpg

Install the 2nd set of covers that they provide.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX004.jpg

Using their template and its BEYOND easy! Drill the 2 holes
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX034.jpg

One for the wire and one for the mounting screws

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX036.jpg

Wire them in with the provided Y-connectors
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX038.jpg

Can't wait to try em out on the road.

Swappin out the Ultra mirrors for the cleaner look of the SG mirrors.

Old:

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX015.jpg

With the provided template it really was easy. used a paint marker to help set it up... then bust out the drill... AGAIN. YIKES!

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX043.jpg

Then simply thread on the nut... DONE!
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX052.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX051.jpg

Installed the HD security II system

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX033.jpg

Really don't get any easier than that. Tnx HD. Now the bike will siren when its disturbed and page me.

Now on-ward to more frustrating things... The HID install.
a 8K 55W H4 hi/lo headlight bulb
a set of 6k 35W 880 spot light bulbs

Pull the outer fairing
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX016.jpg

Pull the stock H4 out
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX018.jpg

The hi/lo H4 HID bulb
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX019.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX020.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX021.jpg

Remove the tip cover cause my headlamp already has one
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX022.jpg

Modify the stock hd rubber boot slightly... but HID bulb installed
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX023.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX025.jpg

Putting the stock bulb in this case the HID came in as on "on road" repair for "just in case".

Well looking at the number of battery powers I need in the fairing... 1 for the hogtunes amp, 1 for the headlight, 2 for the spot lights. I decided I would make a mod. Run some car stereo 8 gauge power wire from the battery to the front fairing. Then a 4 spot fusable power distribution block. This will be supplemental (read: overkill) to the inline fuses for each item.

To get this power block, 3 ballasts, and a hi/lo converter in the fairing. We don't want them bouncing around. Brackets are needed!

Some flat sheet metal around the garage... made some cardboard templates and poof.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX044.jpg

Some spray paint for anti-corrosion
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX045.jpg

Mount the hi/low converter on the back (this is for the headlight)
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX048.jpg

Power block on the front

This is about when I ran into problems...when I purchased the HID kit, the company said the 880 bulbs would fit in my 881 holes. Lets see how that goes...

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX031.jpg

Oh no Scooby... the new one is a bit longer.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX030.jpg

When I try to install into the spot lamp, its about 1/8" too long. It hits the inside of the lens before I can spin/lock the bulb into place.

I have placed a few calls and an email into the company to see how we continue from here. I will still have to work around how to wire them into the spot housing. But can't worry about that right now...

Stay tuned...

Good stuff there, looks like enough to keep ya busy for a while.

my fun starts next month

my ohlins 25mm cartiges just shipped yesterday. Sending them to a buddys house since hes going to do the swap for me, but am on my own installing the rear shock. karen ordered my race plastics from optimal so hopefully they arrive next week and can get them out to be painted.

for the priller I can finaly by the new voltage regulator and swap that out, replace the left hand rearset that I broke on last years getoff on the skyway. take my soon to be newfound knowledge on forks and replace the front springs and pick up a new rear shock. Prolly either a penske or a wilbers.

Sadly due to time and money constraints the buell wont be getting any love this winter, just dont tell marko

Joker... yeah they make some good stuff.

Update:

No way I give up that easy on HID. Remember I know the routine... custom don't bolt on.

I seem to get decent response time with emails.

My complaignt. I asked them before I purchased anything. To ensure these 880 bulbs would fit my HD passing lamps. But now that they don't, they won't exchange them for a different bulb so that I can use it in a different lamp/lens. GHEY!

However, at least replacement bulbs are only $15. Maybe they'll cut me a break on S&H.

I have found others that have done HIDs in aftermarket lenses. The aftermarkets, Adjure brand ($80), uses a H3 bulb not a 880/881. The HID company tells me the H3 bulb is 1.5" from base to tip. I measured the 880 at 1.85" The stock HD lens interior depth to coincide with the base tip length is 1.75". That is the 0.10" shortness that the 880 hid won't fit. If the aftermarket lens carriers the same interior depth the H3 (1.5") will fit no problems!!

Waiting to hear back from Adjure to get more info on their lens depth.

My brother in law wants to hack the stock HD lens. However, I think I would rather buy a new lens, perhaps sell the stock lens to recoup costs. Versus hacking it, possibly not working and still being out $80 for new lenses.

Well finally spoke to somebody. Then foind out this guy only been there for 2 days. Got his super. He ok'ed the exchange. Found out new guy wasn't giving it cause I was at 40 days past purchase and they have a 30 day policy. He over rode tt. Simply told them it was from xmas and I simply just got to it. Reminded him its 10* out here not 70* and sunny like cali!

So he sent me a rma and I will be swappin them for the H3 bulbs.

Now I just need to order the proper adjure lamp and it will all go together.

Also found out u can't cut or splice the wires to the bulb. NO WAY. NO HOW! So the chrome bucket is gg to need "modification".

Here's a pic of the backside mounting hardware for the mirror
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX056.jpg

Being I have to wait for a bulb swap I want to put some of it back together...

Put the clear cover on the power block
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX082.jpg

Double sided tape it to the top of the radio. Fit perfectly under the Hogtunes amp
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/WinterMods2KX083.jpg

For now, till I wire in the TDR, I just plugged it straight in on the stock wiring

As before here are the things I got for the wife's bike

but now the chain cover looks out of place. A simple black cover from the dealer from a sportster R model. Fits nicer

After re-routing the wiring, mount the new stalks to the lower tripple and a much nicer look.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/WinterMods2KX076.jpg

I just didn't care for the flipped stock version. This looks more "normal" to me.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/WinterMods2KX080.jpg

Picked up a set of FLH lower nylon covers. With a little modification they will work.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/WinterMods2KX090.jpg

This is how they are now. There is too much material. The FLH is simply wider than the sporty.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/WinterMods2KX093.jpg

A simply fold and stich will do the trick. So I folded it now and pinned it. Will get my sister to stitch.

Well if you look closely... its standing straight up. So no... no fluid came out. If you don't have a way to stand it up right, have somebody hold it. Otherwise you will loose some fluid.

Also, pay attention to your model bike when ordering. For example. My ultra stock derby cover has an o-ring in it. The willie g skull does not, so there is now a gasket cover that goes in there. Should say right in your bike's listing for the derby cover you want.

Working more on the HIDs

Got my replacement spot lenses by Adjure... this allows me to run an H3 bulb instead of the too long 880 bulbs required by the HD lenses.

I ordered a set of Time Delay Relays from Wolsentech so that none of the HID's fire up till X amount of time I set. I set for about 30 seconds. This helps the bike battery. 1 for the headlight (Hi & Low) and 1 for the spots. This really makes the wiring harder

What is this 'it' you are refering to? Is 'it' a fruit or a vegitable? Please post a picture of which 'it' I should be watching. If 'it' is supposed to be leaking oil yours is seriously lacking in the harley tradition department, you should fix 't' until 'it' is good and broken

Are all those wires stuff that you added? You might wanna clean that up and maybe build it into an actual wire harness. It shouldn't be hard to make into one loom that wraps around one side of the fairing and connects everything. I would just be scared with that many wires hanging around that one would wear through over time and possibly spark or even worse catch fire.

That being said, in't it great to have a cig lighter outlet on the bike. i've been thinking of adding a 2nd one in my trunk.

Gas Man
03-03-2010, 10:15 PM
No I didn't add all that... its some stock, some hogtunes, some hid, some windshield trim lights...

derf
03-03-2010, 10:21 PM
I'm surprised that any shop or HD themselfs would be that careless with wires. Is there any way that you can clean it up at all?

Gas Man
03-03-2010, 10:30 PM
I did some after that pic. Some of the things were rubbing so I have to move a few things... Well the problem is so many wires need to go in so many different ways.... Its really more layered than the pic looks.

derf
03-03-2010, 11:13 PM
Yeh i see what looks to be 5 sets of wire installs? If that was me, I would start by buying a bunch of different color wires, wire loom plastic and some better than radio shack quality connectors, and just build the wire harness one wire at a time from scratch.

Anyway I would try and route it like this one main harness with a few legs comming off the main one:

http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/7508/gasharness.jpg

If you build it from scratch yourself you can make the wires all length to fit, wrap everything in black plastic wire loom and it would look like a proffessional install. Again the mods themselfs are cool, just the insides need some staightening.

What I failed to post a month ago

Well I thought I was done but decided to add a few more items to the wife's bike.

Custom Dynamics Street Magic LEDs (http://www.customdynamics.com/harley_turn_signal_retro.htm) in the tail lights and front blinkers.

The Nightster comes stock with red lenses.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/Mods027.jpg

Last year I changed them out for smoked out and couldn't find red 1157 bulbs locally. Tried some reds off ebay and they sucked, so ended up with the red "socks" over bulb.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/LEDs005.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/LEDs003a.jpg

They function ok but look like poo

So lets make the change. Now with these newer electronics you have to put in a load equalizer, due to the less draw that the LED lights pull. So a trust worthy version is BadLands (http://www.badlandsmotorcycleproducts.com/). More specifically the 3rd version specifically for the XL.

So here's what we have to install
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/LEDs001.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/LEDs009.jpg

Pull the seat and locate this harness plug
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/LEDs008.jpg

Unplug and run the equalizer inline
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/LEDs010.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/LEDs011.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/LEDs012.jpg

Tuck in and push wires back into place
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/LEDs013.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/LEDs014.jpg

Pop the lens off with a flat screwdriver
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/LEDs015.jpg

Pull the bulb out
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/LEDs016.jpg

Plug in and twist into place with a screwdriver, just as you would with the bulb
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/LEDs017.jpg

Turn the LED board to spool the wire to allow the board to fit, use the lens to hold them in place. Takes 2 hands.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/LEDs019.jpg

BAM
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/LEDs021a.jpg

Repeat on other tail light.

The fronts also came with the orange lenses, that I replaced with smoked and orange bulbs

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Nightster/Mods026.jpg

These looked fine and worked good. However, if you do the rear, got to do the front to keep up the look.

In goes the LED

With these Eclipse versions for the fronts. Instead of going from level 1 brightness and blink brighter.. these actually turn off and back on instead. They say this makes them more visible. To avoid the "left hand turner in front of you".
