anyone watch the kentucky derby? so sad. :( almost makes horse racing appear barbaric. they were just relating it to such things as animal fighting on the today show. i still find it hard to believe that with today's technology they can't fix a horse's ankle or leg. it just blows my mind that they hafta be put down from an injury like that.

Anyone who compares horse racing to dog fighting is a fucking moron

itgirl
05-05-2008, 09:25 AM
well, not totally. i don't think so. they are both abusive to animals, just in different ways.

in dog fighting one of the dogs is killed. here a horse lost it's life for what? 2nd place in a race? not a good reason. if you ask me.

It's the circle of life... Horse races, horse loses, horse gets killed and made into dog food... dog eats it, dog fights, dog loses and dies... Well... maybe not a complete circle...

Ooo... Hold on... my chicken in burning...

These horses are treated better than most kids in this country. Yes, it is an unfortunate accident, but something like this rarely happens. A dog is killed in every dog fight. Not to mention the torture they endure to "train" for the fight.

Horses are born to run. Many more die on the farm in "regular" surroundings (i.e. step in a hole, etc) than on the racetrack.

So... to compare the two "sports" is still fucking moronic

Ok, so I just read up on this... apparently the horse broke BOTH front ankles... One could have been fixed, two... not so much. She would have nothing to stand on to support her weight if they tried to cast her up... And the only way to get a horse to lay down for 6 weeks is to strap that bitch down...

.45 to the melon... the only way to go.

you sound just like the fella they interviewed on the today show. almost repeated his words verbatim. i am no animal rights activist or anything. hell, i watched the race for entertainment purposes. i can just see where they are coming from though. maybe the connection between dogfighting and horse racing is a bit severe, but i can see where it could be cruel in both cases. but will i stop watching the ponies run? nope. :)

as somewhat of an equestrian myself, i can say without a doubt that that horse deserved to die for breaking its fucking ankle. you know how much money get put into those things? blow that shit up with a stick of dynamite and start training the next bread winner.

i like to ride horses, but i like to kill them after they break their legs even better.

While I find it sad that they cant fix the horses ankle, you have to remember that those horses are bred for racing. These are not pets in any way. Once they are injured they are useless. Even if the injury was repairable, it's not like you could use the horse for anything. It could never run again, it could never pull a heavy load. So what are you going to do with it? You cant ride it? A race horse is not like a dog. A horse is not a companion... mans best friend. Are you going to site there and watch the horse be miserable laying around all day. They are bred to run.. thats it. When their days of running are over it's the end of the line for them. I hate that the horse had to die but you cant let it live like that.

agreed.

Look, the horse didn't get put down "because it lost." It had an injury, TWO major injuries..... It was the humane thing to do....

One broken ankle? sure... patch him up, put him out on the farm for a family to adopt or something, the horse would never race professionally again.... two??? nah, I'm sorry, but it had to be done.

It's a shame but in the end it was more humane to put the animal down. Did I hear right that 8 Belles is only the third filly to run in the derby? That's impressive.

Also, for a comparison, the bones that make up the ankle of a horse are actually smaller in total size than the bones which make up a human ankle. Their ankles are their weakest point.

Quiet true. My mare got kicked my her filly and it was enough to break her hip. We had to put her down. These horses are conditioned to be in that atmosphere, so they are strong. HOrses that are just out in the pasture aren't conditioned so lots of time they can't even heal from barb-wire cuts.... Granted when a conditioned horses get's hurt it's a severe hurt too. But it's not different then us running a 2 mile, we could fall and break our ankle and depending on the severity......
It is truly sad though. I grew up riding, I also raced in barrels, pole bending and different fast paced riding. So I have seen it in that aspect too.

The real problem with horses is the girls.

ALL girls who ride horses are fucking insane. They are just plain nuts.

And they are usually extremely sexual and good/fun in bed as well. Then you just have to get rid of them somehow, because they're fucking nuts.
