assault, yes
loose his job, yes
never work as a cop again, yes
18 mos, IMO sentence should not been that long.
dude did 2 or3 tours in Iraq, supposedly suffered PTSD
now this is funny

He assaulted a secured suspect, in his custody. If this was a civilian, I'd want the same sentence.

Why does doing 2 or 3 tours in Iraq suddenly excuse him from anything?

if he was known to be suffering from psychological problems he shouldn't have been a cop. shouldn't be allowed to hold a firearm in WI.
I guess maybe that little disorder came up conveniently after he realized he was on camera being a tough guy with someone in cuffs.

They fail to mention why this guy was handcuffed. Did he assault one of the officers before being arrested? We don't know. 18 mo. is a little harsh considering this punk probably didn't do any time at all and I'd be willing to bet he did something worse than punch someone in the face like drunk driving or something like that. Was he wrong for punching the guy, yes, was it worthy of doing time? No.

They're supposed to handcuff everybody they take into custody or detain.

for those who want details
A former Milwaukee County sheriff's deputy will spend 18 months behind bars for beating a handcuffed man who asked to use the bathroom.
38-year-old Scott Krause broke down and apologized for beating Ray Calderon because he wouldn't stop kicking the window in the sally port while waiting to be booked in the jail on an outstanding warrant.

And when someone is using his feet, to kick a window or otherwise, you hobble him (tie him by his ankles to the handcuffs).

Then again, common sense should be used. I've been in the back of a police vehicle and they had the blast heater going. I was beating on the window to get his attention, not to break it. Seems like this guy was doing the same. If he was trying to break the window, he'd have been hitting it hard not just knocking on it.

Agreed. I wasn't so much saying that this person needed to be hobbled, as I was that there was a viable alternative to beating on the guy if the officer felt that he needed to be stopped from kicking at the window.

Fuck that. If I punched a cop in the face I'd likely be in prison for a couple years, so this should be no different. Good to see at least one example of the legal system holding dirty fucking cops accountable for their actions.

As has already been said, I don't see any reason why this cop should receive a different punishment than I would for beating someone who is handcuffed. I also agree that whatever his background or history is doesn't matter. If he can't handle being a cop he shouldn't be a cop, and he is still responsible for not "handling" it.
Fuck, I hate how small it is in back of cop cars
The newer ones here have a steel cage, instead of glass.
