View Full Version : Thinking about buying a Harley

I know this isn't exactly the right forum for this, but I figured some of you might know a few things about Harleys..
Someone I know is looking to get rid of his 02 FXD Dyna Super glide w/ 12k miles on it. He's asking 5k, the blue book says 7500 retail price. He's got an intake, full exhaust, and had the bike dyno'd to jet the carbs correctly. Bike's been sitting since October, but it was winterized and started right up..
I attatched some pics.. let me know what you guys think! :rockwoot:

I think if thats the bike you want and the price is fair to you than buy it. There's a lot of people on this board that will bash Harley's at any given chance. The bottom line is they are good, reliable, fun bikes. Have at it.

I've never been into harleys.. Always kinda liked the way they looked, but didn't understand why people rode them.. My uncle just got his Road King upgraded to an S&S 106 and had the whole suspension redone as well as the tranny. Thats one extremely comfortable & fast bike, it's a lot of fun in a different way..
I think having one from each end of the spectrum would make riding that much more enjoyable as a whole..

My wife cut her finger while opening a package of chicken cutlets.
She freaked WAY the F out because Oprah had an episode where some woman was slicing celery and ended up losing her arm and breast because a cut got infected with flesh eat virus.
When I say she freaked the F out I mean she FREAKED the F OUT.
I can't wait for Oprah to go off the air.

Uh, not even close. It's a funny cartoon, that's all, sometimes it's really damn funny like the harley episode. It's just entertainment.
Oprah is a fucking phenomenon with her own gravitational pull for stupid fucking housewives.

Me either. I did specifically watch the Harley episode online though. Well worth the 20 minutes to watch it.
I watch the episodes that get good reviews or watch reruns. I never watch it when it airs for the first time, i caught the harley episode on the first run because I had been told to watch it before hand.

Yeah this deal just kinda fell into my lap, i wasn't actively looking for a Harley at all.. I can't find anything cheaper, even those that have way more miles and salvage titles are still more than this bike.. I think I'm gonna grab it tomorrow..

Is it the one with counterbalancer or just the regular twin cam?
Friend of mine had a Sportster for sale at his shop and it a took a long time and a lot of price drops to sell. I think it was a 2006.
He let me take it for a spin and it was a big adjustment.
Feet flailing about for the first couple of feet because they wanted to go where I'm used to putting them on a sportbike or standard.
Power delivery was... occuring, I guess.
Good torque right of idle followed by lots of noise and moderate acceleration
shift
gas for a sec
shift
gas for a sec
until your at top gear and you kind of put-put around.
At a stop you kinda watch everything jiggle. Readjust the mirrors because they keep moving around. It does give you something to do at stops.
Luckily, the bike I rode had quiet pipes.
For 5K I'm guessing there are things that need fixing but I think it would be worth a little work.
Actually no.
I'm just embracing "diversity" in the motorcyle community.
I wouldn't touch that thing. I'd use that 5K instead to cover a data plan on a phone so I can post up pictures of the St Patties day parade as soon as I take em.
$30 extra for a data plan = $724
Why the fuck do I have to get a data plan just to get something beside the crappo phones?

Sounds like a good deal. Many people love the Dynas. The powertrain of a big twin but on a smaller frame. Not sporty small but close. Very able bikes.
And those look like samson ground pounders on it. I bet its loud.

Any HD under KBB sounds like a good deal. Not that I'd ever buy one. People have a very overinflated idea of the value of those things. I've seen 15 year old used HDs for thousands more than KBB with just fringe and tassels (and the obligatory extra chrome). Of course, a lot of them sit forever. It's just stupid- like the clowns selling "custom" GSXRs. With a road rashed repaint and stickers

I think 5K for a 2002 Cruiser with 12K is reasonable if its in good condition.
Maybe they forgot to add the Harley tax.

+ 1500 for HD "anniversary" badge ("oh, which anni?" "iunno")
+ 500 for chrome gauge bezel
+ 500 for chrome primary cover
+ 500 for short chrome exhaust
That's about what I normally see.

He tells me that nothing is wrong with it and he said he really doesn't want to sell but he has a baby on the way so his priorities are changing.. He's my gf's Sister's BF, so if I have problems he knows I'll be able to find him..
From riding a few cruisers they do seem like they have power right off the line then you get a big disappointment waiting for the HP to kick in.. It never really does.. And the 6k or so (no tach on a lot of em) redline means very fast shifts..
The exhaust is stoopid loud.. Straight pipes that basically bounce off the ground.. he says they set off car alarms all the time.. I might put some baffles in..

i have a superglide. i've had the front end up once. been over 100 a couple times. it doesn't accelerate like a sportbike but it aint sitting still either. with exhaust/jet/ and intake it should have a little grunt to it.
having both will be very nice.

Yeah I think so.. I don't see the point in only wearing a half helmet.. Besides the fact that I don't want to buy anything else, I've been hit quite a few times in the face mask by nasty rocks.. I don't care how ridiculous I look, At least I'll keep my jaw/skin intact..
No reason not to wear jacket/pants either..
Yup 5 vehicles.. I think I need a bigger garage..
