I like bike, bikers and messin with bikes. I like buyin em, sellin em, talkin about em, bsin about em....and, for the most part, bikers seem to be "a cut above".

So when I deal with a buttwipe, they usually stick out like a sore thumb.

I've been "corresponding" with a fellow who responded to one of my CL listings, for a few days now. REALLY HOT for one of my bikes....REALLY HOT! lots of emails, I send him lotsa pics...back and forth, back and forth...

Yesterday he tells me it's SOLD!!! He has loan approval, he wants the vin for insurance, wants to pick it up tonight, blah blah blah. Make appointment, he shows up at appointed time, drools over bike, I shows him inspection sticker, title, run the bike and generally burn up out an hour of time. He's ready to do the deal, hands me a cashiers check for $1100 less than agreed on price.

I give him the "Well?" look.

He says "Oh, yea, the bank says the loan value is only $xxxx.xx, so that's what they gave me".

I give him the blank "And?"

So he says "So, that's what the bike is worth."

So I say "And what about your down payment?"

So he says "Well, the bank guy said that's what the bike is worth, so this is what you have to sell it to me for."

So I say "Really?"

He gets agitated, says "Yep, you gotta sell me that bike for this amount, we agreed you 'd sell it to me".

"That so?"

"Yep...you gotta sell it to me, the check's all ready made out in your name."

"Ok, I'll sell it to ya."

"Really?"

"Yup, just as soon as you come up with the other $1100."

"But the guy at the bank says $xxxxxxx is the value!!!!!"

"Then buy one from him." Handed him back his check, closed up the garage, the whole time he's yelling at me that I "gotta sell me the bike, gotta sell me the bike...what kinda guy are you , tryin' to rip people off???"

As I walked away into the house, I told him he needed to leave. He's yellin' at me the whole time.

Now he's sending me nasty emails.

Cripes. Forty years old and still a little creep.

Does he still live in his mom's basement?

When I was selling my ninja 250, I had a guy come over and wanted to put money down and make payments. I went with it and ask how much he could put down. Me expected half to three thirds. Nope. He wanted to put down $200, make payments, AND take the bike now. Haha. That's a negative ghost rider.

Hell. I think having my four wisdom teeth pulled should have only cost me $200, not $1200. I'm marching right over there and getting a refund right meow.

I was just thinking about putting the ZX-11 up for sale.
This thread doesn't exactly inspire me.

Meh....that's the first one of those I've had in a couple of years...and I've done this 15-20 times per year for a while. Most of my interactions have been pretty positive, but I'm usually a little more proactive about screening; but this guy was an engineer (should have tipped me off right away) at one of the big defense contractors we have around here; you'd think he'd have a little sense, right?

Usually the no money squirrels hit you up with "I'll give you XXXX for it" (usually 1/2 of your listed price) right on their opening email...I don't answer those, just hit delete.

Anyway, don't let it discourage you from CL; it was worth a laugh or two....

A fair number of people around here have been dealing with buyers who show up to pick up the bike and tell them it's (say) $500.00 less than the agreed upon sum, or the deal is off.

I would laugh in their face and turn away. Simple, yet effective.

I'd do the same, but substitute "implied threat" for "laugh."

Keep a close eye on your bike.

And your house. Tell your neighbors what he looks like and what vehicle he drives and advise them of the situation so they can hopefully keep an eye on your place if you aren't around.

I've got my trailer up for sale on CL and so far it's been a colossal waste of my time; I've wasted several hours conversing with idiots via e-mail, taking more pics for them, asking questions that are answered in the fucking ad, showing them the trailer at home, etc. I had one person e-mail me 20x asking all sorts of questions about it and then ends it with "I think I'll go with a flatbed trailer."

The biggest douche was some guy that recently moved here from CT. He shows up in a fucking Prius and I'm thinking "OK, he must have another vehicle that can tow this with." After showing him how the trailer works, etc. I ask him what he will use it for and he says he's looking for something to tow 2 dirtbikes behind his Prius. Then he offers me 2/3 of my asking price. It was a quick "Sorry, but no thanks" from me and I sent him on his merry way.

I wouldn't mind so much but right now things are very crazy for us and I don't have the patience for this ridiculous shit. At the same time I need the space in the garage and this thing needs to go, so I'm forced to deal with it.

What a stupid fuck. I doubt the guy's banker told him that (it is possible, though). What he probably said was something like "the most I can loan on that bike is xxx"

I see this all the time. I make it very clear to the customer. My loan policy says I have to go by NADA loan value. However, the retail on the bike/car is xxxx. That means you will need a down payment.

Isn't typical loan to value ratio like 90% max? I know used cars are financed at 100% a lot of the time, but used bikes? Seems like a bad idea for banks to do that.

You can't just go in and get a personal loan or line of credit? It took me about 20 minutes to get a line of credit. I can use it for whatever I wish, new vehicle, hookers, blow, vehicles for hookers on blow..

Sounds like he needs a bit of an attitude adjustment and a lesson on how buying/selling works.

And definitely watch your house and your stuff.

Yeah you can, but wouldn't your interest rate be higher because it is a non secured loan?

Yeah, usually closer to 80%. It's good to have the NADA subscription because it is a documented "loan value" that already has the retail discounted.

Yes, it is risky for anything to be done at 100%, especially toys. There are mitigating factors such as deep, perfect credit or lots of verifiable income.

This, unfortunately.

Keep his information handy to give to the police.

Tmall - the world of "living well on credit" is over. And, not everyone has good credit. Especially not those that have a difficult time negotiating a deal the RIGHT way.
