Not sure if this is NEWS...or off topic...but:

On March 15, 2010 a rock slide occured 2 miles south of Chilhowee Dam on US129 closing both lanes of traffic. On March 19, 2010, traffic was blocked at the North Carolina and Tennessee state line preventing access to 11 miles of US129, commonly known as the Dragon. This road block also prevents access from Parson's Branch Road and the Calderwood Dam area. On March 24, 2010, TNDOT released a reopening date of September 1, 2010.

This road is not only a tourist attraction in itself, but also provides a commuter route for Tennessee and North Carolina residents, visitors, and commercial traffic. The only alternative is US441 through the Smoky Mountain National Park or the Cherohala Skyway. Either of these options present a great inconvenience.

Both the North Carolina and Tennessee areas near US129 rely on tourism as a major source of revenue. This road closure will have a definite impact on the local economy. We encourage all officials to take whatever steps are necessary to expedite the reopening of part or all of this US highway.

Anyone who is interested in expressing their concerns over the temporary closure of US129 should contact these officials:

Sounds to me like they want to stop the bikes?? They could have that cleared in a couple days from what I have seen.

they say that a huge part of it looks to be still in jeopardy and they have to bid out the contract to pull it down and then to actually have the rock pulled down...

Honestly I doubt they want to stop bikes. It's a very poor area and the bikes bring a huge amount of both tourist, and speeding revenue.

Sucks but I'm still going down....plenty of great roads in those parts.

september thing is not true, they don't have a date, so they just made up one.

Brad (owner of DGMR) is having a big meeting with a lot of legislature of both Tenn and NC along with THP and NCHP and Tenn/NC emergency services. They are trying to work out a solution for NC to patrol and provide services to the Tennessee road while the rockslide is still being repaired..

Turns out, Sept was an arbitrary date published by the TVA because they had to have a date to publish.
They're actually awarding the contract for the removal Monday, so they’ll know then what the est. time actually is…but again…it’s a 3rd part contract, so there may be change orders or continuances. Or hell, they may finish in record time who knows. I doubt there are early completion rewards though..so no incentive to hurry.

It wasn't by TVA, we have nothing to do with that. It was posted on the TDOT twitter page...

So what is it?

Time frame right now is said to be August 1st. One contractor has said 30-45 days from beginning work and they can have it safe enough to open one lane through.

Yeah but one lane? With what? Traffic light?

they are already paying highway patrol to guard the barricade 24/7, putting 2 tdot guys there with flags would be cheaper.

One lane? How will the Harley's make the turns?

I think this is a conspiracy by the locals to scare away other bikers.

one lane at the rockslide, that's only a few hundred feet well away from the gap. The gap will be completely open if that is the case.
