Going to have to give up the VFR, I'm afraid. OK, not "have to", but it would make life easier. Insurance for a year is just over $1K and I already have a track bike that barely sees me, as it is.
I'm looking at about $800.00 for the Givi bags and mounting hardware. I think that the biggest change for me, between the VFR and the ER-6N, will be the suspension. The VFR has been fitted with Gold Valves and a Penske racing shock. I'll take a well suspended bike over horsepower, any day of the week.

I just got back from buying my own '09 ER-6N. I'll have the Givi bags by Tuesday, but the mounting hardware might not be available until May. This might not be a big problem overall, but the bike I'm getting doesn't have the passenger grab handles. They were removed to give to another customer, who had issues with his.
I got money off the price, a shop manual, and a Dowco cover for buying this particular bike, but it would be nice to have either the grab handles or the 650 Ninja style inserts for now until I can get the bags mounted. If anyone has an idea where I could reliably get either, I'd appreciate it.
I pick the bike up on Wednesday night.

mrcycles.com has Kawasaki microfiche and list the grab handles being for sale. I don't know if they are in stock or not. The part numbers shown on the fiche are 46095A/C for right side and 46075/B for left. In the parts list it shows 46075 for LH and 46075 for RH. They are also listed at around $60 per side with another $10 or so for mounting hardware.

Rangerscott, if you ever decide to mount Givi luggage on your bike, it's a bit of a pain in the ass and requires relocating the turn signals and extending the signal light wiring. I'm still looking for an aftermarket shock, as the Elka ended up having a clearance problem on the lower mount. Strange, as I know they've sold a bunch of them for use on the Ninja 650, which has the same frame and swingarm.

Thinks for the heads up. No luggage for now, but maybe if I find a set really cheap. Windshield would go on before luggage.
First thing that is going on my is sliders or the cage.
These sliders are nice but I think they are mounted too low. I can picture the bike just tumping over them and the tank hitting the ground. Would be stronger if they tig welded the shafts onto the plates.

Yeah, those look pretty low. I could definitely see the bike rocking up onto the tank. I've seen some that mount higher up, but closer to the bike, which would probably both protect better and make it more difficult for them to snap off. You may find this page useful. It's more keyed to the Ninja 650R, but most things should fit.
http://homepages.slingshot.co.nz/~shanetp/Sliders.html
I saw your thread about the crash bars. I like them, but they look like they would make working on the bike more difficult.
I needed the luggage for my commute, so that went on first. If you do decide to buy the luggage assemble all the brackets loosely first, then have a friend hold them in place while you get everything finger tight. It's a real pain in the ass if you're assembling it on the bike, getting everything to line up. It's good quality stuff and it does fit well, there's just an easier way to get it done than how I did it (alone and piece-by-piece).
I've already bought a Givi A446 screen, in solid black, and I'm just waiting for the mounting hardware. That seems to be a common theme with buying Givi stuff in Canada.

O there's a setup. A many step setup. I of course being super awesome went around the FSM. Theres a few FSM's on ebay for $30 and less. I highly recommend getting one.
The air filter box is shaped like most sport bikes, but its not two half shells screwed together. The foam filter is on a plastic "cassette" and it pulls out of the top. Sooooo the fsm wants you to drain the tank, disconnect the fuel line, two electrical connections, then pull the tank off. Haha. Ya right. What i did was unbolt the two back bolts, pulled the top from front catchers. Then i put my plastic socket box under the rear so the fuel pump doest hit anything. I then lefted the front as much as possible and used a Mr Clean filter to hold the front up. I used a stubby phillips and my girly hands to get the filter out. You just have to be real careful with the fuel line. Its barely long enouh and the fuel rail is plastic. Ill up load the pics later.

In the maintance section it sounded like it was anti-drain back, but when you go farther into he fsm for filter change it says to use a pump to drain the tank.

I read that. Sounds like quite the pain in the ass. Did you read the part that says, "After riding through rain or on muddy roads, the element should be cleaned immediately"? Hell, I'm already two cleanings behind.
On the upside, Penske says that they have a model 8983, dual adjustable shock for it.

Sure. For the low low price of $850.
Hell when I went to get the bike it was rain every day I was there. Since there is no fairing and the position of the two intake tubes, it may get a good amount of water in the intake box.

Yup, I saw that. They do have a few interesting things there. I'm thinking about a hugger, to keep the spray down in the rain.
BTW, I had them throw in a shop manual with the bike, so I'm all set from that angle.
Rangerscott

The hugger looks like the same size, just an option for paint.
My list so far is
1. Crash bars
2. Cutting mirror rods, then tigging in a piece to extend. The mirrors are absolutely useless.
3. & 4. Tie. Either the painted under fender or a windshield.
5. Seat cowl, but not for $130.
6. Maybe the that sport bike handle conversion
7. Exhaust. The stock exhaust sounds fine to me so ill just wait until a good deal comes along.

I agree about the mirrors. After the great mirrors on the VFR, that made me feel like I had eyes in the back of my head, the ER's are almost worthless. I've been trying to come up with some sort of long stem mirror alternative. I don't like bar-end mirrors.

Not fan of the ends either. Especially the price on those little things. The rod just needs to be longer. Gonna get a machine shop the cut the mirror rods, tig maybe 2" of same diameter. Grind/sand smooth then re-powder coat.

There's a company that makes extenders that move the mirrors out about 2 inches, but the things look like crap.

Hey Big Papa. I disconnected my tank and it is anti-drain back. Yea for us.
My crash bars should be here Friday. I'll get them on asap since I'll be going on a pie run on Saturday. I'll get pics up asap. I did come up with some rear tail sliders. There are the ones on ebay.

but I don't want to pay that price. I'm just going to order another set of stand spool sliders like I have on right now. I'll get a longer bolt and spacer to get it to fit snug. I can also use it as a place to put netting hooks.

Papa_Complex

I'm guessing that it's a run for pie. Everyone loves pie :D
Good news about the tank. That will simplify things considerably. I guess that they say to drain the tank before removal for liability reasons, rather than functional ones. Then again I've seen some pretty stupid instructions in service manuals, over the years, that make anything take 3 times as long.

Pie run equals pie eating.
I will say because of the tanks shape, its a wobbly bastard. Also be careful; everyhing on the fuel system is plastic.

I do like your idea about using the spools on the grab handles. It's a much more logical contact point. You might want to try laying the bike down, or putting a piece of plywood up against it when it's upright, to see if the spool makes contact first.
I'm kicking myself now for not taking pictures of the Givi installation, while I was doing it. It would have been a good piece for my website. I'll have to remember to do it when I mount the windscreen.

You can always use the oil sensor port but it wont be useful if its a tiny port. Usually theres a port/bolt in an engine that goes to an oil passage that isnt used, but of course youd need anothergport for the return.
The 2010's rads are bigger. Ill keep an eye out for one.

I was better off replacing the stock cooler, though I could also have just added a secondary oil cooler. The early B12 is air/oil cooled, not liquid cooled.

I forgot about a sandwhich adapter. Theres room for a 6" or longer oil filter on this bike. I installed an oil cooler on my vehicle and the oil stays golden a lot longer now.
I was just thinking of a small 3 or 4 row cooler. Not knowing the strength of the oil cooler. I wouldnt want to go too big on the cooler or run too long of hoses. Relocate the horn and theres plenty of room on the left side. If be it, Im sure I can make some brackets to mount it front of the rad.

Inlet Size 3/8 in. NPT
Outlet Size 3/8 in. NPT
Notes 1 inch thick. Use 0.500 inch oil lines. 2.500 and 3.125 inch O-rings included.
The adapter on my vehicle is the same but with a different adapter and just one O-ring size. Not sure why the 186 has two different size O-ring sizes on it, but hey it fits two different diameters.

Just mounted a set of low braced Renthal bars, with some KTM bar end weights, on my bike. Somewhat softer grips too. The bike was agile to start with but, with the slightly wider bars, it might almost be TOO agile now. Not a bad way to spend $150.00. The straighter bars also reduce the pressure on the outside ball of the hand, reducing fatigue and wrist strain.
