I was very suprised, when talking to someone on here, to find out that they had never ridden a horse!
I grew up showing and competing until I sold my last horse at 21 (:().
So....have you ever ridden a horse?

Yeah, like 20+ years ago.
First time was on my honeymoon when we did a horse riding excursion. I wasn't all that thrilled with it. I rather a dirt bike.

yup, born and raised on a farm, but dad hated horses, so my first time was over at my friends place.

never. Never really had the desire, even though I grew up on a farm and some of my friends had em.

I had a Welsh pony for a while when I was a kid.
Unfortunately, I never developed a taste for riding.
Could've had something to do with the pony deciding it would be a good idea to brush that little burden off his back on a low-branched tree...
...more than once.

I'm sorry brother.. this made me
We had horses when I was younger.. sold the last of them when I was... 21? when my parents moved from our farm in MO.

A couple of times. They are alot of fun, but they are alot of work to keep and only one HP. So bikes are definitely more to my liking, being raised up in a garage mechanicing on things makes it not much to keep and maintain a bike.

I'm in between the once or twice and many many times. I prefer a 200-800lb machine that does exactly what it's told to do over a 1500lb animal that does what IT wants to do ;) I dont dislike horses, I just like bikes a lot better!

Yes....a handful of times.
It's not for me, though....the brain size to animal size/power ratio is all wrong, IMHO. A powerful 1,500 pound animal with a brain the size of my fist CANNOT be trusted. :lmao:

No, big animals are for killin', not ridin'!

They're such a huge time commitment. I'm considering leasing so that I only feel obligated a couple of nights a week. We'll see.

Maybe once or twice as a kid for a guided (horse completely ignores you) ride or something. I don't think that counts though. Would love to own a few some day- like when I buy my grandparents' farm. I've always thought a good horse is like a good dog- expects you to take care of it, listens to you, but smart enough to know when bad things would happen.

They are truly one of the most beautiful and magnificent animals I can think of....I never owned one either, but lived near many farms and I just adopted them. They are so smart and powerful, yet gentle all at the same time. Smart enough to be clever and knock you off occasionally or cause other trouble too, which just makes me think even more highly of them.

I've ridden several times. When I was 7 my parents had me taking English riding lessons, but that only lasted about a year (and I've since forgotten about 95% of my riding skills). I'm fortunate now that one of my coworkers back home has horses and she invites me over to ride. Although the last time I was over there the saddle came loose and I fell off. Spooked the horse more than it spooked me, I think.
but have you ever ridden on an elephant?
Yes, at the Toronto Zoo when I was a child. Cost my parents like 25 bucks for me to go for a ride about 100 feet, lol.

Yeah, somewhere between once or twice and many, many. I humored my wife and took some English riding lessons. It was actually pretty fun, but I needed to get in much better shape for it. :)

I rode alot as a kid, and even as a teenager since my family had horses but I've never had one of my own. One day tho, I plan to have some land and at least one horse.

Yes. And an ostrich. :wtfru:
Never again will I ride an ostrich without some "liquid encouragement". Giant birds are evil - or I am just being a vag about it.

Yes. I've owned horses for most of my life.
We just sold our last horse about 3 years ago now. In a few years we'll look to get two more. The kids have to get a little bit older first. Horses and young kids are a lot to take care of at the same time. I already take care of 60 cows.

Have you ridden a whale shark,
a sea turtle,
A dolphin
or a Manta Ray ?
i still havent snagged a whale shark or manta ray, but they are on my list!
I grew up riding and showing Saddleseat. After I sold my horse I taught lessons so I could keep riding for free.
Kelly I would LOVE to lease a horse but I get way too attached. Part of the reason I bought my VFR was because I really wanted a horse. Tooo much time and money involved! Now I actually have enough land to have 1 but then you have to have a barn, and hay, and tack, and and and.. you know the deal!

I know exactly what you mean. I've never leased and I know I would get attached....but at least I'd be able to ride without the time/tack/money commitment. I don't want to take random lessons. I just want a horse I can take out a couple of times a week for trails or just to ride.

I rode one once on a tour of the grand canyon. Since I never ridden before, they put me on Barney, an old gentle horse. He was fun, but I kept forgetting to tell him to stop eating foliage because I was too busy enjoying the scenery. At one point the guide was trying to get our picture so I was trying to back Barney up but then I forgot to ease off the tension of the reins and I caught it in time before he back us up over the ledge
I dont get the love of being on the back of a wild animal, 10 times as big, 10 times as strong as an average man, that could decide to beat you like a redheaded stepchild anytimne it chooses.
Gimme a bike anyday. At least my mistakes are usually my own.

I don't know if I can explain it.. I look at horses like many of you look at motorcycles. It's a challenge. I always preferred horses with some spunk to them - horses that do exactly what you tell them all the time are BORING. The last horse I spent any time with was a Polish Arabian Stallion that had been in a pasture for years with a few mares. His owner was afraid of him and he hadn't been ridden in years. He and I became great friends and he was an awesome horse. Eventually his owner took him back to her land (he had been at my instructors barn for several years) and one Spring he foundered on rich grass and died. His owner knew better too. That was the last time I've really ridden. :(
Horses are magic. I don't know how to word it any better.
Once my son is old enough to be doing his own thing and not wanting mom around so much I will get another.
Oh and Clary, just wanted to let you know I will be growing CORN in my yard again this year!! :lmao:

I rode some when I was young. A relative had a farm with a few horses. It was fun but not for me. To some degree I prefer working with mechanical things over living things. The mechanical things are easier for me to understand. Amazingly enough I am still single.

A couple of times, when I was a kid. My niece rides competitively, but her horse is at the vet's for surgery today. Might be lame :(

I'm with Apoc on this one, I don't need a huge animal calling the shots when I am on it. Give me an old, tame and slow horse!

Oddly enough I like them both. Horses/dogs and motorcycles are pretty simple- feed them, take care of them, give them a home and they'll take care of you. Not at all like humans, where they'll randomly decide they hate you.

I've only ridden a horse a few times, and always with someone by my side to guide them. I had fun. They're powerful creatures though, so I was kind of intimidated.

Yes, I've ridden a horse on numerous occasions. We had them at Grandma's house and generally rode bareback.
My oldest sister still rides - dressage. So if I ride with her I have to use an English saddle. It takes some getting used to but I manage.
but have you ever ridden on an elephant?
Yep. I was very small but Mom has a picture of me.

Dogs I'm fine with. Horses require special shit like their own house. Taking a horse somewhere is a pain in the dick too. Dogs are comparatively easy.
