I would hate having to deal with that on a regular basis...but it does make for a cool pic.

I know one of those pictures is of the sandstorm we had on Easter Sunday. I didn't get any pictures of those, but I did get a few of the one that rolled in yesterday afternoon.

Me personally... having already been in the middle of several such storms, but only ever having seen them come in once or twice, it is a little bizarre, but I guess I feel more annoyance than anything else. It means either having to stay indoors, or wrap my face up when I have to walk outside in it.

Thats an easy one, HIDE. I saw so many of those come rolling in when I was here in 2003 and there was no where really to go. This time around I just go into my room or in my office....lol Screw standing out in that crap.

Amazing pictures but sounds (and looks) like it would be a major PITA if caught in the middle with no shelter.

We had one while I was in Kuwait in 02 but it actually originated in the Sahara and was fallout from high level dust clouds. It was very fine silt when it made it to Kuwait and was more like a fog, visibility was about 80 yrds or so. What was worse was the 10 minute rain shower we had one morning when it was 125F and made the humidity shoot up. I never complain about GA summers anymore

Ugh, I still remember that shit. I've witnessed ones in both Kuwait and in Eastern New Mexico. Absolutely full of suck. That shit gets into everything.

I always thought the aftermath was cooler. The whole place looks like a Mars landscape, complete with reddish tint (I assume from leftover sand/dust in the air).

This is very true... just the other day we had one that rolled in while I was in the office. I walked out to have a smoke and it was quite literally orange outside. It felt weird going back indoors because the light seemed overly blue.

That being said... it makes keeping weapons clean a real bitch.

Oh not to mention daily vehicle maintenance!!! It was the best day of my deployment when some genius decided to snorkle the APCs and put nylons over the opening!:rockwoot:

Condom over the barrel and masking tape over the ejector port and any small gas orifaces.

Fire it once and all the tape and condom is blown off, but it will keep all the dust and sand out. ive seen

They have some pretty sophisticated systems now for the vehicles to deal with the sand. I'm not a mechanic, so I couldn't possibly explain how any of it works (and it's different if you're talking HMMWVS, 923s, HETs or MRAPs), but I do know that with as much convoy movement as we get just through my base alone, it has to be doing the trick. I saw some 923s the other day that had dual filters that looked like translucent cylinders with some sort of spinning mechanism inside... I have no idea how that works, but it looked bad ass to see a line of them driving down the road with those.

We have plastic covers for the end of the barrel, but they don't allow us to put masking tape on our weapons (the OP is our brigade armor... I think his head would explode if anyone did that to his weapons, ). And really tape (even duct tape) isn't worth a crap in this heat, the adhesive won't keep the tape on and then what mildly sticky residue is left behind will just trap even more dust. I think cleaning weapons is fun, actually - I take a lot of pride in maintaining my arms. And I twitch pretty hard core when I see my retarded boss with a mm thick layer of grime on his M9, even though I have hounded him repeatedly to clean it (dumbass doesn't even carry his 30 rounds with him... not my problem, if he gets caught with his pants down, it'll just do the world a favor). But our OPTEMPO has been really hot and heavy the last few weeks, so even though I keep a cleaning kit at my desk, I haven't had the free time to sit down and do it as regularly as I would like.

That being said, my M4 has been locked up in the bunker since the last time I went outside the wire. On post, since I am always out and about going to project sites, I carry an M9. Thing is a piece of cake to clean... but it still pisses me off when I clean it, and then it gets filthy again the same day thanks to a dust storm.
