Anybody catch UFC 112? I didn't see it but just caught this story, seems pretty weird...

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates – As the fourth round ended in the middleweight championship fight on Saturday at UFC 112 at Ferrari World, Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White picked up Anderson Silva’s title belt and tossed it in the direction of Silva’s manager, Ed Soares.

White was nearly becoming physically ill watching Silva clown in the cage and avoid fighting. He wanted nothing to do with presenting the champion with his belt after the fight with Demian Maia ended.
More From Kevin Iole

Silva pranced around the ring, making odd motions and strange faces, banging the mat, running in circles and generally behaving as if he had no understanding that people paid significant money to watch him fight.

He looked like a fool and he disrespected his opponent, the sport, his employers and, most significantly, a live crowd which paid a gate of $3.5 million as well as the hundreds of thousands of people who purchased the pay-per-view to watch him.

White seethed at the postfight news conference and tossed verbal hand grenades in Silva’s direction. After meeting with reporters following the news conference, White headed to Silva’s trailer for a showdown.

He said he didn’t know how he would punish Silva, who won by scores of 50-45, 50-45 and 49-46, but said he would find a way to make it up to the fans for having to sit through such a poor, confounding main event.

Perhaps the best way White can get even with Silva, who was defiant at the postfight news conference, is to have Silva fight on the card he is planning to benefit the military in Afghanistan.

White looked extraordinarily angry when he walked into the room and didn’t pull any punches when he began to speak.

“I’ll answer the questions about what a disgrace the main event was and what an embarrassment it is,” White said almost immediately upon taking the lectern postfight. “I don’t think I’ve ever been more embarrassed in 10 years of being in this business. It’s the first time I’ve ever walked out of a main event.”

By the time the fifth round was winding to a close, the sellout crowd of 11,008 was chanting Maia’s name.

Silva meekly apologized in the cage in an interview with television analyst Joe Rogan, but he struck a more defiant chord at the postfight news conference.

“Unfortunately, not every fight turns out the way everyone would like,” Silva said through Soares, who was interpreting for him. “I came here well-trained, but Demian disrespected me, not as a person, but he disrespected me as a fighter. I take that very seriously. I came here to do my job, which was to beat him up and punish him. That’s exactly what I did.”

Silva dodged the question several times, but finally said vaguely that he felt Maia disrespected him in prefight interviews when Maia, a jiu-jitsu black belt, talked about breaking his arm.

What didn’t make sense about Silva’s answer was that if he felt disrespected was that he spent much of the last three rounds running and clowning and not punching or kicking. He had the opportunity to make Maia pay for his words, if Maia actually said anything incendiary, but he chose instead to circle, wiggle his back side, make faces and essentially make a fool out of anyone who either purchased a ticket or bought the pay-per-view.

“The way I feel, my mission was completed,” Silva said. “I came in and dominated the fight and did what I had to do. That’s how I feel.”

Silva was clearly a far better fighter than Maia, whose only hope of winning was to somehow get the fight to the ground and catch Silva in a submission hold. Silva was faster and could nearly land his punches at will.

He had a far more varied attack and broke Maia’s nose with a flying knee in the second.

The highlights for Silva, though, lessened as the fight wore on and he spent more time mocking Maia and making a jackass of himself.

His actions will have deep repercussions. For one, the fight was aired live in the U.S. at 1 p.m. ET, but was still going to be replayed in its normal pay-per-view time slot beginning at 10 p.m. ET.

Fans who may have purchased the fight in its normal slot likely didn’t buy it after catching word of Silva’s antics.

Even more, Silva did the same thing at UFC 90 and then had a lackluster performance at UFC 97.

White glared at Silva as Silva answered questions from the media. Clearly, Silva’s words did not soothe his boss’ feelings.

“I’m more unhappy than I was when I walked in the door,” White said after hearing Silva’s lame answers at the news conference. “That’s why I ended the news conference. I couldn’t stand to listen to that [expletive] any more.”

Silva cost himself a big chunk of his reputation as well as a lot of money. He lost the respect of the ownership of the UFC, who were embarrassed in front of their new partners, the investment group from Abu Dhabi who bought a reported 10 percent of the company.

He may have lost his status as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

He lost his opportunity to drop to welterweight as he said he wanted to do before the fight and challenge 170-pound champion Georges St. Pierre.

“He doesn’t deserve to fight GSP,” White fairly spat.

Early in the news conference, White said Silva might become the first champion to fight on the preliminary card.

Wherever he fights, Silva had better pray that White stacks the card with a lot of fights people want to see.

Because if Anderson Silva is the main attraction, don’t be shocked if the fans stay away in droves.

I didn't see the fight either and just read about it this morning before signing on here. Glad I didn't spend the $44.95...but I was wanting to.

I ended up watching an old movie...Reservoir Dogs...what a trip !!

I'm not sorry at all that I missed it... Truth is though, as shitty as it is for the fans, it's a REAL big fuck you to White... How about giving Silva someone he CAN'T toy with? Someone who will push him... that's White's failure, not Silva's.

Speaking of crazy shit... WTF happened with Penn?

Yeah I couldn't believe Penn lost.

As far as Silva I don't think there is ANY competition for him in his weight class in the UFC. He will have to move up in weight to find competition imho.

The only guy that I think can give him competition in a lighter weight class is GSP...now I would pay to see that bout. :rockwoot:

He wouldn't be able to toy with GSP... and White's threatening to pull that opportunity away from him.

In the striking department, he would. GSP would ground him immediately, however, and if he didn't get tagged on the way in, he would probably beat Silva by smothering, boring decision. He probably wouldn't submit him and he certainly wouldn't pound him out.

Silva needs to make a permanent move to light-heavyweight. He would still have the edge against almost everyone on the feet, but there are wrestlers up there who could beat his ass on the ground.

Lyoto Machida :squint:

After his last performance he doesn't deserve to fight Silva.

After his last performance he doesn't deserve to fight Silva.

 He's the undefeated Light Heavyweight Champion...whether you agreed with the decision against Rua or not.

The outcome of the fight against Shogun is debatable but he agreed to a rematch in May...right ? I can't wait to see that one !!

I'd be good with Silva fighting Rua or Machida or even dropping down to fight GSP.

Huh? You sure you don't have that backwards?

Machida and Silva are friends and team mates, anyway. They're very adamant about not fighting one another. If Rua takes the light heavyweight belt next month, however, we could definitely see Silva fighting for the championship. Shogun vs the Spider could be epic.

Talking strictly performance, Machida doesn't deserve to be champion... I'd be the happiest motherfucker in the world if he redeemed himself in the rematch... I LOVE Machida, but his performance against Rua was quite unimpressive.

Ok I went back and watched the entire fight yesterday after reading this post. I did NOT see it live which I hate to admit but I didn't. I was busy with other stuff and didn't want to pay the $$ to just record it on the DVR.

I agree that his performance was less than I would expect from him especially seeing how devastating he was in his previous two fights when he completely destroyed Thiago Silva and Rashad Evans to win the belt.

The fight really could have gone either way or even been scored a draw imho. Either fighter could have won by a point.

Problem is if you want to take the belt you have to flat out beat the champ and this one was close.

My personal scoring of this fight says Shogun should have won by 1 point but a couple of the rounds were almost too close to call.

The leg kicks by Rua to the body of Machida were awesome but he got tagged several times himself.

I'm looking forward to the rematch...big time.

This. I am a big fan of the Silva/Machida camp, but their last two fights have sucked. I'd like to see a Machida/Rua fight of the likes of the Machida/Evans fight.

The clowning Silva does has gotten out of hand. I loved in in the Griffin fight, but this was a little much. If he disrespected you THAT much, knock him the fuck out in the first round and send his ass home.

His performance was fine considering the man he was fighting. Mauricio Rua is one of the best 205-ers the sport has ever known, and I'd have bet money he would have walked through Evans and Thiago Silva just as easily. I thought their fight was a great display of technique and timing, and Machida's performance was due solely to his level of competition, not his aggression or skill. In my opinion, Shogun outpointed him, but Machida landed the harder shots.

I think Machida takes the rematch convincingly, however.

No disagreement here. I used to watch Pride before the UFC and am familiar with Rua.

Part of my opinion is based on the fact that most of the Pride guys just don't seem to do as well in the UFC as I was expecting. I honestly thought that Pride fighters were better than the UFC fighters. I thought Fedor would destroy pretty much anybody in the UFC but I'm not so sure about that now. :idk:

Hell I thought CroCop would dominate and he's pretty much 2nd rate these days. Even Rua had a lackluster showing in his first UFC fight against Forrest Griffin. He did beat an old Coleman and admittedly pounded Liddell.

That's why I said I thought Machida's performance was less than I expected...responding to OSP who obviously thought he totally sucked.

I honestly thought he would have been a little more active and more convincing that's all.

I totally agree about the technique and timing...not sure I agree that Machida landed the harder shots...the leg kicks to the body from Rua were the hardest imho.

Lots of variables here. For starters, the UFC has more wrestlers versus the striking-heavy pool from Pride. Second, fighting in a ring is very different from fighting in a cage (the cage heavily favors wrestlers and clinch work, for example). Guys like Cro Cop used the ring to corner and trap people, something he can't do inside the Octagon. There are also differences in rules between the two organizations; for example, head stomps and soccer kicks were allowed in Pride, which favored the styles of guys like Wanderlei Silva.

Biggest deal is the cage/ring thing. Totally changes the dynamics of a fight. Lesnar or Carwin would have a good shot at beating Fedor in a cage, probably not so much in a ring.

Many former Pride fighters have done well within the UFC. Anderson Silva and Quinton Jackson are prime examples.

All good points and I agree and am aware of this. I didn't say I didn't understand the difference. I just thought Machida would have fared better against Rua and would have been more active so in MY opinion his performance was less than "I" expected it to be. :idk:

I thought he would have had an easier time just like you seem to think that he will in the rematch.

As far as the Pride v.s. UFC fighters I guess I should have said that I thought that the pride fighters "of late" would have fared better like Cro Cop...Rua in his first fight against Forrest Griffin and even Gomi.

Still pizzes me off that Fedor can't/won't fight in the UFC.

I am looking forward to Faber/Aldo. I "hope" Faber can hang but after watching Aldo handle Mike Brown it's not looking too promising.

The cage stole Cro Cop's soul. Had he fought Gonzaga in Pride at that same time instead of the UFC, I believe the outcome would have been very different, and he would not be the anti-fighter he's become today. Gomi started looking like crap way before he came to the UFC to fight Florian.

I'd like to see him against the UFC's heavies, but it won't break my heart if he never makes it. He is probably on the tail end of his career and he has enough interesting fights in Strikeforce and Japan to legitimately wrap things up. If he beats Werdum, Barnett, Overeem, and maybe Antonio Silva and Bobby Lashley (depends on how their standing looks at the time), he will still finish his career with one of the best records in the history of the sport. I think Lesnar will lose in the UFC way before Fedor loses elsewhere, which will take the fire out of the match-up before it even transpires.

 Been away for a few days...again good points. I actually hope Lesnar does lose. He's big and bad but I've just never been a fan of his.

I think Silva will come to 205 and fight Rua before you see Jackson/Rua 2
