It's a story about a retard who lost his phone. The article didn't go into detail about the phone capabilities so why does anyone care?

There is also new iphone specs at the same place. A lot of people care, that's why Apple keeps everything tightlipped about it. If you don't care, shut the fuck up it's not that fucking hard. It gets tiring seeing you post the same shit when people on here actually want to discuss things.

Everyone wants their 15 minutes...including the guy who found the phone.
Edit: After reading some responses i can see how it's a big deal....but it just seems kind of blown out of proportion. :idk:

It looks like the kid was still working at Apple tho, so maybe they didnt fire him yet.
Im curious as to what the differences will be.

Seems like a lot of people dont believe that the Phone was simply found but that Gizmodo stole it or had somebody steal it somehow. I dont know about that but if it was found the guy who had it should have gotten more than $5000 for it.

Id be amazed if the guy keeps his job, Im sure Steve Jobs would send him to Guantanamo if he could. If he doesnt get fired then it probale means this was a PR leak by Apple.

Fail or marketing ploy?
Marketing ploy. It's to either to raise hype or actually throw people off (bogus design).

If they were so concerned he should not have had a phone to take out into the field.
People make mistakes and this had to factor into their "risk assessment" when deciding to give it to him. :idk:

This is why is smells of marketing. Apple R&D is anal and close-guarded about their products in development. They don't just hand out prototypes to anyone in their employ; that's why some young employee losing it somewhere is far-fetched to me.
I dont know, why did they kill the software so fast if they wanted it "out there." Sounds like he was beta testing it and fucked up huge. They went through a lot of trouble to make it look like a 3GS with the specifically made case too.
If he was working on the phone capabilities software, it would seem that he would need a field device to test it.

Yup. They're really concerned about security, but they just happened to let a project engineer take a phone home and play with it anyway, because, hey, that's what you do with crucial prototypes, and it just happened to be picked up by somebody who can precisely identify every iteration of iphone and could tell it was a prototype... mmmhm.

The phone is approaching release date, it's not like it's in first development. It is due to be shown to the public in June, it is very late in the game of development and testing would be going full swing right now.
If the guy is who they say he is in the article, it would not be unheard of for him to have a development device. He is one of the most important guys in the phone being a phone.

They may not necessarily want the software "out there" they just want the buzz and rumor mills to start churning. They want the excitement and speculation to devleop and build. Dropping the internals into an existing style or prototype case isn't alot of trouble either.

Well, yeah... if it were in first development it wouldn't be working well enough to be worth carrying around :lol
All i'm sayin' is, "$600 laptop wanna-be that can't multitask? Well, I can explain, see... wait a minute, what is this? It's a shiny new iPhone! Just look at how shiny it is!"
So it's more believeable that apple reversed the way it operates 180 degrees from everything it has done prior to this phone.

you can't buy publicity like this. I too am thinking marketing ploy. It was all over the news this morning where you'd normally see a 2 minute "Yup, there's a new iPhone coming out, big surprise" and it would be forgotten over the next commercial break.
This has gone viral so fast it caused whiplash.

That's just not apple though, it just doesn't look anything like anything they would ever do. They don't really need advertising, they got a rabid band of fools waiting to gobble up anything with the apple logo.

Exactly- Apple is a brand marketing company that also happens to make electronics. In marketing, innovation- keeping things fresh- is crucial. So, yes, I absolutely believe they'd do something they've never done before. You don't think they've got a team of people brainstorming new ways of getting viral campaigns out via high-profile blogs? They probably have more people working on that than they do on software.
To the one blog they threatened legal action and refused to give them an early review of the iPad?
Now their lawyer sends them an official request to return the item or else letter...
Apple doesn't need the viral campaign like this, they are more likely going to be on the losing end of a promotion like this if people suspect this kid may get fired for "losing the device."
There is too much negative with a campaign like this, Apple would never risk their brand on something this stupid. Hell we are all talking less about the device and more about if this was on purpose or if the kid is getting canned. That's too fucking negative for Apple.

Rider is right...no one cares. :lol
This isnt a ploy, its the real deal, some dude lost a field test phone and probably will loose his job too now that it has been opened up. This wasnt about the product getting out or showing off the new case (which was spotted in some old ipad leak pictures a few months back), this was one dudes big screw up.

Protohype (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Protohype&defid=4898823)
April 21, 2010 Urban Word of the Day
The process of leaking a prototype device to generate buzz about a product you don't quite yet have ready for market to a friendly tech website who will promote the gizmo well before it's ready to go.
Gizmodo's finding of that Apple iPhone 4G months before it's released is clearly a case of protohype.

Leaking photos and specs to guage consumer response is one thing, giving an actual prototype to a blog is completely different. Considering the reports of iPad prototypes being literally kept in secure rooms at the New York Times i cant see Apple completely changing their strategy for the iPhone 4.

Especially to the point where the unfriendly blog (apple threatened these guys before with C&D letters) had it for weeks and took the damn thing apart and documented every little chip in the device. This is releasing all the specs of the phone to the competition well ahead of the release date.
Are any of you guys still following this? Seems Gizmodo's editor got raided..

So, it turns out that Apple isn't thrilled about media companies dropping big bucks for its secret prototypes--on Friday night, California's Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team reportedly entered Gizmodo senior editor Jason Chen's residence with a warrant, seizing four computers, two servers, and a number of other incidentals (including flash drives, cameras, and cell phones).
