So last fall I noticed the sump pump was spitting out the over flow spout... a little more than I remember... hmmmm
This past winter, it was completely spitting out... made an icey mess in the backyard. But couldn't do shit about it with frozen ground.
So this is what I removed. The 22.5/45 elbows had tons of calcium build up inside... stopping the flow of water. Also, stupid Sked 30 thin crap!! Oh and classic dinner when working hard.

I hate digging... I think I mentioned that... especially in clay!

My new sked 40 thicker job is much better. Even added a full 3" clean out in line as well. All of which will be just barely barried.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/SumpPump004.jpg
The new crazy elbows... can't see it anymore, but there is a 30 to 40 bushing on the old pipe... going downward at a 45* angle downward into the neighbors yard and the larger storm drain...
Of coarse we tested the downward 45* to ensure good flow. Installed it all and test it as well.

I still hate digging.

My sump pump plumbing is all exposed. Straight up out of the basement along the wall, under the deck and then plain old sump pump hose into the yard. No digging required.

You know...after reading this I think mine is very similar to this. I admit I don't know much about a sump pump but since my house has one I guess I better look into it. I have what looks like a 55 gallon lid looking thing in the concrete floor in a room off of the garage with all of the pvc pipe coming in and out of it but I'm not sure where/which way it actually exits from there.
You say "sump pump hose into the yard"...as in an exposed hose laying on the ground ? I don't have that but after seeing this thread I'm going to look into it for sure.

Menards then, I am sure they have mexicans there too. You can get Mexicans at Lowes as well.

Yup, the PVC goes up and out of the house at a level right below the deck and then PVC out to the edge of the deck, from there it turns to sump pump hose out into the yard. it's flexable and easy to move. In the spring when my yard floods I add on to it to get the water out to the ditch. If I don't, the sump runs every 20 min because the ground is so saturated.

You don't go early enough then. You have to get there before they managers do before it opens. They run the Mexicans off.

Ok I've got a few of those type "hose endings" around the yard sticking out from hoses that have been buried so the one way out back must be for the sump pump then. The others are either drainage from the gutters and/or some retaining walls that we have on the property.

This is similar to what was at my old place. Pipe went from the sump pump through a hole in the wall of the basement and right out the side of the house connected to a hose where no one bothered to look. If you didn't know about it you never knew it was there.

Bucket?
Fix your fucking lawn.
Dude... its on the list. With the SIL, BIL, Niece and their 2 dogs... and this sump pump exiting into the yard, the lawn got trashed... I had over 300# of dog running around this yard for the past 6 months...
Still have to break up that concrete border and move out all those rocks. Don't like them. Then bring in a bunch of dirt, seed and straw over. But it has to be done in sections cause of the dogs. Muddy paws in the house won't be good.

I almost wished I had... luckily we found it near the house.
We don't have those up here.....
Exactly. Not like that.

For sure! Its always something! Luckily in the grand scheme $45 made this a cheap fix.
My sump pump plumbing is all exposed. Straight up out of the basement along the wall, under the deck and then plain old sump pump hose into the yard. No digging required.
That is janky though as you said... floods the yard. my parents house was that way. I still prefer this way even with this extra work. I figure it should be good for another 25yrs. Plus with the clean out and thicker sked pipe, I would just snake it with an electric snake.

It only happens in the spring of the year. Most of my neighbors pumps run almost constant. About 2 weeks of it running into the ditch (or however long it takes for the back yard to dry out) and then it's all good.

Found this pic. It is from about a month ago, this is why my sump pump runs at all. Once the water is gone, my house stays dry.

That is nuts. i would be doing whatever I had to, to fix that issue.
Cutty72
04-22-2010, 02:37 PM
Well to "fix" that issue would require hundreds of yards of fill, moving the garage pictured, and completely redoing everything in the back yard. I don't have that kind of money at this point, and the possibility of a move in the next few years makes it an uneconomical choice
Even after that it's not a for sure fix, because the water back up is caused by frozen culverts under the streets. Happens in the spring and within a week or so they let loose and it's gone.
I do plan on hauling in some fill to make it so less of the yard is flooded, however.
Oh, and this pic is nothing compared to last year!
Water was knee deep on me outside that walk in door. Up over 2 pieces of siding on the garage. My Cutlass was up on car ramps to stay dry!

What about field tiling draining into a ditch?
Cutty72
04-22-2010, 02:50 PM
Snow blocks all the ditches and the water is from the ditches backing up. If the culverts would flow normally, there would be no water in the back yard, so field tiling wouldn't help. Only thing that would prevent it would be to build it up.

Speaking of home ownership...I've had a company working on my foundation for 6 months. Spent $7500 and the thing is no better off than before. I've also had to do things during this process, like rip out the flooring in a laundry room and crossbrace the floor joist, tear off siding, replace rotted joist, etc. And like I said, the initial goal of leveling the back side of the house hasn't happened. So the wifey actually asked for our money back. The guy says........
YES!!! Can you fucking believe it??? He says they will come out and take the beams and posts back that they put under my house and cut me a check for my $7500. I've dealt with lots of folks in the construction business. This is just unheard of. Oh, and before you say that it will fuck up my house when he takes the beams out, remember that they didn't move the house a bit in the right direction. Also, they will be leaving all the additional footings they poured. Hell, I can put a hell of a lot of bracing under there using their footings.

Been there. Try having an underground spring running under your house. I had to drill holes in the concrete to keep the floor from cracking and had to dig a trench twice that length by hand

My last house I had to dig a french drain by hand under my house. 12" wide by 12" deep and hauled gravel in 5 gallon buckets. That is still my definition of hell
