I agree. Leave them the way they were born. I wouldn't crop anything on any breed of dog, unless it was because of health concerns. Uncropped Pitts probably keep the OMG IT'S A MEAN OLD PITBULL crowd at bay. I bet most of them wouldn't even recognize one as a pitbull.
Have you ever seen a Rottweiler with a tail? They look awesome!!! Ours came without a tail but the next one we are going to try to find a breeder that won't crop. With tail vs without tail - well the tail-less Rotties 'look' more aggressive.
On the flip side my rescue who always had her tail, had to have it amputated several years ago. Something bit it so badly (husband left the door open and they were loose all night) it couldn't be saved. It really changed the way she looks.

Dont forget, often a tail has to be removed for reasons other than just looks. Pits, Rots, Greyhounds, etc. those with "bald" tails sometimes have their tails docked to save on later medical bills. They get excited, and beat their tails constantly against things and this action can create blisters and boils that risk infection, (cant remember the technical term) etc. I'd still rather see animals with everything intact, but having worked in a clinic and dealt with a few infected cases, (EWW), I can see the reasoning, and its much worse for an adult than it is for a pup.
Brinks is too cute GM, even as big as he is you can still see the "puppy" in him. I love that mottled pattern he's got!

Brinks went running to the door (full length screen door only) barking like he's going to eat somebody. The mail man ran backwards about 20ft and wouldn't come any closer till I was outside and even then he would back up everytime he barked till I told Brinks to shut up (he did).

Heelers are insanely intelligent but they can be a little obsessed about things.
An uncle of mine had one that LOVED tires. On anything. He wouldnt go after them unless he had permission, but he'd take a kids bike away, attack 4 wheelers and even try to carry off a truck tire!

If any of you decide to visit Gas here in Michigan, be prepared. If you go to his house Brinks is completely of the opinion that you are there not to visit with the actual owners of the house but to play with and dish out much love to the dog. And just make sure you keep him at least at an arms reach for at least 5 minutes after he has hit the water bowl or you will be just as wet as his face.

Tuesday about 7pm, I had to put the best dog I've ever met, to rest. My boy Brinks, my son. The dog I held in my arms at two weeks and he wouldn't even go from wrist to elbow and barely had his eyes open.
He was the hardest dog Teen and I ever had to raise in our lives, but with that he gave us the greatest reward. I have never met a dog with such character and love for his family & friends. If you knew Brinks you were in his pack and he greeted you "nub & ass" wagging with such excitement just to be knocked over when he leaned into you was his greatest form of acceptance.
He was amazing and I'm a better dog person because of him. Everybody always wanted to know Brinks even through his mighty bark he loved to shout with. Hanging out in the garage wrenching on bikes, sitting on "Lookout Post 7", barking at people in "his world" while wagging his nub.
They say all the greats die young and pack a big life punch... never more true than with my boy Brinks. There is a huge part of my heart that was tore out today. He was only 5 years old and that was way too soon!!
Back story... so I don't have to explain it a zillion times...
For the last couple of weeks he's had a weird cough, we were treating it as such with our vet. It got worse so back into the vet. The second the doc heard his changed cough, I could see it in her face and straight to the xray machine they went. Brinks had enlarged heart with thin heart walls, congestive heart failure, and dilated cardiomyopathy. His lungs filled with fluid giving him his cough, his heart couldn't keep up because it was enlarged and weak. We ran more tests while we weight the options and prognosis... an EKG, and full blood work. He also had arrhythmia, which is a bad heart beat. He wasn't eating much, was going to need about 45 pills a day (which he doesn't like) and could drop from a heart attack any moment. It was no longer an IF but a when and a bad battle with his condition. He didn't deserve any of this and he was so tired from almost two weeks of this and not getting much sleep (him or us). He also didn't deserve to live like this and be in such pain and discomfort.
It took everything out of me, but Teen and I had to let him go.
It will bring tears to our eyes but please, next time we see you, share that great memory of Brinks with us, for we will miss him so very much.

I feel your pain. We put our Akita down three weeks ago, and I'm still not over it. He was 15, old for an Akita. I got him from the shelter 14 years ago. I think they can sense it when you save them. He had a black face in his youth, but it turned gray. I'd like to get another dog, but if he lives to 15, I'd be close to 80 when I would have to put him to sleep. My heart couldn't take that again.

Rescue an older dog. They could use a loving home, but also means you would spend less time with them.

That hurts just to think about. So sorry Chris.... :panic:
We had a golden go due to cancer everywhere. We got back from a vacation and my friend who had been watching said she had been acting weird, almost being non-responsive. She wouldn't even look at us, she just stared blankly at the ceiling. The cancer was in her bones, in her stomach/intestines, and had spread to her brain. Occasionally she would stumble outside and lay in the grass, but she would be there for 5-6 hours before she could muster the strength to stand back up and struggle back to the garage. One day she couldn't stand back up. We had to pick her up to get her to the garage. She was put down the next morning. Hard moment, so I get that feeling in my stomach...

:/ Sorry, man. That really is way too soon. At least he had a loving home for those short years. I'm tired of seeing all these strays running around here from people that just don't give a damn.

Damn man, really sorry to hear this. I wish I could have met him, he was such a beautiful animal and by all accounts I've read, the sweetest dog on the planet. RIP Brinks.
He was, and you truly missed out. I'm sorry about that.
Sorry to hear about Brinks. You made the correct choice but it really hurts.
At least you had an idea it was coming ( it still succks thought). We lost Mochi, our greater swiss mounatin dog the friday before thansgiving to gastric torsion. Doing OK to literally dying in my arms in a couple hours.
When the time is right, get another dog. Nobody but you will know when it's the right time.
We got another gsmd puppy ( Levi ) almost two weeks ago. He's not a replacement for my buddy, just a chance at another good four legged friend.
Sorry Chris
Jeff
excuse me, I have something in my eye .......
Thanks Jeff, but we didn't know. I took him there for a cough and figured pneumonia or bronchitis and he'd get a pill and/or shot and go home with me. Or in my mind, worse case a super expensive surgery and a week stay then back home good as new. I was at the vet's for over 4 hours first 3 by myself reporting to the wife over the phone. Not how I saw my day going...
Sorry to hear the news, Gas. Poor guy didn't live nearly long enough.
Not even close... we didn't even get half of what we should have...
That hurts just to think about. So sorry Chris.... :panic:

I've done the cancer stuff, intestinal, and bone. I feel bad for you. Brinks was fine (actually probably not) when we went on vacay. Got the cough a week after we got back and all down hill after...

Brinks is back home with a paw print from when he was about 7 weeks old, his oldest surviving toy bone, and a paw print just before we lost him. RIP Brinks, you honored me with being your dad.

The difference in paw prints is ridiculous. RIP Brinks.
So sad to hear...He was a gorgeous pup.
I lost my Golden to cancer, and my girl lost her Akita to the Marley and Me stomach turning disease. Def never easy.

Didn't realize it happened that quick Chris. Still not any easier even if you would know in advance. Nice work by Jeeps' wife Pam.
We have a paw print of Mochi that the vet did after he passed. Mochi's on the fireplace mantle with a couple of pics.

I wonder why Goldens are so prone to cancer?

My best friend had a grandson of comet from full house die of cancer. He was older, but his second golden who was a young female died of a broken heart aka refusing to eat or drink when her buddy died. His mom about had a breakdown. It does seem everyone here has a lot of cancer experiences with goldens.

Goldens are having a bunch more health problems now a days versus back when, idea is that there is too much breeding and in breeding.

And as you all know now, we paid to have brinks cremated. I had already looked into this for "way" down the road and I can not tell you how glad I did.

This place is super respectfull of your loved on and treats them like their own. Your pet gets tagged and carefully handled. Near to 24 hour turn aroun, no open trucks, and you can join your pet at their facility and take a tour. They do human and pet cremation there (two different units).
Before you get to that difficult spot, consider it and useing their services. A list of partcipating vets is on their site.

Oh God no....that is fucking terrible Gas Man, I'm so, so, so sorry for your loss. When I opened this thread today I actually clicked back a couple of pages to get caught up on all Brinks' hijinks and was feeling all happy looking at his pics....then I got caught up to the last page. So sad man.

Yeah he was one of coolest dogs ever, full of so much character.
I've spent all day today trying to shake off how much this all sucks... the house is so quiet it sucks! Took a half day at work to get some things done and try getting my mind off it. Cut the grass... didn't help. Went to dinner with the father in law... didn't help. Put some LEDs in the wife's new car, tinkering with that... seem to help. A buddy stopped by to check on me... helped a little but got me talking about it more.
This entire thing has been killing me...

It just takes time. Mary and I went thru this in Novemeber when we lost Mochi. We have a few pictures of Mochi around the box with his ashes. Good , "fun times" pictures.
Here's one that we had enlarged and framed

It doesn't bring back your buddy but it does help knowing that you did your part giving him a good life.

Damn Chris... I'm sorry to hear that... I will for ever remember hearing the beast bark and scare the ever loving shit out of me when I was there in 2010... and him throwing himself sideways into me (at waist hight) and nearly knocking me over.
please tell Teen if you both come to Denver, I will console her while you enjoy the mountain roads ;)

Jeff, I love the glasses on the ole pup. No not you silly!
Thanks gents.
Ebbs, the lean is the ultimate level of acceptance by Brinks. One of his character quirks that we loved.
That all being said... I'm really glad we went with the cremation. It gives a level of closure having him home. It's sad, but this is where he is suppose to be. I also think it is the most respect I can give to him in repayment to all he gave us.

I read through this thread for the first time today. While I was watching him grown up through the thread, I was afraid the last couple of pages were not going to be good. I fear the day when I lose my 2 Girls. (The oldest could pass for Logan's twin.)
RIP Brinks.

Thanks. It still sucks. I look at him on my desktop at work and it still F's with me. It's hard to believe he's not around anymore. That I can't get kisses or smell him, play with his floppy soft ears.
