View Full Version : What CAN'T you drive?

Ya, but your like most of us, no doubt. Grew up driving anything and everything.

That is pretty much how I grew up, operating anything and everything that had an engine or motor. From sneaking out on parent’s toys to borrowing earth movers without permission, I’ve figured out my share equipment without being shown the ropes.

To this day, if it has a visible set of controls, I’m confident that I can operate it with minimal collateral damage.

It blows me away to see people that can’t operate a boat, back a trailer or are afraid to drive anything with a manual transmission or bigger than a Toyota Camry. I could do all of that before I was 13. :idk:

What about you?

Any machinery that you can't or won't operate?

I've learned on the farm and in the military, there is a HUGE difference between someone being able to drive a piece of equipment, and one being able to OPERATE that piece of equipment.

I've encountered nothing so far that I can't drive. Never tried an earth mover though...but I'd like to.

The largest thing I ever drove was a 30' box truck with air brakes.

I'm pretty sure I could operate anything with hand controls, save a helicopter, from what I've seen. That would clearly take some practice just not to kill yourself.

No wrecks in anything, ever. Now that will change once I get to the track.

But seriously, i was driving a spec tuned 500hp SRT8 when I was 16. Never had a single problem. A friend recently had told me they have been in 4 accidents in their cage.... I was like :wtf:

Hell, I even fly a double engine turbo prop plane from time to time. And regularly drive a 52 ft yacht. Not that hard... well the plane kinda is.

Havent found anything yet, but theres still several areas I'd like to explore. Construction equipment is at the top of my list...and those transports they use at the ports that move the big rail road cars around.

I grew up very mechanically minded so not only can I drive/control anything but I can pretty much fix it too ...iPods aside. Boats, PWC, planes, bikes, trucks, go carts, you name it, I've driven it.

Semi's i've done, no biggy, but doubles suck.
I was in a blackhawk once, the pilot said if any of us could get it started we could fly it. I jumped in and started flipping switches that looked "appropriate" I suddenly had a firm hand on my shoulder and he yelled at me to get in the back. Apparently I was one switch away from firing it up!

Never been in a M1, but I putted around in a Bradly a bit. And the only train I have operated is dad's models.

Scrapers are fun though, turn 'em tight and slam on the brakes to set them on their nose and scare unsuspecting bystanders!

I'd love to fly one... still thinking about flight warrant so I can. I have less than a year to make a decision.

I haven't found anything yet that I can't drive.

Learned how to drive a boat at 3. The biggest boat I've piloted to date was a 45' yacht. And yes, I can dock it.

Took the training wheels off my bicycle at 4.

Started steering the Jeep from my dad's lap at 5 and using the gear shift shortly after that. I had to wait until I was about 7 before I could reach the pedals, but drove it solo as soon as I could.

Started working for an excavating company for a friend of mine at 15. Learned how to run all the equipment they had - dozers, loaders, backhoes, etc, etc . . . was even driving the dump truck on public roads at 15. Not even old enough to have my driver's license, let-alone my cdl

Helped my dad out at the coal mine with the REAL big heavy equipment starting at about 16 years old.

I have my private pilot's license.

. . . and I can ride a unicycle

I don't think there is anything that moves that I couldn't get to go where I wanted it to.

i know how semis work. Easy peasy. Just never got my hands on one. Almost in iraq...just not quite lol. i could teach a half retarded chimpanzee to drive an m1 in about an hour. Learning is easy. Being smooth, driving via periscope, driving via tc, and driving blind while swapping to the nvg peri are quite a bit more involved however

AH-64 Apache.

The question was drive, not start up.

I could fly a helicopter, however I would need to read the manual if I needed to do engine start. Maybe a handy card taped to my leg.
Same goes for planes, even though the bigger they are the more time I'd need to know where everything is.

Not saying it would be safe to fly with me but just saying.

Bingo!

I feel confident trying just about anything and welcome the opportunity. But I'm not arrogant enough to think that I'm amazing at driving things I've had virtually no practice on.

So what if it takes me more than one try to back in the trailer? It's not something I do all the time (maybe twice a year...if that) so I don't think it's a reflection of my ultimate ability.

So what?

So stay the fuck out of the way when those of us who know how to drive are backing our boats into the water, toy-haulers into the pits, trailer into the loading zone, etc.

I'm not directing my rant at you, Kel. It's expected.

You had me...then you lost me.

It takes me no more than 2 tries and it's not a question of completely blowing it, it's a matter of fixing it to get it to my liking.

I can't back up a trailer because I have a vagine? Not because I have NO practice with it. Not because it's not something I do every day. Not because I'm self taught. Because I have a vagine? :skep:

I must have a vagine too. I used to drive a truck every day for 3 years with a trailer, and could turn that thing around in the tightest of spaces, but since I have had an office job for the last 5 years, I would be very rusty with a trailer.

I love driving vagina! wait what was the question again?

I'll tell you what I can't drive. It's the speed limit. Can't do it. Makes my hands sweat. I get itchy and weave alot. Curves only make me want to go faster.

Hardest thing i've driven was a semi, when my dad owned one, way back when.

Turning, backing up, not a problem. Highway driving, fine.

Up and down steep hills? Thats fucking rough. But its more a matter of getting use to the gearing then anything else. But, I drove it very little. A few hundred miles at most. Im sure with a little work, it would be fine.

I learned to drive 966d loaders, dump trucks, backhoes at work. Easy as fuck, they drive themselves. I have not, however, a clue how to use the Crane truck, i've never been in it. But I am licensed for overhead cab cranes from work. Forklifts, bobcats, all that crap. Love it, and operate it all quite well.

Quads, dirtbikes, streetbikes, sleds... Not a problem. I can tear shit up on two wheels.

But I cant fucking drive a car for shit, and I fully admit it. If I had a really fast car, i'd be dead in days. Fine with a half ton truck. But I will never, ever figure out how to safely operate a car.

Our work trailer is a small single axle enclosed one and I hate backing it up. Now a 16ft trailer or something is the cats meow. Then if its a 5th wheel hookup with a flat bed trailer. O MY. Get me a towel cause I'm done playing with myself.

There's a lot of cotton growing here. So far I've seen two vehicles I'd like to drive. I don't know what they are called but here's one. You have know clue to how much I wanted to ride underneath one one time.

That pic is a sprayer. I rode under one once. It was my boss and there was a lot of traffic coming, and I needed to get things set up at the field before he got there.

The other piece of equipment you saw is a floater. They are used to apply either liquid or solid chemicals and fertilizer to crops without much ground compaction. They are a bitch to get out when you get them stuck.
