I caught a clip of the show the other night. My husband and I eat fairly healthy and want to maintain that for our daughter (children) when they get older. I used to be envious of the other kids at school that got twinkies and crap like that when I was a kid. My mother always packed us healthy lunches (she'd even wrap tomatoes apart from the sammies so they wouldn't get soggy). I think I had my first twinkie at 14 and was surprised at just how disgusting it was. Thank god my mother fed us well.....
All these kids with huge guts/boobs and muffin tops. I am still working on my post-pregger body after 9 months of popping out a kid and I look 100 x's better than half the 15 year olds I see. It's scary.
I'm taking care of more and more 20/30's with heart disease/chest pain/diabetes at work.
It's terrible what some parents do to themselves and their kids....

I've watched the show. The recurring theme is that school lunches are controlled by (drum roll), the government.
Biggest example: look at the milk choices: chocolate, strawberry (seriously?? YUCK), and plain ol' milk. When the flavored milk was taken away, everyone freaked out because the "Rules" say that they need to have the flavored milk because that way the kids will at least drink SOME kind of milk (and, apparently, nobody cares that the flavored milk has more sugar and sweeteners than a can of Pepsi/Coke).
Next biggest example: French fries are, again according to the "Rules," considered a VEGETABLE serving. Um, what??
The "Rules" are made by the bean counters. Changing one school system makes for good TV ratings but eventually the bean counters will have their way. You can't stop a hurricane by farting against the wind.
Any change needs to occur from the top down. The rules that impact Huntington impact schools here as well (local schools have the same choices of milk; french fries are considered a vegetable serving, etc). Violate the rules and the all powerful "Funding" gets taken away and schools can't afford that since they're already losing state funding in a lot of cases (they can't afford to lose federal funding for school lunches as well).
I admire what this guy is trying to do (though he occasionally comes across as pompous and elitist) but he's trying to take down an elephant with a tooth pick.

I watched the show when it debuted and was absolutely disgusted by both the people I saw on the show, and the entire school system. Everything from the attitudes right down to the mother that deep fries donuts for her kids for breakfast. I'm sorry, but how did you EVER think that was healthy and good for your children? :skep:
I know it's edited for TV but the fact remains that a lot of people are very very FAT and do nothing to help themselves.
When I lived in England, the question I got the most about America was about the size of the population. "Why are they so fat?" "Why is everyone so round?" "What do they feed them?"
How other's view you is not good. And it alarming that you can't see the need for change or how it even got here in the first place.
Kaneman

Fat people are usually reared from the segment of the population that breeds the quickest, I.E., dumb people. You're not going to change the minds or educate dumb people to differ from what they've been indoctrinated with. This is how they were raised, and they're still alive, so that's all the proof they'll ever need that their diets are perfectly healthy.
These people are after one thing when they shop for food, and that's value. They want as much food as possible for as little skrilla as possible. That's why their Walmart cart is full of soda, chips, twinkies and other creations whose mass production and cheap price is made possible by HCFS, with nary a vegetable in sight.
Someone who deep fries donuts for their fat kids every morning simply isn't intelligent enough to grasp a new concept.

There are much better reasons out there for not permitting bottled water in schools than a lack of calories. Broken clock; right twice a day.

How other's view you is not good. And it alarming that you can't see the need for change or how it even got here in the first place.
People are able to eat what they want and feed their kids what they want. Nutritional education is a good thing but it is no guarantee that individuals will ultimately make "correct" choices. Either way it is really none of my business what parents other than me choose to feed kids other than mine.
As for "how others view" us, most of the statistics I have seen give the UK's obesity rate at about 25% to America's rate of about 30%. The English really need to pull a bigger gap than that before stereotyping a nation.

Kinda like walking around with your underwear on over your clothes.
The rest of the world is starting to stare, point, and laugh.
Everywhere is getting chubbier as the McDiet spreads around the world. Countries are trying to fight it, but it's creeping into every where. Basically the shit Europe and Canada have been talking about our fatasses is starting to lose it's meaning when the obesity gap is closing so that we are all getting fat now. They can still blame us for spreading that shitty food to them though.

I was watching Jaime on CNN at the gym a couple weeks before the show aired. They ran a sneak peek of an episode where a kid eats corn dogs, pizza, or chicken nuggets in some combination for all three meals a day. It was just gross. The video below is part of that CNN episode with AC. Skip to 2:45 if you want to see the mother of the kid.

That's a common malady.
It is pretty common internationally as well. From what I have seen the English don't much care about what we think of them. Really the EU can also be included in that. China obviously doesn't give a shit. Mexico actively encourages their citizens to illegally come across our borders for a "better" life so they are pretty much out. I think the only reason you all take notice is because of some inferiority complex that seems to have been institutionalized nationally to some degree.

I saw one episode of this show - it was the one where he brings in several kids and shows them how they make chicken nuggets. Even after showing them just how nasty that shit is, he asked the kids if they still wanted to eat the nuggets and they all raised their hands.

Show them how they make hamburger, from start to finish, and they'd likely never eat beef again so that isn't a very good test ;)

Actually that's not either. My son's been there when the deer died, took it to the processor and watched it gutted. His only comment was, "COOL!" And he eats it..

Oliver said. “Now I know that the distribution channel that feeds all of these schools and these kids can actually handle fresh food.” :wtfru:

Inferiority complex? Maybe for some. But for the most part it's just Americans beating their chests until they think everyone else has an inferiority complex.
Canada's getting fatter by the minute too. I can't say I noticed it as much in Europe, but they're probably not far behind.
These kids though, I mean, they didn't even know what a tomato was!!!
And as for caring what other parents feed their kids? It's called global wellbeing and caring about something bigger than yourself. A decidedly UN-American trait.

"Global wellbeing and caring about something bigger than yourself" in this case seems to mean telling others what you think they should do, but you can call it what you will. I call it others sticking their noses in to my business. I prefer if they don't do it and I extend the same courtesy as much as possible in return.

I usually just make fun of ya'll just to joke around and I think a lot of people here do it for the same reason.
We don't go around judging Canada, probably 99% of the time we don't even care what's happening outside of our little bubbles. You may want to think globally, but a lot of us just want to enjoy the little time we get to spend living life instead of worrying about all that crap. It might be selfish, but we are selfish so screw you and Canada.

I don't blame obesity on the school. Can we get fucking serious for a moment? My kids didn't have ANY junk food until they met Louie...and they've still only had a limited amount. It's up to the PARENT to raise their own children - counting on someone else to raise them? Don't fucking HAVE kids. I agree that food offered in schools is crap - that's why my kids bring their lunch every. single. day. And if parents wouldn't blindly expect other people to provide for their kids, if they PARTICIPATED in their kid's life even when they're at school, they could ask for - no - DEMAND change in foods offered.
I don't blame the school. I don't even blame the government (this time). And I did NOT google naked shoveling.
It's up to parents to teach their children the basics. Would you expect your first grader to learn how to shower or brush their teeth (or tooth in England)? Would you expect them to teach them religion or morals? Would you allow them to be threir only source of informtion????
Hell no. That's MY responsibility and I take them seriously. School is there for academics. And maybe if they could concentrate more on that....well, now I'm just talking crazy talk.
