Cool tent that doesn't use any poles and packs really really small.

I don't camp while on bike trips anymore. I've done it twice, once on the north rim of the Grand Canyon.

The romance of motorcycle camping sounds alot better than it is in real life.

After riding 600 miles a day, the last thing I want to go is dig out my camping gear, put up a tent, roll out a sleeping bag, etc etc.

I'll take a nice hotel room, a restaurant next door, and a steak with a tasty beverage thanks.

Overnight camping isn't out, but not on my annual long trips.

I rode to Sturgis on my ZX-10R and camped in the Black Hills Forest for a week. My tent was about 30' away from a rushing stream. Normally, I'd have a hard time sleeping in a tent. But, I was so exhausted every day from all the riding that I slept like a baby and woke up feeling great!

It was the most fun I ever had on my bike.

Oh yeah, and your link is broken.

Motorcycle camping is way over rated.

I've found there really is no substitute for lightweight backpacking gear. My bike is loaded up right now for another 3 day camping trip and EVERYTHING fits in my little saddlebags.

I kick around the idea of picking up a used dual sport bike for just this purpose.....load the bike up...ride out into free range land after work on a Friday...and ride home again sometime Sunday.

I haven't made the dream a reality yet....but the day is getting closer.

I got tired of all my gear getting wet and just picked up the new Wolfman Expedition Dry Line saddlebags.

neat idea - as far as the motorcycle camping thing: been there, done that. I'm good thanks. I'll stay at a Hilton or even a Holiday Inn Express while you fight off damp and bugs, thanks.

Hilton doesn't have a view like this to wake up to . . .

Motorcycle camping is soooooo much better than staying in a stuffy hotel.

For someone who might only ride a couple hundred miles a day, I might agree with you. (not saying you do or did, I'm talking about in general)

When I tour, I'll usually lay down a minimum of 500 miles, and I just don't feel like messing with camping gear at that point. Food, beer, and bed. Usually in that order.

You're just a wuss, G

I might not get in 500 miles, but I'll bet my days are longer and harder than yours and I'd still MUCH rather camp than hole up in some hotel room.

Does touring at that kind of pace ever stop feeling "fun" and start feeling like "work" for you? Like the destination is more important than the journey kind of thing?

You have FAR more touring experience than I do...but the touring I've done I've prefered a pace around 250-300 miles a day...a full day of riding but with time enough to enjoy the trip along the way.

This. I've had fun both ways-camping and hotels. Depends on the crew I'm riding with.

Haha! I definitely believe that your days are harder. Much harsher terrain. I just know how I like to tour, that's all. :D

I guess it depends on what you're used to. It doesn't feel like *work* to me until I cross the 800 mile threshold in a day. 250-300 miles? I'll do that much distance before stopping for breakfast half the time.

The journey is always of utmost importance. Hell, I've managed to stop and take pictures even on my Iron Butt rides. Just because you're laying down a lot of miles doesn't mean you are rushing. It's all in time management, and I've gotten pretty good at my own time management.

I'm not knocking you at all...and I don't doubt for a minute that you have it down cold...you've done quite a bit more touring than I have. I was just curious if that kind of mileage started wearing on you. I've done a 500 mile day once...more out of necessity than desire...and I was left feeling like I didn't want to do another 500 mile day again any time soon. :lmao:

I've acquired quite a few "over the road enhancements" for my bike since that day...windscreen...better luggage instead of a backpack etc so it might be different now. I'll do about a 250 mile day Friday night after work...and have a 280 mile loop through the Ozarks lined up for Saturday. Four States in 3 days..should be a good time. :rockwoot:

Maybe it's my lack of appropriate physical conditioning or just that I've never had a properly outfitted bike, but for me even the amount of miles it takes to get out of Texas from where I am is as many as I care to spend on the road.
Camping in addition to that?
Meh... I like the 'charm' of the outdoors, but I like a soft mattress under me and a little air conditioning way more. :nee:

I have never been camping. And as much as I like to think that I am tough, who I am I kidding? I'll take a hotel room please, with a pillowtop mattress. Preferably at the Mandarin Oriental.

Absolutely this! :)

Although I do like to camp and have done it on numerous motorcycling trips. If the trip is longer than a few days...give me a nice hotel.
