My Pops is a big scanner (and everything else electronic) guy, and he just upgraded his so I got his hand me down. Its a Uniden BC898T...and I have no fucking clue what to do with it.
Seriously, I spent all day yesterday on Radioreference.com and other scanner forums trying to figure this out, but these guys are speaking a different language. I used the database to program 15 local frequencies into Bank A...and it seems to be doing ok, but I feel like I'm missing a lot. I'm looking for some advice on how to get started in this hobby.
BTW, there are A LOT of drunk drivers around here, and I live in a fairly small town. I heard 3 DWI arrests yesterday at locations within a 5 mile radius to my house.

Get the codes from your locale and just listen to local cops for a while, then move to Sherrifs. I used to listen when I lived in Michigan and we got codes, explanations and lingo from officers.

Got that, all the local cops are in here. But Radioreference lists a code for "police talk-around" which I'm guessing is a cop to cop frequency....but it never picks anything up on it.

Apparently someone in a red honda civic with ground effects and chrome rims tried to pass counterfeit money at the Autozone across the street. This subject is known to the police as "the one we found asleep in the culvert that day" and with the "weird birthmark on his face".

much of their transmission is now done digitally so you don't get it.

Fort Worth area. You can buy digital scanners now too, even most of the ones who use digital nationwide go unencrypted.
According to what I've been reading on the scanner forums anyway. I know fuck all what I'm talking about.
