Isn't this a repost? Maybe on another site.

Close call, but the dude would not have gone off the road if he would have been looking into the corner and not in the dirt.

Ouch - I've never been a huge fan of crossing the double yellow in a blind corner myself. That could have ended far, far worse. 101 you're probably right but I can honestly say I don't think I'd have the presence of mind to keep looking through the turn after almost being head-on'd. More like "Holy F**K" followed by "WTF WAS THAT?!" then "I'm alive! I'm alive!" then "Oh SHHH...."

Although if you look the guy did know to pull his knee in and cock his head to the right, right before he went off the road

Right.

Over the yellow in a blind is one thing. Passing a car is another. Wow street riding freaks me out....

Those guys are very well experienced, it was a quick decision. Maybe a little less hesitation to go in the dirt would of resulted in impact. Busting their balls for taking quick action to miss a head on accident is pretty stupid.

Cliff notes:

Some jackass at the gap passes a van on a blind corner crossing the double yellow running two KTM SM's off the road barely missing one guy who hit the oncoming bike's mirror with his elbow.

Trip was the oncoming guy that passed the van...

I'm with some of you, I avoid passing on a double yellow and have a severe aversion to passing in blind corners in general. I kills me at the Gap but oh well...:idk:

1. Karma for the guy who crashed. Cross the double yellow and eventually double yellow crosses you.
2. Asshole on the cruiser probably told his buddies that some whackjob on a dirt bike almost crashed into him.

The guy passing the van deserves a punch in the face. Yep an ignorant reaction to an ignorant action but yep...he deserves it.

That's my greatest fear at the Gap...well, my second greatest, my GREATEST is being the dumbass that makes a pass like that and causes someone else to crash! That guy probably couldn't sleep for a while wondering if the guy lived or was severely injured.:panic:

Agreed....

I would have had a lot more sympathy for him had he not done the exact same thing a corner or two earlier. Van or no van, STAY IN YOUR FUCKING LANE BEFORE YOU KILL SOMEONE!!

I hear ya. You could be right about how he felt afterwards too. Yeah my big fear is someone in my lane...especially a cager since they take up so mush room. My other fear is running off of the mountain. I have passed on a double yellow (not at the Gap) BUT when I had more clearance than that and have never almost hit someone or forced them to take evasive action.

I am sure 99% of the people on this board would cross the double yellow at the gap. Mainly to pass slow cagers and harleys.

Maybe but if they caused a close call or worse they would deserve the punch in the face I mentioned...me included.

Oh I am sure you would get extremely bored with some of the speeds cagers do through there. 10 mph in summer heat isn't fun.

There are plenty of places a motorcycle can overtake without much care up there. I don't really mind the people who have to take the race line through nonblind corners like that guy did there (I do it on the fiddy up there at night because you can see cars/bikes coming due to headlights), it's the people who attempt shit like the guy that was in the other lane in a blind corner that shit gets ugly.

Perhaps.

When and where I ride there is little risk of being trapped behind anyone for any length of time.

Well in this case the where is set, it's not dependent on your location of choosing. It's deals gap and pretty much the only time you will find that you won't get held up is in the cover of darkness. Even then you can get a little old grandma coming back from maryville going home.

Most people don't travel here to ride to go for a nice slow easy pace.

I normally ride in the morning, around sunrise. How is the traffic then?

Yeah, but that's not why they were crossing the double yellow earlier. I totally get the difference between what they were doing, and what the moron passing the van was doing. But I still think gratuitous double-yellow-crossing is jackassery.

You will have a lot of local commuters, people who go into TN for work. Some of them will be fast and some will be slow.

Forgot to add...
I do just about all my riding over the weekend, leaving the house right before sunrise (so I don't have the sun in my eyes as I ride out to my "spots".)

I've stayed away from the gap because its a long ass ride and I don't have the time to spare to spend a few days down there.

If I were single I would.

Trip
05-26-2010, 03:14 PM
Yeah, I understand. I stay away during certain rallys and bear hunting season, I choose my times that are better for traffic, but I still cross the double yellow. It would get boring quick if I didn't.

8am to 8pm on the NC side only. It's pretty much a closed course track with 2 highway patrols to watch out for.
