Get ready for gas prices to go up.
Ah doom and gloom... I'm sure you're right but I paid $2.49 yesterday!:rockwoot: I have no doubt that these dirt bag oil companies will use this as an excuse to raise today's gas prices even though we don't get that much oil from there, even though it hasn't impacted their reserves yet, even though I'm sure that this won't last too long... The biggest tree hugger in the world still drives their Prius to work either using gas made from oil or electricity made from coal that was transported to the power plant on a diesel train... It's easy for them to pull this now that gas prices are low, wait until they hit $4-5 per gallon. The same poor, black folks that praised his election like the Israelites praised Moses, will be calling for Obama's head! Wait and see...

Exactly.
I shouldn't be surprised that all drilling was halted, they are siting how it's dangerous. Like it wasn't before?

BP has an expensive problem. Why rush to fix it and take the loss when you can use it for leverage to get a price hike and maybe some Fed funding for the inevitable clean up lawsuits??

Another opportunity to take steps away from oil.
Maybe if BP had a clue how to stop oil from gushing into the Gulf people would be more receptive to their drilling.

Or wait until someone else fixes it. Hell when a movie star can do a better job than a whole company, why would they want to fix it.

totally ok for government to do it though

to what? we arent allowed to do new nukes. wind and solar are thusfar a joke (and will always be limited due to their reactive nature) and B.O. made it damn clear hes not a fan of coal. not forgetting that oil is literally in everything we use, make and wear

maybe if those people hadnt forced them to drill in the fucking abyss they'd be able to shut it down.

Dave, it isn't "people" so much as it inertia of big money. People are sheep: they will take the path of least resistance. Gas-powered cars are there, so people drive them. If something else were just as easily and cheaply available, people would use that instead.
Large entities like oil companies had the monopoly on tranportation, power, heat, manufacturing, etc for so long that it's extremely difficult to change it.
Hell, try to buy something different from the things supported by the oil industry and you'll find that it's more expensive rather than less.
History has shown that it takes a Revolution to break free of a huge controlling entity. Problem is, for the first time that controlling entity is an industry rather than a government. How does one revolt againt that? You can boycot stuff but the oil industry is into just about everything so short of living in the stone age, it takes something big to MAKE the change happen.
Unfortunately, even this won't force change. Best it will do is shake things up for a while. But in the aftermath, maybe (just maybe) we will see some alternatives available.
Thing is, guess who will drive those different things in order to drive profits? The only group with the huge reserves of money available to fund such a change: Oil companies. That means that the next wave of "stuff" will most likely be only a marginal improvement from plain 'ol oil.
Baaaaaaah. Baaaaaaah.

Now that corporations are entities in the eyes of the supreme court, they vote with their money, which means they will be the government.
Change will take a revolution.

I think part of what Dave is saying, and I agree with, is that the tree huggers were the ones that forced the oil companies to drill beneath the ocean in the first place. Aren't there several other places on dry land, in this country, that contain oil but they aren't allowed to touch? I seem to remember a huge oil deposit being found in Utah (or somewhere like that) and the EPA won't let them drill. Of course, there's the deal in Alaska as well....:idk: I'm no expert but I doubt that this would have been as big a problem in Anwr.

Your right Amber. The top fill technique is a tried and true thing when done on land. Everywhere from West Texas to Saudi Arabia. And blow out preventers are simpler and work better when their controls are not cabled 5 miles from the unit.

i didnt say it was hard, i said it was impossible. the tech doesnt exist, its not even close. you ever see an ev1 on the street? i never did, it wouldnt make it here. i expect the leaf to be similarly pathetic.

Do you know WHY?? Exxon bought the battery technology. The EV1's were all lease only, and taken from their owners. They ALL wanted to buy them, and weren't allowed. The technology is there, it's just owned by the oil industry....

Here's what we do.
Gather up all the oil company "leaders" and all the heads in Washington
Then we have a good ole' Lynching then we can :x: Hanged bodies!
And that's how this revolution will happen
with A lot of rope:rockwoot:

and when the techology was purchased the continued development was stopped. You don't find that curious?
I'm just frustrated by the ignorance. My friends calling to boycott BP, the public that just freaks out on reaction, all of it. Knee-jerk is the WORST. No one wants it in their back yard, so they went somewhere else. I told y'all it would take months - that was my husband's estimate. Look at that, months...

big oil's intent was most likely exactly what you think, however isint it far more likely that gm independantly decided that the car was not at that time viable/profitable and acted in its best interests to recoup losses and limit their liability?
im actually counting on morons pulling that, cant wait for local stations to cut prices

Oh, I don't like tinfoil hats. I'm not a fan and don't look good in them  I just find it really curious.
It was only introduced in LA. And then, the reason cited by GM was "lack of consumer interest." Even when EVERY driver that had one wanted to purchase and formed a coilition to stop the destruction of the cars. They offered GM more than retail in one big check for the remaining cars - to be turned down. All the cars were taken to GM's test track and crushed [where they still remain].
Back to the thread topic. I'm sad this happened to BP. It's part of the law of averages and something was BOUND to happen. They are the largest offshore agency in the world - if someone was going to have something happen, it would be them. It's also curious to me that Schlumberger and TransOcean aren't anywhere in the news.....
I see TransOcean all over the news. It was the "TransOcean rig owned by BP" for a while at the beginning.

There is still one left but I think its just the body. I thing the engine, battery and so on were removed.

there were a lot more than one survivor, a handful got handed to museums and at least one was restored to driveable status. i understand gm was rather upset about that but so would i if i was concerned id have to continue making parts for a car that cost 80 grand each to build

When you've lived in the city that produces the most oil in Texas,.........................makes you wanna fucking own one of those companies. LOL
Wish I could find that funny clip of oil being like crack.
To be precise, pumping of existing wells is still happening. Exploratory drilling for new wells has been halted.

/looks up/ Yup, all drilling. Because drilling is the "dangerous" part.

I hope slumberger isnt in the news my brother works for them, and he owes me money.
In all seriousness, how bad do you think this disaster would be if it happened in some 3rd world country? After drilling is permanently stopped in the gulf how many oil spills do you think will take place on 10k foot water? How many of them do you think will be properly taken care of when they leak?

You clearly haven't ever seen the Mexican oil-field in the gulf... it's the only place my husband has seen the ocean on fire continuously without someone trying to put the fire out.

Look at the intentional oil spill created by Iraq after the first Gulf War or the Pemex oil spill (similar to the current spill) from 1979 for comparisons.
