ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. -- A Metro Atlanta police chief, who turned himself in for parking illegally, paid a nearly $300 fine.

Chief Gene Wilson admitted he parked in a handicapped spot at a Conyers Chik-Fil-A. Wilson told Channel 2’s Diana Davis he realized he parked illegally after getting breakfast at the restaurant on Highway 138.

“I come back outside, and there is the handicapped parking sign with my city police car sitting right in it, and I’m thinking I didn’t do this, but I did,” Wilson said.

The chief claimed he didn’t notice the markings or the posted sign. The chief told Davis the new light bar on his car blocked his view. He drove back to headquarters and had another officer write him the ticket. It carried a $280 fine. Wilson also apologized in a letter to the newspaper.

“I thought that was great. It shows that he took responsibility for his wrong action,” said Conyers resident Brian Griffith.

This was not the first time the chief turned himself in. He also received a ticket for running a red light while working in Sandy Springs.

“I hope I don’t get to the point where I have a major write me a ticket. I might have to arrest myself, I don’t know,” Wilson said.

The chief told Davis he wanted to send a message that his department takes parking in a disabled spot without a permit very seriously. According to Wilson, anybody caught doing it, including police, will get a ticket.

Regardless of his reasons that's a pretty stand-up thing to do.

I agree. If only more officers were so upstanding, with respect to their own behaviour in such cases.

Agreed...unless of course he's covering something else up and used this as a diversion.

Fixed.

Fixed.

Lets be real. When you go above the speed limit are you going to turn yourself in? No, so don't expect a cop to.

Maybe, just maybe, if they listened to the studies that they've called for at least 3 times that I know of, and set the speed limits at the 85 percentile, I don't think speeding would be much of an issue at all...for anyone.

Maybe you have an point that sucks less?

Perhaps cops should set the example then, by NOT speeding? ;)

Shhh...you're making sense.

It's a congenital defect. For the past few months I've apparently been debating with a 'law and order' type author, on a local board, who thinks "police powers good, personal liberties bad."

People like to side with law enforcement, in hopes that they'll receive the benefits of being "down with the team"

It's kind of like being in high school, when you agreed with what the cool people were saying, so that their "cool halo" would cover you as well.

That's a human defect...one I consciously work to overcome (I don't have to work too hard, as an independent thinker, though).

Well this guy apparently wrote a biography of our Provincial police chief, who thinks that he's in charge of the 1929 Chicago Police Department.

'Round here being someone who thinks for himself gets you branded as a cop hater one day, then a cop suck-up the next.

pretty easy to be "upstanding" when it only costs a little money. (insurance doesn't increase for that ticket nor do you lose points.) and in return you get to put your name out in the media as a "good guy".

I'd be pissed if they all stopped speeding. Cops going the speed limit fucks up traffic more than a Florida Buick convention. People won't pass a cop, even if they were doing 25 on an interstate.

And speaking of handicapped spots, I rarely see someone use them who is actually handicapped. They may have a tag but I've seen them park at my gym to get on the treadmill and run me into the ground.

You're right that most people won't pass a cop, no matter what lane he's in or what speed he's doing. I routinely pass cops at 10-15 Khm over the limit, on 100 Kmh highways.

Same here. I will pass a cop all day long if they are going under the limit with no lights on.

I guess there's no shortage of assholes, is there?

Oddly, I walk with some difficulty, and I would probably qualify for plates, yet on principles I choose to leave such things for people worse off than me...perhaps those with wheels...but whatever...

Usually people who do need it won't park there becuase they know for a lot of them exercise (even a walk from the back of a Walmart parking lot) is what will help their recovery time or just keep them active.

Now if your fat ass weighs 400lbs or more and you use a rascal to move your lard ass around then you should be forced by law under the policing powers of government to park at least a mile away. Being a fat ass shouldn't be a handicap. If someone goes through 3 packs of smokes a day do we give them a tag so they can make it into the store easier because of their emphysema? Fat asses are usually the people I see use handicapped spots.

Absolutely and can't stand to get behind people that won't. Looks like a freakin' NASCAR race going down the interstate and the cop is the pace car. :wtfru:

Well we have photo radar here, so I set the cruise for 9mph over the posted limit. If it isn't enough to trigger the camera, I figure it isn't enough to get pulled over for by an actual human.
Time will tell if I am wrong on this...
