So despite the name... the Blackberry Storm is less than water resistant. One of the joys of pool ownership apparently is ruining your phone because you're a dumbass and forgot to take it out of your pocket....

So, it's a $50 detuctible to claim in on insurance... so I might as well just get a different fucking phone... I hated this thing anyway. Here's what I'm looking at:

Palm Pre Plus (http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/palm-pre-plus-verizon/4505-6452_7-33941250.html)

HTC Droid Eris (http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/htc-droid-eris-verizon/4505-6452_7-33799594.html)

Samsung Omnia II (http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/samsung-omnia-ii-verizon/4505-6452_7-33686174.html)

LG Ally (http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/lg-ally-verizon-wireless/4505-6452_7-34093840.html)

Also thinking about replacing the Mrs' Blackberry Curve with the HTC Ozone (http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/htc-ozone-verizon-wireless/4505-6452_7-33703085.html)... or maybe just get her the newer Curve. thoughts?

Be sure to tell me the WHY behind your decision... I'm gonna order the new phone tomorrow or something...

The eris is a pretty good mid range android phone. Its not an evo or a droid but its better than the palm which is thee only other phone I have experience with on your list

Did you already talk to Verizon about it? I thought most phone insurance deals required you to get the same phone you had previously as long as it is still available.

The storm is waterproof. I have two trips down a river to prove it on mine.

That's IF you decide to use it... I'd rather spend the same $50 and get a phone that I'll actually like.

Well jump into a swimming pool for like 5 minutes. Then we'll talk.

Don't know about 5 minutes, but my little adventures in almost drowning during fly fishing weren't exactly short.

My best friend has the Palm Pre. I like the thing, but unless you have fingers like a 13 year old cheerleader... no fucking way.

My other buddy has the Eris. Relatively fast. Screen is responsive and bright. Of course no qwerty keyboard. He dropped it once while getting on his 636 and broke it..... pass.

Between the other two, its really what you are looking for. One has the qwerty and the other has the "swipe" texting. The LG phones are always known for reliability and durability. But recently I switched to the Samsung Rogue... which is basically the un-smartphone version of the Omnia, and I LOVE this fucking phone. Those WXGA amoled screens are fantastic.

doesn't matter if the storm was waterproof or not... it's a fucking pile of shit!

don't have any experience or opinion on your provided choices... but I fucking love my moto Droid... Rooted it the other day... now running Foyo over clocked to 1ghz but down to 250mhz when on stand by... battery lasts forever if I'm not using it, fucking awesome...

swype is still in beta form, but it is available on their website, and it takes 2 seconds to put it on an eris. I have it on my mytouch and love it, its almost a perfect substitute for a hard keyboard, but it does make typing faster unless i dont swype over the right letters, then it never understnads the word you are going for

Yes, it being a pile of shit is a much better reason to be rid of it than water damage. Water damage will make the phone better because it will make you get rid of it faster.

Truth...

As far as broken screens on the Eris goes... I met a guy yesterday who had one and had a kickass case for it... dropped it hundreds of times, no problem. Dropped it once without the case, cracked screen... however, it still works.

I might just say fuck off to Verizon entirely the more I think about it. T-Mobile gets good coverage in the cities I'm most likely to be in... Vegas, Columbus, and here... Plus they don't mandate a fucking $30/mo charge for smartphone data plans... and with the phones with WiFi, I wouldn't need that shit most of the time anyway.

Right now I pay $150/mo for two Blackberry's which includes unlimited data and 250 text messages per phone... and only 700 minutes between the two.

You should check out Sprint. I'm most likely going to them in a few months when my ATT contract is up.

I hate Sprint and their service isn't the greatest in the places I am most likely to be...

I pay 2/3 of your amount for unlimited texts, unlimited data, and around the same minutes with tmobile

Ok, so I just decided to get a smartphone for my birthday next week. I ran to Verizon in the last half hour just for shits n giggles. I grabbed an employee and began talking over smart phones.

Palms - Palm OS very streamlined, good multiple email intigration, yet again, keyboard for 13 year old girls.

Microsoft OS - Business upfront, play in the back

Android OS - Play upfront, business in the back

After sitting and playing with all of those phones that you mentioned, there really is no choice. It is the Eris. Especially with the Eris' upgrade to Android 2.1. Coming in second would be the Palm. I think the Ally drops to third because it is very boring. The qwerty keyboard is fantastic, but other than that, it is very uninspiring. Beasically, the salesman said that the Ally is targeted as an entry level smartphone. And I'm not going to deny that when Android 2.1 is trying to run through a 600 Mhz processor. And the design is very "early 2000's"... doesnt give me a phone bone like the other Androids do. In last place would be the Samsung. I love the design of the phone, and the swipe texting, but the salesman shot me down real fast. He said he would never ever recommend that phone to ANYBODY. He says contrary to almost all Samsung phones, this thing is a giagantic pile of shit. Tons of problems. Too bad, because I really like the thing.
