Went on a 15 miles journey down the Susquehanna River - North Branch last weekend. I've been doing this for about 15 years with my Dad. This is the 2nd year I took my dog.
The put-in spot. I was in the river about 10 feet from shore, thanks to a very excited 4 y.o. Yellow Lab named Manny.

Camp site on day 1. We had 14 boats, 28 ppl. So clearly this is only part of the group.

A very tired dog. He got out in the swift current of the river and wound up about 200 yards down river. Then had to swim up river to get back to the island. But he's one hell of a water dog.

I did a three day canoe trip on the Susquahana probably 30 miles north of Harrisburg when I was a kid (over 20 years ago). Looks like you all had a good time, especially Manny.

Explains why everyone looks so comfortable.
Down here you could cook a turkey in the tent between noon and 6pm from now until early September.
My Memorial Day weekend camping adventure was as hot as I can stand it in a non-climate controlled setting.

@Adeptus. It was pretty damn hot. I was sweating my ass off in the tent. Upper 80s all weekend...compared to the low 90s it was back home. All in all it was great weather.
Gas. You should come out and do the trip with me some year.
@ebbs. I know a few good spots around here.
yes, but then he'd have to actually go to PA...;)
great pics!! Manny is my favorite part!! :D I'm bringing him treats when we come out next month. What's his favorite milkbone flavor?

Thanks Rae. I love this pup. He's laying beside me chewing a bone right now. He loves being on the water. He even attempted a rescue mission for a ýoungster who was swimming but splashing and making a ton of noise.

Great pics, can tell you guys had a blast just from them. We're trying to get our pup to jump in my grandparent's pool, but he's too scared. If you, or anyone else, have any tips they'd be appreciated. My last lab loved the water even though we could only fill up a baby pool for him. That's awesome he tried to rescue the kid. Great pal you got there.
As a side.. I thought there was something on my screen when I looked at that fucked up y you typed..

Cool pics :dthumb: I miss canoeing, we used to all the time when I was a kid. We live in Kingsland GA when I was in second and third grade and used to canoe the Okifenokee all the time. The heat didn't bother me back then but it sure does now :p

I've canoed and catfished on the Susquehana a few times(Maryland part), quite a few years ago. Legend has it, they have monster size catfish near the dam.
I want to canoe the 'hooch, since it is less than a mile away

Man, that brings back some memories. I did the 50 miler in the Boy Scouts when i was a kid on the Rifle River here in Michigan. I love canoeing. I would need to buy two boats though if I were to take my family. Perhaps I will have to get back with the Scout troop as a leader and participate that way. Loved those trips when I was a kid. I hope my son digs the scouts. Hard to find kids that like that shit but mostly has to do with the activity of the Troop. Boring troop and no one sticks around.:dthumb:

When Manny was about a year old we were at the beach. My BiL's dog was diving in the pool and having a good time. Manny was whining b/c he was afraid to jump in the water.
I picked him up and tossed his ass in the deep end of the pool. My wife started freaking out b/c the dog was sinking. After a few seconds his instincts took over and he figured out how to swim.
Now, I can't keep him out of the water. He loves it. Was it the best way to introduce him to swimming? Maybe not...but it worked.
And I dont know how that symbol showed up above the "Y"...I was typing from my Blackberry.

Good bass fishing up this way. Craw dads are king for bait....live or lure.

It also had a lot to do with a somewhat inexperienced partner as well. But the water temp was nice and it was hot out. So not a big deal.

I've taken my little one on several kayaking trips, she loves it and will swim from me to Razor all day long. We havent taken the new pup out yet, I think she'll love it, but she's about 60 pounds of energy and a potential accident waiting to happen. I DONT like ending up in the river unless I do it myself.

Thanks man. He is a great dog. He laid in the front of the boat when he wasnt swimming. Either had his head resting on my lap or out the front of the boat.
Here's more pics of the dog doing what he loves:

Lilly is 60ish pounds now too, and I imagine if I tried to get her in a small boat it'd be carnage and strife and watery doom in short order.

 I think thats why the hubby is so reluctant to take her on our trips! She's still growing too, so depending on how big she gets, we'll see.
We plan on getting a pair of kayaks for ourselves sometime, but Im with you, too many hobbies, too little time!

sounds like you're in a similar situation to mine. i have a little toy poodle who loves to go in the kayak. she sits on the deck and jumps off to swim. the other one i have is a near 60 pound boxer who hates water. going to be fun convincing her that a ride in the canoe is ok. wouldn't even think of bringing her out with the kayaks.
