Craziest part is, it's still holding air. I need a good tire gauge (and a wash, chain lube, and adjustment) before I ride it again, but I think the belts deflected the nail without letting it actually puncture. I couldn't get the licorice stick repair down through the path of the nail, but there's no hissing. I still plan to get new tires as soon as I can afford to, and before any long/fast rides. But at least I don't have to go out and buy cheap shit tires RIGHT NOW.

Oh no not this debate again...:panic: OMG what is the worst case scenario here? He'll get a flat. That's it, there will be no sudden tire failures or what not. He is right, the belts obviously deflected the nail and it never pierced anything but the tread that gets worn off anyway. See if you can get some rubber cement in there just for the heck of it and ride on.:rockwoot:

Phenix_Rider
06-26-2010, 03:22 PM
It's only through the rubber. Those angles don't show it, but where it came out the side is the same depth as the tread grooves. It did not penetrate any of the belts. I wouldn't do a long trip on it, or ride interstate, but I think it will be okay riding six miles at less than 55mph. Until I get a good tire gauge to track the pressure, I'm driving the truck to work. I should be able to get new tires with my next paycheck.

So where's a good place to get tires in Philly?
I know there was a great internet deal on Pirelli Angels, but I don't want to save $50 by buying online only to spend $100 to have them mounted.

Anywhere you buy tires here you will spend $$$ mounting them. I have gotten in the habit of taking both wheels off and dropping them off at the local shop, and $40 and an afternoon later they are mounted. if you take the wheels off the bike yourself it is cheaper than if you have them do it.

I've been using Mount Holley Powersport on rt38 in NJ. The last 2 times I had them change tires they did both wheels in under 30 minutes over my lunch break

Look on craigslist. A bunch of people buy mounting equipment and will usually do it for you for a lot less money or a case of beer.

You don't want to use the HF tire changer right out of the box. Let me find the website where a guy added non-scratching stuff to his.

Well crap. I think I found the link, but most of the pics are gone. The guy just bought some of the pastic type cutting boards and made pieces to fit on the tire changer anywhere it would touch the rim. You put pieces on the rim holders and a flat piece down on the bead breaker.

Have you ever gotten a flat while riding? I have, and it's not a lot of fun when you tip it into a corner and the rear tire tries to pass the front. I don't know about you, but I won't chance hitting the deck over a tire that won't hold air, especially if I know ahead of time that the tire is suspect. We can file that one under "stupid hurts".

Um no, I've been riding for almost 30 years but I've never had a flat tire.....:lol: I can tell when my tire is 5 lbs low, well before this flat induced accident you describe. In my experience, sport bike tires tend to go flat once parked, I have theories but that has been my experience. I don't care if he throws his money away... His tire never lost air in the first place so your argument is actually quite stupid.

Maybe you should throw a tire away every time it gets dirty, runs over a rock, etc as well... who knows? Why take the chance? I mean now you've really gone off the deep end in tire paranoia. The tire was never punctured. Have you never run a tire down to the threads? Did it suddenly explode as soon as you touched them with the road?

Seriously guys, I've had people on this board caution me against tire explosions if the pressure is 2 lbs higher than they "think" it should be. Now if the outer tread is at all damaged, you'll run the risk of a catastrophic failure!!! I am SO glad that tires aren't as fragile as some of you believe! Get on YouTube and watch a video on how tires are made. You may learn something and may even be able to put aside some of your fears... Besides, "Mr Awesome", he's not scrapping his pegs through the Gap on a super sport machine, he's riding his Ninja 650 back and forth to work. Yeesh!

Tigger. You're Mr. Awesome you sexy beast you. I always say that tires are over priced. Are they? I mean with them being mostly synthetic material and a lot less rubber than they used to be (saw it on a WWII history show so I'm now a tire expert by the way), you'd think they would be cheaper.

Supposed to be made by no-mar, but cheaper. Like the "economy" version of a no-mar.

Huh? Oh no, here's the set-up.

Tire Changer $49
Motorcycle kit $59
Balancer $59
Tire Iron $6
Rim Savers $15
Mojo Blocks $30

Yes, the bottom is a tire changer for regular tires and the top is an adapter so you can change mc tires. I'm sure that you could come up with something for the stand and bead breakers are sold separately but for $49, I'm not sure why you wouldn't just buy theirs...:idk:

Gas Man

I went and looked at it... but I'm seriously debating this towards the negative. $120 basically OTD. At $30 a tire to swap them out at the little shop with no balenceing which isn't an issue cause I use beads ($45 at HD with balence). That is 4 tire changes I need to break even. Not including I need to modify the unit to use it, and store teh 75# beast somewhere.

So 4 tire changes...
18months riding change rear $30
18months riding change front & rear $60
18months riding change rear $30
=$120 & almost 5 yrs to break even.

Could shorten it by charging buds to do it. (I usually only do 1 maybe 2 a year). Plus the "what if" I scratch up a rim or something stupid. IDK...

Amber Lamps
07-01-2010, 07:58 PM

Go to a store and look in the back 20 pages or so of Motorcyclist magazine. They were putting one in there for a while. Buying a $5 magazine to save $20+ is a fair trade. You should have also seen if they had any copies of their monthly sale circular in the store when you were there. They have also been putting one on the front page for a while.

Well its hf. Tt shud be nuff said on quality. It will do the trick but its not a "no mar". The metal rim clamps, metal bead brake are all obviously needed mods. But that has been stated already.

My biggest issue. Its rather large and heavy (~75#). and unlike my sportbike friends here. I have 11k on my rear tire now. I fully expect to do another k or 2 on it. Not bald yet, gettin close though.

So do the math for me. I just don't think its worth it. Even if I understand what ur all saying on finding the 20% off coupon. Plus as wifey said, look at a small price to keep up relations and biz with local shop. Going today to check with small local shop tt usually does my mounting. See what prices he has on a new rear with mounting. I will normally even pay slightly more to help the local guy.

Don't worry about it Marko... thanks anyway!!

I need a new rear tire. That has been stated and why I was looking into it. But I found a much BETTER alternative. Thank you God for HD.

I did some homework before hand... nearly every site online doesn't carry my replacement size in the HD Dunlop D407 series. I want to stick with OE because there is no benifit to switching. From what I have read the other alternatives offer no added milage or added grip (not that I've ever had a problem, my dunlops do great in rain clear up to 90mph). They are such a slight difference in price it's not worth it.

A small shop near my house can get my HD tire for $210 instead of dealer $241.

However... I checked with the dealer on the HD Wheel & Tire Warrenty program.
3yrs = $400
4yrs= $450
5yrs= $500

Covers all labor (read: wheels on bike), only replace with HD OE tires, no worries about out dated tires, and good at ANY HD dealer (HD program). It covers any nails, blow outs, pot holes, etc. Covers both rims and tires.

You have to have 3/32 of tread for replacement. So I guess I have bad luck with nails every 6,000-8,000 miles... At $300 (wheel off the bike) per rear wheel it won't take long to get my money back. That is for sure.

The only catch, with a used bike. You have to purchase 1 new HD tire (since mine is bald that works for me) to get warrenty.

So...
